Tracking cancer hospitalizations: seventeen-year sex-specific trends in nationally representative hospitalization data on malignant neoplasms in Thailand (2007-2023).

BackgroundMalignant neoplasms remain a major public health concern in Thailand, as in several countries. There is limited research that has explored long-term sex-specific trends utilizing national hospital-based data. MethodsThis retrospective descriptive study examines 17 years of inpatient data obtained from publicly available sources from the Ministry of Public Health website, focusing on nine malignancy groups and 31 malignant neoplasm subtypes, classified by ICD-10 codes. The study aims to provide important insights into sex-specific patterns by presenting prevalence rates, illustrating

Multiethnic Trends in Early Onset Colorectal Cancer.

Current characteristics of early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in the United States have been mainly studied in Whites, African Americans, and Hispanics, but little is known in regard to EOCRC in Asians and Native Hawaiians in the US. EOCRC was examined in Hawaii's multiethnic population. Data from the Hawaii Tumor Registry was used to analyze colorectal cancer (CRC) cases diagnosed in Hawaii from 2000-2019 by subsite, age, gender, ethnicity, and stage. Ethnicity analyses were limited to 3524 CRC cases, diagnosed between 2015-2019. Average annual 5-year age-adjusted incidence and mortality r

Robotic high anterior resection for rectal cancer with hand-sewn Gambee anastomosis after metal stent placement in a colorectal malignant stricture: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Robot-assisted surgery is increasingly deployed in colorectal surgery, and decompression surgery using a stent is considered a standard treatment for malignant stenosis of the large intestine. Surgery after stent placement is also frequently performed. However, the anastomosis method remains controversial. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 75-year-old woman visited our hospital's internal medicine department with chief complaints of bloody stool and constipation for the past year and colonoscopy was scheduled. After taking laxatives to prepare for treatment, abdominal pain was noticed and

Immune landscape in APC and TP53 related tumor microenvironment in colon adenocarcinoma: A bioinformatic analysis.

INTRODUCTION: APC and TP53 are the two most regularly mutated genes in colon adenocarcinoma (COAD), especially in progressive malignancies and antitumoral immune response. The current bioinformatics analysis investigates the APC and TP53 gene expression profile in colon adenocarcinoma as a prognostic characteristic for survival, particularly concentrating on the correlated immune microenvironment. METHODS: Clinical and genetic data of colon cancer and normal tissue samples were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-COAD and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) online databases, respective

Clinicopathologic and Endosonographic Characteristics of Colon Subepithelial Tumors Discovered Incidentally.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Colonoscopy is commonly used for colorectal cancer screening; therefore, the detection of colon subepithelial tumors (SETs) has also increased. Several research studies have been undertaken to diagnose and treat stomach and rectal SETs. The purpose of this study was to determine a diagnostic point for colon SETs by comparing histological findings with the endoscopic characteristics of colon SETs discovered by chance. METHODS: A total 194 patients underwent an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for suspicious colon SETs during a colonoscopy from May 2014 to December 2021. A total of

An unusual case of diastatic perforation of the transverse colon: Case report and literature review.

Diastatic perforation corresponds to a bursting of the cecal wall caused by excessive distension resulting from a remote obstruction of the low large bowel. This perforation could be explained by Laplace's physical law, and by the particular vascular anatomy of the cecal wall. We report the case of a 75-year-old man admitted for peritonitis with an abdominal CT scan highly suggestive of a diastatic perforation of the cecum complicating colonic distension upstream of a stenosing tumor of the rectosigmoid junction. To our surprise, surgical exploration revealed the defect to be in the transverse

Crossed renal ectopia with rectal cancer: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Crossed renal ectopia (CRE) occurs when one kidney crosses the midline from the primary side to the contralateral side while the ureter remains on the primary side. Rectal cancer, one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive tract, refers to cancer from the dentate line to the rectosigmoid junction. The concurrent presentation of CRE alongside rectal cancer is an uncommon clinical observation. CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we report a 69-year-old male patient with rectal cancer who was diagnosed with CRE via computed tomography during hospitalization. Following thorough preope

The role of rectal magnetic resonance imaging in accurate localization and designation of colorectal cancer for optimal management: Case study.

Colorectal cancer, developing from malignant transformation of the distal gut epithelium, is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. We present a gentleman in his 60s who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer during a routine screening colonoscopy with no evidence of distant metastasis on subsequent staging with positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET-CT). The outside rectal MR (magnetic resonance) imaging report localized a mass to the upper rectum. Review of the MRI at an institutional, Multidisciplinary Tumor Board designated the tumor as "rectosigmoi

[A case of COVID-19 associated ischemic colitis].

Ischemic colitis is a disease in which local tissue in the intestinal wall dies to varying degrees due to insufficient blood supply to the colon. Risk factors include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc. Typical clinical manifestations of the disease are abdominal pain and hematochezia. The most common locations are the watershed areas of splenic flexure and rectosigmoid junction. The lesions are segmental and clearly demarcated from normal mucosa under endoscopy. The digestive tract is a common extra-pulmonary organ affected by

DNA signature and occult blood in stool led to diagnosis of an early-onset metastatic rectal cancer in a young pregnant woman: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common form of cancer worldwide in terms of incidence and the second in terms of mortality with 1.9 million new cases and 930,000 deaths reported in 2020. Corresponding numbers in the U.S. are 150,000 and 53,000, respectively. Although the majority of CRCs in the U.S. and other high-income countries are in adults aged 50 and older, there has recently been a considerable rise in early-onset CRC, so that 17,930 cases in the U.S. (12% of total cases) are diagnosed in individuals younger than age 50, representing the equivalent of 49 new cases
