Global incidence of lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancers by subsite in 2022.

Cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx (LOCP) represent a substantial public health challenge worldwide. Using GLOBOCAN national estimates of incidence, detailed cancer registry data from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, and population statistics from the United Nations, the authors report the distribution of new cases of LOCP cancers in 185 countries by sex in 2022. Age-standardized incidence rates were calculated. For countries lacking registry data, regional averages from high-quality registries were used to impute subsite-specific estimates. Worldwide, 758,000 people were diagnos

The Impact of Comorbidity on Severe Procedure-Coded Inpatient Events in Head and Neck Cancer and Thyroid Cancer Hospitalizations in Germany: A Nationwide DRG Analysis, 2005-2021.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity is an important determinant of treatment selection and in-hospital complications in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and thyroid cancer (TC), yet population-based evidence on this relationship remains limited. METHODS: We analyzed nationwide Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) data from 1,552,028 inpatient HNC and TC treatments of patients aged ≥30 years in Germany between 2005 and 2021. The aim was to characterize the association of comorbidity and severe treatment-related procedure-coded inpatient events (IEs) with gender, age, tumor subsite, and treatment type.

Long-Term Clinical Consequences of Severe Oral Mucositis in Survivors of Lip, Oral Cavity, and Pharynx Cancer Versus Leukemia: A Propensity-Score-Matched Comparative Cohort Study Using Real-World Data.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Severe oral mucositis is widely viewed as a transient toxicity of antineoplastic therapy. Whether its long-term consequences differ between cancers that directly damage the upper aerodigestive tract (cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx [CLOP]) and systemic hematologic malignancies is unknown. The aim of this study was to compare lifetime risks of mortality, dysphagia, malnutrition, respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease in propensity-score-matched survivors of CLOP cancer versus leukemia with and without a history of ulcerative oral mucositis. METHODS: Pop

Disparities and burden of illness among hospitalized cancer patients with opioid dependence.

Opoid dependency (OD) is associated with adverse clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients; nevertheless, the understanding of OD and its impact on cancer patients remains restricted. Alongside addressing the symptoms related to disease, hospitalized patients with OD also grapple with mental illness (MI) challenges and the risk of infectious consequences (ICs), which remain unrecognized in cancer patients. We utilized national inpatient database to examine patient and clinical characteristics among renal cell carcinomas (RCC), prostate cancers (PC) and cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pha

Hospital Use, Morbidity, and Cancer Risk by Age Group in Neurofibromatosis Type 1: A Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) affects multiple organs progressively, leading to a shortened life expectancy. This study aimed to identify the complications that are prominent in each age group by comparing 28,082 patients with NF1 and 84,246 matched controls. Benign and malignant neoplasms along with neurological complications were the primary contributors to hospital use across most age groups. Respiratory and circulatory disorders were a common cause of hospital use in children and older adults, respectively. Except for soft tissue and central nervous system-originated malignancies, which a

Wildfire-related PM2.5 and cause-specific cancer mortality.

Wildfires have devastating effects on society and public health. However, little evidence from population-based cohort has been performed to analyze the relationship of wildfire-related PM2.5, an important component of wildfire smoke, with cancer-specific mortality. We aimed to explore this relationship and identify vulnerable populations in UK with lower levels of wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure. The study consisted of 492394 participants (age: 38-73 years) recruited by UK Biobank during 2004-2010. The cumulative wildfire-related PM2.5 within 10 kilometers of residence over three years was us

Discharge Against Medical Advice in Cancer Patients: Insights from a Multicenter Study in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Discharge against medical advice (DAMA) disrupts continuity of care and is associated with increased readmission rates, morbidity, and mortality. While extensively studied in general hospital populations, its prevalence and associated factors in cancer patients, where treatment adherence is critical for outcomes, remain underexplored. METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study analyzed anonymized data from the IQVIA hospital database, including cancer patients hospitalized in 36 German hospitals between January 2019 and December 2023.
