Voice Fundamental Frequency Variation and Statin Therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Statins are considered a first-line treatment for dyslipidaemia, being the most frequently prescribed medicine worldwide. However, statin therapy has been associated with several adverse effects, including statin-associated myopathy, which may manifest with symptoms such as myalgia, muscle stiffness, and cramps. Because phonation involves skeletal muscles of the larynx, statin-related muscular effects may also influence vocal function. The fundamental frequency of the voice (FFF) depends on vocal fold length, mass, and tension and may therefore reflect alterations in laryngeal musc

The Effect Of Hyoid Movement On Vocal Fold And False Vocal Fold Configurations In Excised Human Larynges.

OBJECTIVES: While it is generally understood that extrinsic muscle activation may change larynx position and orientation, its effect on vocal fold configuration, particularly the medial surface shape, remains largely unknown. In this study, the effects of hyoid bone movement on the true and false vocal fold configurations were investigated in excised human larynges. METHOD: For each larynx, a window was opened on one thyroid lamina to provide a medial view of the true vocal fold and false vocal fold. The larynx was mounted vertically with the cricoid cartilage fixed. The hyoid bone position w

Kinematic Features of Laryngeal Motor Control in Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: Laryngeal kinematics were examined under high-speed videoendoscopy to examine laryngeal motor control of persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). METHOD: A retrospective analysis was performed on 24 people with idiopathic PD and 24 age- and sex-matched controls as they produced repetitions of the utterance /ifi/ at self-induced levels of vocal effort (typical, mild, moderate, and maximum effort). Two kinematic measures of laryngeal motor control were measured during vocal fold adduction: spatiotemporal index (STI; adductory variability across repeated utterances) and asymmetry index (A

A Shape and Stiffness Adjustable Laryngoscope for Transoral Robotic Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngoscopes are essential tools in transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for visualizing and accessing the larynx. However, the rigidity and non-adjustable design of conventional laryngoscopes limit their ability to reach certain lesion areas, increasing patient invasiveness. This study presents a novel shape and stiffness adjustable laryngoscope to address these challenges. METHODS: The proposed laryngoscope features a spring-tendon layout that allows for stable bending through tendon actuation by a single motor. A lockable mechanism enhances stiffness, enabling the instrument to be

Surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy versus definitive radiotherapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the pharynx and larynx: a propensity score-matched analysis.

Aim: Locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the pharynx and larynx is commonly treated with either primary surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) or definitive RT with or without concurrent systemic therapy. Comparative outcome data between these treatment strategies remain limited because retrospective analyses are frequently affected by treatment-selection bias. This study compared oncologic outcomes between primary surgery followed by adjuvant RT and definitive RT using propensity score matching to reduce baseline confounding. Methods: A retrospective analysis was perform

Incidence of transient sinus pause in cardiac rhythm increases with the use of hyperangulated videolaryngoscope blade compared to standard angle blade during tracheal intubation: A prospective randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The hyperanglulated videolaryngoscope blade may exert different forces on the larynx compared to the standard angle blade, potentially leading to haemodynamic changes, particularly in cardiac rhythm. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the hyperangulated blade on haemodynamic changes during tracheal intubation. DESIGN: A prospective randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Tertiary, university hospital, single centre. PATIENTS: A total of 134 patients scheduled for general anaesthesia were included in the final analysis. INTERVENTION: Tracheal intubation usin

Nucleolin as a Crucial Player in Head and Neck Cancer: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Perspectives.

Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) encompasses a diverse group of malignancies arising in the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and related structures. It represents a significant global health bur- den due to its high incidence, aggressive progression, and strong associations with environmental and viral risk factors like tobacco use and HPV infection. HNC, particularly squamous cell carcinoma, ranks as the seventh most common cancer worldwide. Despite the established role of these risk factors, the molecular mechanisms driving disease progression remain underexplored, especially in the context of specif

Nasopharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal collapse: intra- and interrater agreement supports novel endoscopic scoring classifications in horses.

