A mortality study has been made to assess the carcinogenic effect of arsenic exposure by analyzing a group of certified chronic arsenic poisoning patients at a small mining village in Japan. Previous experiments have demonstrated that upward shifts in a rat's thermic response to certain drugs may be observed when these drugs have been paired on several occasions with agents that induce hypothermia. A "conditional hyperactivity" hypothesis suggests that these upward shifts may simply reflect drug elicited increases in body movements which translate into higher temperatures. The clinical, light microscopic, and ultrastructural features of a carcinoid tumor occurring in the larynx of an 80-year-old man are presented and compared with 22 laryngeal carcinoids described in the world literature. These 23 tumors occurred in persons from 45 to 80 years of age (mean age was 61 years) and were three times more common in men than in women. Hoarseness was the most common presenting symptom. Whereas disulfiram (DSF) is known to inhibit tumor formation resulting from a number of chemical carcinogens, such inhibition does not apply to nitrosamines. Malignant tumours with teratoid or blastomatous features are exceptionally rare in the upper respiratory tract with only 8 documented cases, including the 3 in this report. In this study, we measured the changes in binding characteristics of T3 to its nuclear receptor in lungs of rats from 2 days of age to adulthood. In all ages studied, we found a single class of binding sites with a mean Ka of 1.16 +/- 0.05 x 10(10) M-1. The specificity of the nuclear receptor, as judged by the relative affinities of thyroid hormone analogs, is in general agreement with data previously reported for lung and other organs. A significant decrease in the maximum binding capacity of the lung T3 receptor occurs between 30 and 40 days of age: 0 to 30 days, 0.208 +/- 0.005 pmole T3/mg

The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic characteristics of pulmonary muscular hyperplasia were analyzed in 13 patients who were seen over a 13 year period. The average follow-up period was 7.2 years (range, 1-13). Eight patients initially demonstrated interstitial disease radiographically and the radiographic diagnosis was "interstitial fibrosis." In a study of the lobar distribution of tumors in 250 consecutive cases of primary bronchial cancer, it was noted that 130 of the tumors originated in the upper lobes, 11 in the right middle lobe, and 49 in the lower lobes. Some 40 arose in the main bronchi, and most of the remainder were either "hilar" or unspecified in anatomic location. There was no apparent correlation of the lobar site of these tumors with the lobar location of childhood pneumonic lesions as observed in another group of patients in the same hospital.
