To recognize patients with inhibitory and neutralizing auto-antibodies to interferon-γ (AutoAbs-IFN-γ) presenting with the sporadic phenotype of Mendelian Susceptibility to Mycobacterial Disease (MSMD) mainly characterized by recurrent intracellular mycobacterium or/and salmonella infections, we comprehensively investigated IL12/23-IFN-γ signaling, candidate genetic sequencings or/and protein expressions of IL12RB1, IFNRG1, IL12p40, IFNRG2, STAT1, IKKA, NEMO, CYBB and IRF8 in four patients. Their serum was further titrated to detect AutoAbs-IFN-γ, for which the biological activity was assessed

Cardiac surgery is commonly associated with gastrointestinal complications. The incidence of severe abdominal pathology ranges from 0.5% to 3% and is associated with a 30% risk of mortality. Frequently occurring complications include splanchnic infarction, perforated bowel, pancreatitis, upper intestinal bleeding and diverticulitis. Systemic and localised infections are also common after open heart surgery. Plasma proteins, neutrophils, monocytes, endothelial cells and lymphocytes are all altered by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Cell mediated immunity is depressed following exposure to the ext

Salmonella meningitis is an unusual complication of Salmonella sepsis that occurs almost exclusively in infants and young children. Cases that do occur in adults are associated with a high morbidity and mortality. The present study concerns a rare case of Salmonella meningitis, the first to be reported in Qatar, in a previously healthy young adult man who was admitted with fever, headache and nuchal rigidity. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture produced Salmonella paratyphi A, although cultures of blood were negative. The patient was admitted to the medical intensive care unit (MICU) and assiste

The mortality and morbidity of salmonella infections is seriously underestimated. Salmonella myocarditis is an unusual complication of salmonella sepsis in adults. Cases that do occur may be associated with high morbidity and mortality. We present a rare case of salmonella myocarditis with multi-organ failure in a previously healthy young adult man who was brought to the emergency room with fever, diarrhea, shortness of breath, and altered sensorium, discovered to have acute pulmonary edema and respiratory compromise for which he was assisted with mechanical ventilation for 8 days. Blood cultu

The leukocyte integrins have critical roles in host defense and inflammatory tissue injury. We found that integrin alphaDbeta2, a novel but largely uncharacterized member of this family, is restricted to subsets of macrophages and a small population of circulating leukocytes in wild-type mice in the absence of inflammatory challenge and is expressed in regulated fashion during cytokine-induced macrophage differentiation in vitro. alphaDbeta2 is highly displayed on splenic red pulp macrophages and mediates their adhesion to local targets, identifying key functional activity. In response to chal

The authors present a case of Salmonella sepsis and meningitis with a recurrence of the meningitis in a 36-year-old Hispanic, male AIDS patient. They discuss the mechanisms and routes in general and speculate on these items in this patient from the information available. Meningitis diagnosis and treatment in general and specifically in Salmonella cases are reviewed as well as the variations in AIDS patients. The probable reasons for the recurrence and etiology are discussed.

BACKGROUND: IL-12/23-interferon-gamma circuit enhances reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis in macrophage to attack intracellular pathogens such as mycobacteria and salmonella. Defective ROS in patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) have increased susceptibility to these pathogens. However, patients with defective IL-12/23-interferon-gamma circuit rather than CGD are not recognized in Taiwan, endemic for tuberculosis and salmonella.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to identify Taiwanese patients with defective IL-12/23-IFN-gamma circuit.

An 11-month female with a poor socio-economic status presented to a tertiary care paediatric hospital with complaints of fever of 4-5 days and diarrhoea of 20 days duration. The patient didn't respond to the prescribed antimicrobials namely--Norfloxacin and metronidazole. On admission she was diagnosed as persistent diarrhea with PEM grade III with sepsis. Stool examination and culture were negative for any pathogens, however blood culture yielded growth of Salmonella Virchow which was susceptible to most common antimicrobial agents excepting Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole. Salmonella meningitis is an unusual complication of Salmonella sepsis and occurs mainly in children. A rare case of Salmonella typhimurium meningitis occurring in an adult HIV positive man who presented with a history of fever and diarrhoea is reported. On examination he was dehydrated, and had oral thrush, weakness of lower limbs and neck stiffness. A septic diagnostic screen was performed and he was commenced on empiric intravenous cefotaxime therapy for meningitis. S typhimurium was cultured from cerebrospinal fluid and blood culture specimens. It was non-lactose fermenting, oxidase negativ

OBJECTIVE: Between October and November 2003, several infants with encephalopathy were hospitalized in pediatric intensive care units in Israel. Two died of cardiomyopathy. Analysis of the accumulated data showed that all had been fed the same brand of soy-based formula (Remedia Super Soya 1), specifically manufactured for the Israeli market. The source was identified on November 6, 2003, when a 5.5-month-old infant was admitted to Sourasky Medical Center with upbeat nystagmus, ophthalmoplegia, and vomiting. Wernicke's encephalopathy was suspected, and treatment with supplementary thiamine was

Although the roles played by systemic tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta), and their upregulation of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) and E-selectin, in the pathogenesis of human cerebral malaria (CM) are well established, the role of local cytokine release, in the brain, remains unclear. Immunohistochemistry was therefore used to compare the expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, E-selectin, IL-1beta, TNF and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) at light-microscope level, in cryostat sections of cerebral, cerebellar

We report the long-term follow-up of 12 pediatric-aged patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). The mean age at the onset of infections was 5 months with a median delay in diagnosis of 2.5 years. Bacille Calmette-Guérin lymphadenitis was the most common presenting infection (6) followed by suppurative lymphadenitis (4), liver abscess (1), or Salmonella sepsis (1). Prophylaxis with cotrimoxazole was recommended to all patients. During the mean follow-up of 10 years (range, 4-23 years) pneumonitis was the most prevalent infection (91%) followed by lymphadenitis (83%), aphtous stomatiti

Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the etiological agent of adult T cell leukemia and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. HTLV-1 infection in patients with B cell-type chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is rare and has been reported only in areas in which HTLV-1 is endemic. In the present study, we detected HTLV-1 proviral DNA by polymerase chain reaction, using tax primers, in peripheral blood lymphocytes from a B-CLL patient, an immigrant to Israel, where HTLV-1 infection is not endemic. F344 rats injected intravenously with peripheral blood lymphocytes ob

We present a case of a miscarriage at 16 weeks of gestation due to infection and transplacental passage of Salmonella group C. This was identified as being Salmonella Virchow from genital tract swab culture, and placental Gram-staining revealed numerous colonies of Gram-negative bacilli within the fibrin between the placental villi, confirming a true villitis associated with a hematogenous infection. Based on the patient's history, it was suggested that she had contracted the salmonella infection from eating undercooked eggs. Treatment of salmonella infection in pregnancy is controversial, and

BACKGROUND: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are susceptible to a variety of bacterial infections, including infections caused by Salmonella species. We sought to identify the most common infections caused by Salmonella spp. in SCD patients at our hospital, and to determine their mortality rates and susceptibility to commonly used antimicrobial agents.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all Salmonella infections in SCD patients admitted to Qatif Central Hospital during the last 11 years.
RESULTS: During the 11 years of the study, 331 episodes of Salmonella in