OBJECTIVE: The contribution of reduced airway patency from heightened inspiratory pressure or active muscular contraction to the pathophysiology of pharyngeal collapse is unknown. Existing classifications refer to the entire pharyngeal region; however, anatomical differences are evident between rostral and caudal collapse. Novel classifications and grading systems are proposed to differentiate 2 pathologies: nasopharyngeal collapse (NPC; collapse of ≥ 1 pharyngeal wall rostral to the tip of the epiglottis; grades 0 through 4), and laryngopharyngeal collapse (LPC; collapse of ≥ 1 pharyngeal wal

Anatomical reorganisation channels the emergence of the infant vocal repertoire.

Why do infants the world over begin their vocal lives with growls, grunts, squeals, and creaky phonation? And why does this pattern hold across radically different languages and caregiving environments? We propose that the mechanical geometry of the vocal tract at each developmental stage acts as a continuously changing constraint on what infant vocal exploration can discover. Beyond limiting what sounds are possible, this geometry actively generates certain acoustic events as the natural consequence of ordinary exploratory activity. In the neonatal larynx, tissue properties lower the threshol

Evolutionary Background of Precise Vocal-Respiratory Temporal Coordination in Human Infants.

Human infants acquire speech through prolonged postnatal development. Sequential vocalizations, including speech, can be viewed as motor patterns consisting of alternating sound and silence. This temporal structure depends on the coordination of respiratory airflow and laryngeal activity, yet relatively little attention has been paid to how such timing control develops in infancy. In this review, we examine the development of vocal timing across two contexts: spontaneous vocalizations produced in nonsocial settings and vocal exchanges during face-to-face interactions. We highlight a developmen

The Respiratory Apparatus of Adult Spur-Winged Geese (Plectropterus gambensis): Gross Anatomy and Morphometrics.

The present study describes the gross morphological features and morphometric characteristics of the respiratory apparatus of adult Spur-winged Geese (Plectropterus gambensis), a resident waterfowl species of the Sudano-Sahelian wetlands of Nigeria. Ten ethically obtained adult birds comprising five males and five females were used for this purpose. A standardized gross dissection technique was employed following euthanasia to examine the respiratory viscera. The paired slit-like openings of the nostrils were dorsolateral at the base of the upper beak. The nasal cavity was divided into two equ

Autosomal recessive HOXA3 deficiency causes congenital athymia and laryngeal malformation.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of patients with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) phenotype lack a known genetic cause. In particular, the molecular basis of thymic defects is poorly understood. Homeobox (HOX) genes encode conserved transcription factors that control spatial body development. The function of human HOXA3 is undefined. OBJECTIVE: We characterize the first human with HOXA3 deficiency and investigate the role of HOXA3 in immune system development. METHODS: We performed clinical and immunological phenotyping, as well as genetic sequencing. A homozygous nonsense variant in HO

Scope and Scan Led Airway Care: Therapist Laryngeal Visualization.

Dysphagia and impaired vocal fold motion are common complications following endotracheal intubation in critically ill patients and are associated with adverse clinical outcomes. In the ICU setting, laryngeal dysfunction complicates core physiotherapy and respiratory therapy tasks, including noninvasive therapies, cough evaluation, and airway clearance. This clinically oriented narrative synthesis outlines how bedside visualization with transnasal fiberoptic laryngoscopy (TFL) and translaryngeal ultrasound (TLU) can improve individualized airway clearance strategies and optimization of noninvas

Toward a Functional Terminology: Reconsidering "Minor Laryngeal Clefts" as Interarytenoid Dysfunction.

Much confusion surrounds the terminology used to describe minor laryngeal clefts in pediatric otolaryngology. The widely accepted Benjamin-Inglis classification defined type 1 clefts as those where the interarytenoid mucosal is at the level of the vocal folds. However, many children with aspiration and intact supraglottic mucosa respond favorably to interarytenoid augmentation. This finding has prompted the use of terms to suggest a deficient, and clinically significant, anatomic anomaly including "deep interarytenoid notch," "deep interarytenoid groove," "low interarytenoid height," and "type

An Unexpected Finding in an Infant's Feeding Difficulty: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Feeding difficulties represent a common yet clinically nonspecific presentation in infants, characterized by diverse etiologies. Accurate diagnosis is often challenged by limited verbal expression in infants and potentially imprecise medical histories provided by caregivers, contributing to persistent management challenges in certain cases. We report a case of feeding difficulty in an infant by an uncommon etiology. Comprehensive evaluation ultimately revealed a soft foreign body lodged in the pharyngolaryngeal region. Although infrequent, soft foreign bodies should be considered a plausible,
