BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) tumor is a rare tumor derived from accessory cells in the lymphoid follicles. FDC tumors are typically diagnosed on histology based on immunoreactivity to at least 1 of the FDC markers (CD21, CD23 or CD35) or based on the characteristic ultrastructural feature of long, interwoven, cytoplasmic, dendritic processes connected by desmosomes.
CASE: We observed novel cytologic features of FDC sarcoma in a liver fine needle aspirate of a 46-year-old man status post surgery and chemotherapy for FDC sarcoma, originating in the gastrointestinal tract with met

Sarcomas derived from immune accessory cells are uncommon malignancies, most of them occurring in lymph nodes while extra nodal sites are very rarely affected. Based on the immune profile, the cells that give origin to these neoplasms are currently divided in: follicular dendritic cell (FDC), interdigitating dendritic cell (IDC), indeterminate cell and Langerhans cell. A case of a dendritic cell sarcoma arising in the alveolar ridge mucosa in a 50-year-old female is reported here. The lesion presented as a nodular mass without defined borders and covered by reddish mucosa. Histologically, the

Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) tumours have been described recently as malignant tumours arising from accessory cells of the lymph nodes. They are rare tumours with fewer than 70 cases occurring worldwide. They usually present in cervical or abdominal lymph nodes, with very few occurring extranodally. We present the first case of an FDC tumour to occur in the hypopharynx with simultaneous cervical node metastases. The pathology is discussed and the literature reviewed.

gp96 plays a central role in innate as well as acquired immunity, maturation and chemotaxis of dendritic cells, Ab production, and cross-priming, and is a peptide acceptor in endoplasmic reticulum and an accessory to peptide loading of MHC class I molecules. The remarkable conservation of essential immunological properties of gp96 suggests their important roles during the evolution of the immune system. Considering their importance in immunity, immune evasion mechanisms of pathogens by modulating gp96 expression have been speculated. By differential display PCR, we observed that obligate intra

In the Reticulo-Endothelial System (RES), named at present Accessory Immune System (AIS), two chief groups of cells can be recognized: 1--Antigen-presenting cells: Dendritic cells 2--Antigen-processing cells: Macrophages (or Histiocytic cell) True malignant Langerhans cell neoplasm has not been yet clearly demonstrated. Finally, it is important to note that marcrophages and dentritic cells are commonly observed as relative cells in numerous malignant tumors (carcinomas, sarcomas, lymphomas, etc) However, their precise role has yet to be determined.

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare malignancy of accessory immune cells that can present in both nodal and extranodal sites. Previous cytologic case reports of FDCS have focused on fine needle aspiration (FNA) findings in nodal sites with low grade morphology and indolent clinical courses.
CASE: A 33-year-old female presented with a three-month history of abdominal distention, early satiety and nausea. Initial imaging studies showed a large abdominal mass, with subsequent studies showing lung, liver and lymph node metastases. Examination of primary and metastatic t

Dendritic cells are immune accessory cells which are widely distributed in many tissues. Those which are present within lymphoid follicle centers are classified as follicular dendritic cells. Those which are found outside germinal centers may be referred to as interdigitating reticulum cells, or Langerhans cells when they occur in the skin. Abnormal proliferations of dendritic cells are best known as the group of disorders comprising Langerhans-cell histiocytosis, which occurs primarily in children and teenagers. There are increasing reports of malignant proliferations of both types of dendrit

In this study a review of malignancies classified as histiocytic in the literature is given. The available data suggest that a distinction can be made between three main categories, i.e., follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcomas, Langerhans' cell/interdigiting reticulum cell (LC/IRC) sarcomas and histiocytic sarcomas (HS) which are unrelated to accessory cells. With the exception of FDC sarcomas these tumours are high-grade malignancies with an aggressive course and short survival times. The recognition of FDC sarcomas and LC/IRC sarcomas rests upon the identification of accessory cell related

This report concerns a multicentric skin tumor of dendritic cells. Skin-colored to reddish-brown papules and nodules erupted on the right arm of a 68-year-old man and, during the following years, spread to the upper extremities, shoulders, legs and face. Immunohistochemically the large, histiocyte-like tumor cells are Leu-6 (CD1), Leu-3a (CD4), HLA-DR/DQ and S-100 protein positive, but on thorough ultrastructural investigation were found to lack Birbeck granules. Thus, this disease represents a skin tumor of the interdigitating dendritic cell, an accessory cell which, in this case, was associa
