Prognostic impact of primary tumour location after curative resection in Stage I-III colorectal cancer: a single-centre retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship of tumour site with post-recurrence course and outcome after primary surgery in resectable colorectal cancer is unclear. This study investigated the prognostic impact of primary tumour location following radical resection without preoperative treatment in Stage I-III colorectal cancer. METHODS: We analyzed 3770 patients with Stage I-III colorectal cancer who underwent curative resection at our hospital during 2000-15. We defined the right-sided colon as the cecum, ascending colon and transverse colon, and the left-sided colon as the descending colon, sigmoid and re

Protein-truncating and rare missense variants in ATM and CHEK2 and associations with cancer in UK Biobank whole-exome sequence data.

BACKGROUND: Deleterious germline variants in ATM and CHEK2 have been associated with a moderately increased risk of breast cancer. Risks for other cancers remain unclear. METHODS: Cancer associations for coding variants in ATM and CHEK2 were evaluated using whole-exome sequence data from UK Biobank linked to cancer registration data (348 488 participants), and analysed both as a retrospective case-control and a prospective cohort study. Odds ratios, hazard ratios, and combined relative risks (RRs) were estimated by cancer type and gene. Separate analyses were performed for protein-truncating

Is It Necessary to Endoscopically Evaluate the Anastomosis in Robotic or Laparoscopic Surgical Procedures for Colorectal Cancer?

Background: In the surgical treatment of colorectal cancers, disease-free survival and life expectancy are inversely proportional to the increase in complications. We evaluated the superiority of colonoscopy and air and water tests in detecting anastomotic leaks in sigmoid and rectosigmoid junction colon cancers. Methods: Data of patients who underwent robotic/laparoscopic surgical procedures for sigmoid and rectosigmoid junctional colon cancers at a single center between January 2018 and February 24 were retrospectively evaluated. The anastomoses were evaluated by intraoperative colonoscopy (

A Rare Case of Solitary Fibrous Tumor Originating in the Peritoneum: Clinical and Histopathological Insights.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that most commonly arise from the pleura, with peritoneal origin being exceptionally uncommon. We report a case of a 51-year-old male who presented with a large abdominal mass, subsequently diagnosed as a solitary fibrous tumor originating from the peritoneum. Radiological evaluation revealed a well-defined mass with a vascular pedicle supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery, extending from the pelvis to the lower abdomen. Surgical resection of the tumor, including part of the rectosigmoid junction was performed and histopatholog

The critical role of tumor size in predicting lymph node metastasis in early-stage colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Main purpose of this study is to investigate impact of tumor size on risk of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in pT1-stage colorectal cancer (CRC), focusing on colon, rectosigmoid junction, and rectum. METHOD: Patients diagnosed with primary pT1 CRC between 2015 and 2019 were selected from National Cancer Database, utilizing International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, Third Edition (ICD-O-3) codes. We analyzed factors influencing LNM using uni- and multivariate analysis, then isolated tumor size to study its impact on LNM. RESULTS: In this study of 27,649 pT1-stage tumor pa

Successful Expulsion of a Golf Ball from the Sigmoid Colon Using Volume Laxatives.

BACKGROUND: Rectal foreign bodies form a surprisingly frequent cause of presentation to the emergency department. The materials inserted constitute a wide range of size, shape, and texture with each presenting a unique set of challenges. Despite a seemingly innocuous presentation, if not recognised early and managed accordingly, significant complications can develop including obstruction, perforation, and sphincteric injury. The existing doctrines advocate endoscopic intervention after simple measures fail and advise against the use of laxative therapy due to concerns for complications that ma

Unusual Synchronous Colonic Metastasis of Ovarian Cancer.

Colorectal metastasis is rare and can be confused with primary colorectal cancer. We report the case of a 63-year-old patient who presented with synchronous metastasis of the rectosigmoid junction and ovarian cancer. Initially thought to be a Krukenberg tumor, the diagnosis of metastasis from ovarian origin was confirmed through an immunohistochemical study of the colonic biopsy.

Comprehension of rectosigmoid junction cancer molecular features by comparison to the rectum or sigmoid colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous cancer. Its treatment depends on its anatomical site and molecular features. Carcinomas of the rectosigmoid junction are frequent; however, specific data on these tumors are sparse, as they are frequently assigned to either the colon or rectum. This study sought to identify the molecular features of rectosigmoid junction cancer to determine whether there should be any difference between the therapeutic management of rectosigmoid junction cancer and that of sigmoid colon or rectum cancer. METHODS: The data of 96 CRC patients with carcinoma

Diagnosis and management of small bowel obstruction in the ileum caused by endometriosis: A case report.

