A Shape and Stiffness Adjustable Laryngoscope for Transoral Robotic Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngoscopes are essential tools in transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for visualizing and accessing the larynx. However, the rigidity and non-adjustable design of conventional laryngoscopes limit their ability to reach certain lesion areas, increasing patient invasiveness. This study presents a novel shape and stiffness adjustable laryngoscope to address these challenges. METHODS: The proposed laryngoscope features a spring-tendon layout that allows for stable bending through tendon actuation by a single motor. A lockable mechanism enhances stiffness, enabling the instrument to be

Surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy versus definitive radiotherapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the pharynx and larynx: a propensity score-matched analysis.

Aim: Locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the pharynx and larynx is commonly treated with either primary surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) or definitive RT with or without concurrent systemic therapy. Comparative outcome data between these treatment strategies remain limited because retrospective analyses are frequently affected by treatment-selection bias. This study compared oncologic outcomes between primary surgery followed by adjuvant RT and definitive RT using propensity score matching to reduce baseline confounding. Methods: A retrospective analysis was perform

Ionic liquid self-assembly enables high-loading inhalable delivery of remdesivir.

Clinical use of remdesivir (RDV), the first FDA-approved antiviral for COVID-19 treatment, is limited by poor aqueous solubility and intravenous administration. In this study, an inhalable dry powder (IDP) based on hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated cholinium ionic liquid (IL)-core liposomes (HA-CAGE-Lp@IDP) was developed to overcome these limitations. Two ILs, cholinium maleate (CAME) and cholinium geranate (CAGE), markedly enhanced RDV solubility. Mechanistic studies revealed distinct IL localization within liposomes, with CAME predominantly dissolved in the aqueous core, whereas CAGE self-assemble

Development and evaluation of bovine adenovirus vector-based avian influenza vaccine efficacy in poultry.

Avian influenza virus (AIV) remains a persistent threat to global poultry health and production, necessitating the development of novel and effective vaccination strategies. This study evaluated the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a newly developed bovine adenovirus-vector-based avian influenza virus (BAdV-AIV) vaccine expressing the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of H5N1 and the nucleoprotein (NP) gene of H7N9 AIV subtypes (BAdV - (H5N1)HA+(H7N9)NP). In our study, the candidate vaccine was administered via three mucosal routes: oral (OR), intranasal (IN), or intraocular (IO), using three d

A GLP-1 receptor agonist enhances islet microvascular flow through nitric oxide-dependent mechanisms in a diabetic mouse model: investigation using intravital two-photon imaging.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Impaired regulation of islet microvascular blood flow has been implicated in beta cell dysfunction in diabetes; this dysregulation is linked to endothelial dysfunction with reduced nitric oxide bioavailability. However, dynamic regulation of islet microvascular flow has not been directly examined in vivo. We hypothesised that acute pharmacological activation of the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) rapidly enhances islet microvascular flow through NO-dependent mechanisms under diabetic conditions. METHODS: Islet microvascular dynamics were visualised in vivo using int

A new look at the feeding behaviour of haematophagous Diptera: the biting habits of Leptoconops (Megaconops) floridensis Wirth (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)FIRST REVIEW ROUND - REVIEWERS' COMMENTSREVIEWERS' COMMENTS.

BACKGROUND: Understanding ecological relationships among species and their pathogens is essential for assessing disease dynamics and associated risks to human, animal, and environmental health. Some haematophagous ceratopogonid species feed on birds and may act as vectors for haemoparasites, viruses, and bacteria. However, no reports have documented these insects feeding within the internal organs of birds. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the first recorded occurrence of ceratopogonids feeding within the respiratory system of debilitated kelp gulls and cormorants. METHODS: As part of

Persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection in SCID rats reflects immune vulnerability of the upper airway and trachea.

UNLABELLED: In immunocompromised patients, persistent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection carries the risk of prolonged viral shedding and emergence of new variants. To reproduce the key features of persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection and evaluate its transmissibility, mouse-passaged SARS-CoV-2 was administered intranasally to severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) rats deficient in Rag2 and Il2rg genes. The virus replicated in SCID rats for at least 6 weeks without causing severe symptoms. The main replication sites were the nasal cavity and trachea, and replic

Protective efficacy of bacterial sialidase-based intranasal inactivated avian influenza vaccine against H5N1 infection in poultry.

