The past dental literature suggests that gagging in dental patients may be due to anatomic causes. Cephalometrically oriented lateral skull radiographs of 53 patients who were gaggers and of matched controls were examined for an anatomic cause of gagging. No evidence was found that the soft palate was especially long or steeply angled in patients who were gaggers. A population of 10,173 men, employed in 37 plants, was identified as having worked for at least one year in jobs involving probable exposure to vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) prior to January 1, 1973. During a recent 6 years period, we managed chronic empyema by decortication, either alone or in combination with thoracoplasty, in 58 patients: In 16 patients, the empyema was a complication of Paragonimus westermani infestation (PWI), in 20, tuberculosis (TB), and in 22, of varied origins. There were no operative deaths, and satisfactory or good results were obtained in 55 patients (94.8%). We believe that the result in a patient in whom thoracoplasty is required should be called satisfactory, not good. Only 55% of the TB group achieved a good result, compared with 89% of the other patients.

In sheep with long-standing fistulae of the caecum, proximal loop of the colon and rumen the motor activity of these parts of the intestine was studied using the balloon method. Slow isoprenaline infusion caused first inhibition of caecal contractions, followed by gradually decreasing intensity of contractions of the colon and rumen. Eight sheep were inoculated with Icelandic maedi strain M 88; 2 sheep served as control sheep and were in close contact with the inoculated ones. Rabbits were continuously exposed either to 200 parts per million carbon monoxide for 3, 4, and 6 weeks or to 1,900 parts per million carbon monoxide for 5 h. Blind light and transmission electron microscopic investigations showed no morphological changes in the lung parenchyma, lung vasculature or in pulmonary arteries of the exposed animals when compared with controls.
