A new species of Gastronodus Singh, 1934 (Nematoda: Spirocercidae) from Micaelamys namaquensis (A. Smith, 1834) (Rodentia: Muridae) in the Nama-Karoo, South Africa.

Despite several recent studies, the helminth diversity of small mammals in South Africa remains poorly understood. During a survey conducted from 2023 to 2025 on the helminth assemblages of rodents in the Western Cape Province, South Africa, nematodes were collected from the stomach of a female Micaelamys namaquensis in the Nama-Karoo biome. For one of the nematode species identified, morphological characters, based on light and electron microscopy, corresponded to the genus Gastronodus: a short, heavily sclerotized buccal capsule armed with 6 teeth, the presence of 3 pairs of pedunculate post

Lymphocyte Micronucleus Formation Is Driven by Inflammation-Induced Oxidative DNA Damage in Oesophageal Cancer Development.

We investigated mechanisms underlying circulating DNA damage across the gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Barrett's oesophagus (BO) and oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) spectrum using the lymphocyte micronucleus (MN) assay. MN frequency (MN%) was quantified in lymphocytes from healthy volunteers (HVs), GORD, BO and OAC patients, alongside plasma biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress. Ex vivo challenge assays assessed lymphocyte responses to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), vinblastine and the bile acid deoxycholic acid (DCA). Tissue-based NF-κB expression was also correlated with MN

Estimating total and diagnosed global cancer incidence and stage distribution from 1990 to 2050: a simulation-based analysis of 17 cancers.

BACKGROUND: Cancer incidence is increasing globally, with the largest burden in low-income and middle-income countries. Workforce shortages and health system barriers contribute to substantial diagnostic delays and underdiagnosis, but estimates of undiagnosed cancer burden are lacking. The aim of this study was to estimate incidence (total and diagnosed) and stage at diagnosis in each country for 17 cancers from 1990 to 2050. METHODS: We developed the Global Cancer Workforce microsimulation model to simulate 17 cancer types (oral, nasopharynx, oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, anus, liver,

Estimating global cancer survival and mortality from 1990 to 2050: a simulation-based analysis of 17 cancers.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survival has improved in many countries in recent decades, but large disparities remain globally. Understanding the effects of workforce shortages, stage at diagnosis, and broader health system barriers on poor survival is important for the design and evaluation of policy interventions to improve cancer survival in diverse settings. We aimed to develop a model to estimate trends in cancer survival (overall and by stage), accounting for these factors. METHODS: We developed the Global Cancer Workforce microsimulation model to simulate 17 cancer types (oral, nasopharynx, oesop

Estimating the impact of scaling up workforce personnel on global cancer mortality from 2030 to 2050: a simulation-based analysis of 17 cancers and 18 personnel types.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of cancer continues to rise, disproportionately affecting low-income and middle-income countries, where cancer workforce shortages are especially acute and contribute to poor outcomes. In this analysis, we estimate the effect on cancer mortality of scaling up specific workforce personnel types in order to provide global, regional, and country-specific guidance to inform cancer workforce policy. METHODS: Using the Global Cancer Workforce microsimulation model, which accounts for demographic, epidemiological, and health system factors related to cancer incidence an

Advancement in pre- and peri-procedural imaging.

Only recently, pathophysiology and relevance of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) has been acknowledged but remains still poorly understood. The rising interest in this valve disease has also fuelled the efforts to define and improve imaging modalities. Vice versa, understanding tricuspid disease initiation and progress, validation, and quantification as well as choice and monitoring of treatment critically rely on reproducible and sensitive imaging capabilities. The latter is dominated by ever improving ultrasound-based analysis applied from the outside, the oesophagus or within the heart. The inc

Lymph Node Dissection of the Upper Mediastinum in Distal Oesophageal and Oesophagogastric Junction Cancer: Indicated in All Patients? Review.

OBJECTIVES: The role of upper mediastinal lymph node dissection (UMLND) in distal oesophageal and oesophagogastric junction (AEG) cancers remains debated, requiring a balance between potential oncologic benefit and surgical risk. This review provides an updated perspective on its role. METHODS: We analysed current evidence from retrospective studies, meta-analyses, and ongoing clinical trials, focusing on histology, tumour location, staging, neoadjuvant therapy response, and surgical outcomes. RESULTS: Routine UMLND is not supported for all distal oesophageal and AEG cancers. A standard 2-fi

Performance of a Vendor System for Systematic Offline Adaptive Breast Helical Radiotherapy.

