Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare disease which is more common in the childhood. Clinical presentation may vary ranging from single to multiple organ involvement. Skeleton is often involved and in the maxillofacial region, it affects the mandible more than the maxilla. Radiographically, it may present as a well-defined radiolucency or an ill-defined radiolucency. The presence of Langerhans cells in an inflammatory background with prominent eosinophils gives a clue to the diagnosis. Confirmation is by positive immunohistochemical staining with S100, CD1a and CD207. Here, we report a case

Rigid fixation is mostly used in thoracolumbar spine surgery, which restricts the thoracolumbar spine segments moving and is not conducive to postoperative rehabilitation. We developed an adaptive-motion pedicle screw and established a finite element model of the T12-L3 segments of the thoracolumbar spine in osteoporosis patients based on the CT image data. A variety of internal fixation finite element models were established for mechanical simulation analysis and comparison. The simulation results showed that compared with the conventional internal fixation system, the mobility of the new ada

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a proliferation of dendritic mononuclear cells with infiltration into organs locally or diffusely. Its aetiology is still unknown, and its clinical spectrum is quite wide.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-year-old-male child presented to us with a solitary swelling in left mandibular region which was painless and increasing in size with time. It was diagnosed to be unifocal LCH of mandible on the basis of X-ray, ultrasonography of the involved mandible and fine needle aspiration cytology of the swelling and managed conservatively with

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare highly heterogeneous histiocytosis, which can be divided into single system and multiple system disease according to site of involvement. There is a paucity of studies examining unifocal LCH in adults in the molecular era.
RESULTS: We retrospectively analysed records from 70 patients with unifocal LCH. The median age at diagnosis was 36 years (18-69). The most common organ involved was the bone (70.0%), followed by pituitary gland (7.1%). Target gene sequencing of lesion tissues was performed on 32 of the 70 patients. MAPK/PI3K pathway

Unifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) presents as a solitary focal bone lesion characterized by clonal proliferation of CD1a (+) and langerin(+) dendritic cells, derived from the bone marrow. In 38-69% of cases BRAF-V600E mutation is revealed. It gains attention to maxillofacial surgeons due to involvement of the orofacial region and early onset of jaws symptoms. If overlooked, massive deconstruction of tissues, occurs. We present a case of LCH of the temporomandibular joint in a 14 aged child where fine needle aspiration favorably contributed in an accurate diagnosis combined with the

Pseudotumour cerebri is a manifestation of intracranial hypertension in an otherwise normal individual. We hereby report phenytoin-induced pseudotumour cerebri in a 9-year-old boy who received phenytoin as a prophylactic anticonvulsant following surgical removal of unifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis involving the right frontal bone. The child was evaluated for headache and diplopia after starting phenytoin and on evaluation was found to have bilateral sixth nerve palsy. The only abnormality detected was an elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Withdrawal of phenytoin resulted in complete

In this report, the initial clinical experience of authors is described on the novel application of a navigational bipolar radiofrequency ablation electrode system for curative treatment of a painful unifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis involving the supra-acetabular iliac bone. The technical success and safety of the radiofrequency ablation procedure to achieve cure suggests that this intervention may be utilized in clinical practice as a viable and minimally invasive alternative option, for management of unifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder characterized by the proliferation of dendritic cells resulting in local or systemic symptoms. The clinical symptoms of patients with Langerhans cell histiocytosis depend on the site and the degree of involvement. This article describes two case histories of unifocal bony Langerhans cell histiocytosis with mandibular involvement and further discusses the appropriate management of such via a review of the literature.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a tumor-like condition characterized by idiopathic proliferation of Langerhans cells. The disease may involve the skeleton as well as other organs systems. Bone involvement may be solitary or multifocal. Unifocal osseous Langerhans cell histiocytosis may involve virtually any bone, with the calvarium being most frequently involved. Plain radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are the most used techniques for detection and characterization of the lesion. The use of ultrasound is less known, although it may be a valuable technique in dete

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is rarely encountered in ophthalmology practice. It is a spectrum of disorder characterized by accumulation of histiocytes in various tissues. Diagnosis is challenging as it may simulate periorbital hematoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and neuroblastoma. We report a case of unifocal LCH with orbital extension. Diagnosis was obtained from incisional biopsy, and histopathological examination showed numerous histiocytes with eosinophilic infiltrations. The presence of Langerhans cells was confirmed by the presence of protein S-100, CD1a, and/or Langerin (CD207). Treatme