The avian influenza virus (AIV) poses a serious threat to the poultry industry, leading to substantial economic losses and having the potential to cause severe zoonotic diseases worldwide. The development of mucosal vaccines has prompted greater attention due to their ability to mimic the natural infection process and streamline the delivery method. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and immunomodulatory responses of an intranasal vaccine containing inactive H5N1 virus and bacterial sialidase with mucoadhesive chitosan adjuvant. The results demonstrated that the challenged intranasally v

Nanostructured Silver-Coated Silicone Tracheal Stents Confer Hybrid Anti-Biofilm Activity In Vivo.

Bacterial colonization and biofilm formation remain major limitations of airway stenting, contributing to device obstruction and infection-related complications. Here, we translated to silicone tracheal stents a previously developed plasma-assisted micro/nanostructured silver interface designed to provide hybrid anti-biofilm activity through reduced bacterial adhesion and controlled silver release. The coated stents were characterized to confirm the generation of the nanostructured silver coating and were evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro, followed by in vivo

Nucleolin as a Crucial Player in Head and Neck Cancer: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Perspectives.

Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) encompasses a diverse group of malignancies arising in the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and related structures. It represents a significant global health bur- den due to its high incidence, aggressive progression, and strong associations with environmental and viral risk factors like tobacco use and HPV infection. HNC, particularly squamous cell carcinoma, ranks as the seventh most common cancer worldwide. Despite the established role of these risk factors, the molecular mechanisms driving disease progression remain underexplored, especially in the context of specif

Nasopharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal collapse: intra- and interrater agreement supports novel endoscopic scoring classifications in horses.

OBJECTIVE: The contribution of reduced airway patency from heightened inspiratory pressure or active muscular contraction to the pathophysiology of pharyngeal collapse is unknown. Existing classifications refer to the entire pharyngeal region; however, anatomical differences are evident between rostral and caudal collapse. Novel classifications and grading systems are proposed to differentiate 2 pathologies: nasopharyngeal collapse (NPC; collapse of ≥ 1 pharyngeal wall rostral to the tip of the epiglottis; grades 0 through 4), and laryngopharyngeal collapse (LPC; collapse of ≥ 1 pharyngeal wal

Anatomical reorganisation channels the emergence of the infant vocal repertoire.

Why do infants the world over begin their vocal lives with growls, grunts, squeals, and creaky phonation? And why does this pattern hold across radically different languages and caregiving environments? We propose that the mechanical geometry of the vocal tract at each developmental stage acts as a continuously changing constraint on what infant vocal exploration can discover. Beyond limiting what sounds are possible, this geometry actively generates certain acoustic events as the natural consequence of ordinary exploratory activity. In the neonatal larynx, tissue properties lower the threshol

Three Cases of Chylothorax After Lung Cancer Surgery: Possible Lymphatic Vessel Variation in the Upper Right Mediastinum.

Postoperative chylothorax is an uncommon complication after lung cancer resection. However, chylous leakage caused by iatrogenic injury of aberrant mediastinal lymphatic vessels often presents massive drainage and fails conservative treatment, requiring reoperation. A retrospective analysis was performed on three patients who underwent reoperation for refractory massive chylothorax after radical resection of right upper lobe lung cancer between October 2022 and November 2023 in our center. Intraoperatively, chylous fistulas were consistently detected at the junction of the upper margin of the

Evolutionary Background of Precise Vocal-Respiratory Temporal Coordination in Human Infants.

Human infants acquire speech through prolonged postnatal development. Sequential vocalizations, including speech, can be viewed as motor patterns consisting of alternating sound and silence. This temporal structure depends on the coordination of respiratory airflow and laryngeal activity, yet relatively little attention has been paid to how such timing control develops in infancy. In this review, we examine the development of vocal timing across two contexts: spontaneous vocalizations produced in nonsocial settings and vocal exchanges during face-to-face interactions. We highlight a developmen

The Respiratory Apparatus of Adult Spur-Winged Geese (Plectropterus gambensis): Gross Anatomy and Morphometrics.

The present study describes the gross morphological features and morphometric characteristics of the respiratory apparatus of adult Spur-winged Geese (Plectropterus gambensis), a resident waterfowl species of the Sudano-Sahelian wetlands of Nigeria. Ten ethically obtained adult birds comprising five males and five females were used for this purpose. A standardized gross dissection technique was employed following euthanasia to examine the respiratory viscera. The paired slit-like openings of the nostrils were dorsolateral at the base of the upper beak. The nasal cavity was divided into two equ