Background: This study evaluated the performance of a commercial offline adaptive radiotherapy system for systematic monitoring of breast cancer treatment with nodal irradiation using helical tomotherapy. Methods: Thirty patients treated for invasive unilateral breast carcinoma were analysed. For each patient, three megavoltage CT scans acquired at the first, middle, and last treatment sessions were processed through the PreciseART (Accuray, US) offline ART workflow. Automatically deformed structures were compared with manually delineated reference structures. Geometric accuracy was assessed u

Video-assisted thoracic surgery of a caudal mediastinal paraoesophageal abscess in a cat with recurrent pyothorax.

CASE SUMMARY: A 6-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented with acute respiratory distress and lethargy. Three months prior, the cat had been medically managed for a bacterial pyothorax. Initial stabilisation included oxygen supplementation, and a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) revealed bilateral pleural effusion. A thoracostomy tube was placed and pleural fluid was aseptically collected. Cytological evaluation of the pleural fluid was consistent with a septic neutrophilic exudate, with Fusobacterium russii, Bacteriodes pyogenes and Porphyromonas gingivalis isolated on ana

From compression to cure: aberrant right subclavian artery reimplantation for dysphagia lusoria.

Dysphagia lusoria is a rare cause of oesophageal compression due to an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) coursing posterior to the oesophagus. Symptomatic patients may require surgical correction. We describe the surgical technique of resecting and reimplanting the ARSA as a cure for dysphagia lusoria. The patient presented with choking attacks and dysphagia. Echocardiography revealed ARSA. Barium swallow and computed tomography angiography then confirmed ARSA-related oesophageal compression. Surgical treatment involved division of the aberrant vessel at its aortic origin followed by rei

Differentiating borderline HER2-expressing and HER2-positive cancers from other subtypes using serum urokinase plasminogen activator.

BACKGROUND: HER2-positive (HER2+) cancers are associated with aggressive tumour development but also high response rates to targeted blockade treatments of the HER-2/neu signalling pathway leading to improved clinical outcome for the patient. Current clinical analysis of the HER2 status primarily relies on solid tumour biopsies low-suitable for continuous real-time monitoring needed for possible adjustment of the treatment, while serum tests targeting blood-circulating HER-2/neu fragments often show conflicting tumour-serum relations. METHODS: A cellulase-linked aptamer sandwich assay was use

Description of Skrjabinoclava pharyngophila n. sp. (Nematoda: Acuariidae) from the oropharynx of the sacred kingfisher Todiramphus sanctus (Vigors & Horsfield) in New Zealand.

The sacred kingfisher Todiramphus sanctus is a widespread bird species that is non-migratory in New Zealand, in contrast to elsewhere in the world. We describe a new species of Skrjabinoclava, a genus of acuariid nematodes, recovered from the oropharynx of sacred kingfishers in New Zealand. This is the first record of Skrjabinoclava in Australasia and the first publicly available DNA sequence for the genus. Skrjabinoclava pharyngophila n. sp. is unique in its infection site, occupying the oropharyngeal mucosa, which is atypical for Skrjabinoclava species, which usually infect the proventriculu

Cerebral air embolism from oesophageal-pulmonary vein fistula induced by fish bone ingestion.

Fish bone ingestion is common, but cerebral air embolism as a secondary complication is exceedingly rare. A man in his 80s presented to our tertiary emergency centre after sudden collapse following oesophageal discomfort from fish bone ingestion the previous day. Head CT revealed punctate hypodense foci in the right frontal white matter, consistent with cerebral air, while CT perfusion showed decreased cerebral blood flow with delayed transit time. Chest CT demonstrated an impacted fish bone in the distal oesophagus and air bubbles in the pulmonary vein. Urgent endoscopy confirmed the fish bon

High-flow nasal oxygen versus nasopharyngeal oxygen insufflation during upper aerodigestive tract endoscopy: protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled non-inferiority trial (OPTIGO).

INTRODUCTION: Upper aerodigestive tract endoscopy is routinely performed for the diagnosis and staging of head and neck cancers. These procedures are commonly conducted under general anaesthesia with spontaneous ventilation to optimise surgical exposure and avoid tracheal intubation. However, maintaining adequate oxygenation remains challenging, particularly in patients with altered airway anatomy due to prior surgery or radiotherapy.Standard practice often involves a preliminary laryngoscopy to insert a nasopharyngeal oxygen catheter, which may increase procedural complexity and interfere wit

Translation and Validation of the Khasi version of European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C-30) and Oesophageal Cancer module (EORTC QLQ-OES-18).

OBJECTIVES: Oesophageal cancer (OC) is characterised by poor prognosis, a significant reduction in Quality of Life (QoL) and requirement for morbid therapy. The highest age-adjusted rate of OC incidence in India was seen in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, being 10 times the national average. This study aimed to develop and validate Khasi translations of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C-30) Version 3.0 and EORTC QLQ-OES-18 questionnaires for use in the Khasi-speaking population of Meghalaya.