Orbital Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) without bone involvement is rare. Isolated involvement of an extraocular muscle without bone change, to the best of the authors' knowledge, has not been previously reported. They describe a unique case of unifocal LCH of the superior oblique muscle with no bone involvement. A 16-year-old girl presented with a 2-week history of diplopia and headache. CT and MRI showed an enlarged right superior oblique muscle with no associated bone involvement. Biopsy with partial debulking revealed LCH and staging confirmed unifocal disease. The lesion underwent com

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic granuloma (EG) of bone refers to a generally benign form of Langerhans cell histiocytosis localized to the bone. Patients may present with a solitary lesion (monostotic) or multiple sites of involvement (polyostotic).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was done to evaluate the clinicopathological pattern of 6 cases of EGs of the skull diagnosed at a tertiary care hospital. All patients of EG were included with the help of medical records over a 5-year period that is, November 2009 to November 2014. They all had been preoperatively evaluated by skull X-ray and computed

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a variable disorder involving either single bone or multiorgan systems. The most effective treatment of unifocal osseous lesions is debated in the literature. This study describes the treatment approaches for LCH and demonstrates the effectiveness of biopsy in providing symptom resolution.
METHODS: Records of 61 patients diagnosed with LCH at a single institution over an 11-year period were reviewed. Thirty-nine patients with biopsy-confirmed diagnoses of unifocal osseous LCH were included in the analysis. At this institution, lesions are sur

PURPOSE: To report a rare presentation of unifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) simulating a limbal papilloma.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old man presented with a limbal mass in his left eye which had initially been suspected to be a papilloma based on clinical findings. The mass was excised and a histopathological diagnosis of "acute bullous inflammation with granulation tissue" was made. The lesion relapsed 10 months later which necessitated repeat resection along with corneoscleral patch grafting. Histopathological studies of the excised lesion led to a final diagnosis of LCH.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) comprises a group of disorders, the common feature of which is Langerhans cell proliferation. The clinical presentation is highly varied. The severity and prognosis of the disease are dependent on the type and extent of organ involvement. This paper reports a rare case of a four-month-old white male with unifocal LCH limited exclusively to the mandible, discussing the diagnosis, radiographic and immunohistochemical aspects, treatment and monitoring multidisciplinary of the case.

The sonographic (US) findings of unifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis of the occiput are described. The patient was a 3 year-old girl who presented with a painful soft tissue mass on the scalp. US demonstrated a large soft tissue mass with destruction of the underlying bone. The mass extended through the bony defect and consisted of a solid intracranial component and a predominantly cystic extracranial component. US is not usually associated with the diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis but in this case it provided valuable information that led to the primary differential diagnosis of

A 24-year-old man was admitted for a painful gingival ulcer. Histology and immunohistochemistry of a lesional biopsy revealed the diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). To rule out multifocal disease, a complete staging was performed. There was no evidence of bony lesions or any other organ involvement. The diagnosis of LCH restricted to the oral mucosa was established. The complete oral lesion was ablated by CO(2) laser and subsequently treated topically with triamcinolone acetonide. The patient is still in remission after one year of follow-up. LCH confined to the oral mucosa is r

PURPOSE: The present study presents 22 cases of pediatric patients harboring an eosinophilic granuloma (EG) of the skull.
METHODS: Twenty-two patients (13 males, 9 females; mean age, 7.5 years; range, 3-14 years) with a suspected diagnosis of a cranial EG were enrolled in the study. They all had been preoperatively evaluated by skull x-ray and computed tomography, whereas 10 patients additionally underwent magnetic resonance imaging. To rule out a multifocal disease, scintigraphy was performed in all cases preoperatively. Surgical excision of the lesions was performed, and EG was proven histo

A 13-year-old Ethiopian female patient who initially presented with localized pain and minimal soft tissue swelling later developed pathological fracture of the left femnur. The patient was initially treated as a case of osteomyelitis until the diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (histiocytosis X, eosiniphilic granuloma) was made by bone biopsy. The clinical presentation of the case and brief review of the literature is discussed.
