The chondrocranium at stage 23 (27-32 mm C.-R., 8 postovulatory weeks) was studied in detail to fill the descriptive gap between 7 and 9 weeks. Serial sections of ten embryos, all belonging to the same developmental stage, were investigated and compared. Graphic and Perspektomat reconstructions were made from three embryos. The present investigation comprises a retrospective and a prospective study on children with middle ear effusion (MEE). It is shown that, in the majority of patients, middle ear effusion was found in combination with an infective disease of other parts of the upper respiratory system, especially in the maxillary sinuses. Lavage of the infected sinuses resulted in resolution of the middle ear effusion in about 85 per cent of the cases, while adenoidectomy, in patients in whom adenoid enlargement was found together with middle ear effusion, had only a minor effect.

Addition of adenosine (10-7 to 10-4 M) to the tear side of isolated corneas (Rana catesbeiana) produced a rapid, sustained increase in short-circuit current, potential difference, and radioisotopic chloride net flux. Intravenous injection of isoproterenol increases plasma renin activity (PRA) in anesthetized dogs. S. 464, a new beta adrenergic blocking agent, injected five minutes before isoproterenol, inhibits plasma renin hyperactivity. On the other hand, teclothiazide, a thiazide diuretic, induces no significant modification of the isoproterenol-induced increase of PRA. Canine Eustachian tube epithelium was examined by means of the scanning electron microscope. The part of the tube at the bone-cartilage junction was found to be the most active.