Small bowel obstruction is a rare complication of endometriosis, a condition defined by the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterine cavity. The rectosigmoid junction is the most common site for intestinal endometriosis. However, small bowel involvement, particularly of the ileum, is less common, and is a much rarer location for endometriosis causing bowel obstruction. A 37-year-old woman with a medical history of endometriosis requiring multiple abdominal surgeries presented with signs and symptoms of small bowel obstruction. Computerized tomography indicated a transition point a

A modified perineal approach for the management of strangulated rectal prolapse: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Conditions associated with increased intraabdominal pressure may lead to rectal prolapse. Like any pathological herniation, rectal prolapse can strangulate if incarcerated. When a patient presents with signs and symptoms of strangulation, emergent surgical intervention is warranted. This report strives to strengthen existing evidence for the use of an Altemeier-type perineal approach as a viable choice for the management of strangulated rectal prolapse in healthy individuals. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A healthy 70-year-old female presents with worsening rectal pain and an irreducibl

Small Bowel Lymphoma Complicated With Ischemic Colitis: A Case Report.

Ischemic colitis is thought to be an injury to the colon as a result of reduced blood flow. Certain infectious diseases such as the Epstein-Barr virus can aid in the reduction of blood flow. The insult can range from inflammation and superficial injury to full-thickness necrosis. The typical regions affected are the "watershed" areas of the colon: the splenic flexure, the rectosigmoid junction, and the right colon. Because patients can present with a wide spectrum of symptoms from vague abdominal discomfort to complete abdominal catastrophe, the diagnosis of ischemic colitis is sometimes chall

Response to Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy as a Predictor of Long-Term Survival in Patients with Locally Advanced Rectosigmoid Junction Cancer: An Analysis Based On SEER Database.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy is recommended to locally advanced rectal cancer, especially for the lower and middle ones. However, the role of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in rectosigmoid junction cancer remains undetermined. We investigated whether patients with a good response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy will have a relatively better long-term survival compared with those with no response. METHODS: Overall, 1325 patients diagnosed with locally advanced rectosigmoid junction cancer from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End-Results (SEER) cancer registry database (2004-2014,

Primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the cecum.

When found in the cecum or rectosigmoid junction, primary colorectal B-cell lymphoma is a rare malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma often associated with an unfavorable prognosis. Due to the nonspecific clinical symptoms, these uncommon tumors are often left undefined or misdiagnosed, resulting in delays in treatment and adverse patient outcomes. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography is the most commonly used medical imaging process for primary colorectal lymphoma, but due to the rarity of this disorder, accurate imaging diagnosis remains a clinical challenge. In this article, we report the case o

Pediatric Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of Rectosigmoid Junction: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

The occurrence of rectosigmoid junction inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is uncommon in children. This is a rare form of mesenchymal tumor, belonging to the category of soft tissue tumors, and can be found at any anatomical site from the central nervous system to the gastrointestinal tract. Our patient was a 10-year-old male subject complaining of lack of defecation and constipation. The patient had decreased the frequency of defecation and constipation about two weeks before his referral and had not improved despite the use of laxatives. The abdomen was completely distended and there

Robotic multiple sigmoid and rectal mucosa skinning in a multicentric deep infiltrating bowel endometriotic nodules: a case report.

Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. The eradication of non-gynecological localizations represents the real surgical challenge. A 29-year-old woman underwent robotic surgery with the Da Vinci system (Intuitive Surgical Inc.) for a diagnosis of stage IV deep endometriosis. The patient presented with 5 cm left ovarian endometrioma, an infiltration of the left posterior parametrium, and bilateral ureteral endometriosis. Once inside the pelvic cavity, deep intestinal infiltrating endometriosis implants were confirme

Postoperative Venous Thromboembolism in Colon and Rectal Cancer: Do Tumor Location and Operation Matter?

BACKGROUND: Existing venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk scores help identify patients at increased risk of postoperative VTE who warrant extended prophylaxis in the first 30 days. However, these methods do not address factors unique to colorectal surgery, wherein the tumor location and operation performed vary widely. VTE risk may extend past 30 days. Therefore, we aimed to determine the roles of tumor location and operation in VTE development and evaluate VTE incidence through 90 days postoperatively. STUDY DESIGN: Adult patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer between January 1, 200

Intra-abdominal desmoid fibromatosis mimicking tumour recurrence after the operation: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Desmoid fibromatosis is a multifactorial disorder classified as a category of intermediate, locally aggressive behaviour, which might be associated with CTNNB1 or APC mutations, trauma, surgery, or pregnancy. CASE REPORTS: We present two cases of postoperative intra-abdominal desmoid fibromatosis. The first case occurred 14 months after the resection of a retroperitoneal gastrointestinal stromal tumour. The second case was located in the mesentery, as evidenced on an 18-month followup after a laparoscopy-assisted anterior resection for adenocarcinoma at the rectosigmoid junction

A postsurgical prognostic nomogram for patients with lymph node positive rectosigmoid junction adenocarcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The definition of rectosigmoid junction (RSJ) is still in debate. The treatment and prognosis of patients with rectosigmoid junction cancer (RSJC) and positive lymph nodes (PLN-RSJCs) are mostly based on the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. Our study aims to assist clinicians in creating a more intuitive and accurate nomogram model for PLN-RSJCs for the prediction of patient overall survival (OS) after surgery. METHODS: Based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, we extracted 3384 patients with PLN-RSJCs and randomly divided th
