NEOPLASIA AND PROLIFERATIVE LESIONS IN FREE-RANGING MOUNTAIN AND GRAUER'S GORILLAS (GORILLA BERINGEI).

There are no published data on the occurrence of neoplasia in wild great apes of any species. The aim of this study was to utilize postmortem and histopathology reports collected from wild human-habituated mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) and Grauer's gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri) to determine both the incidence and types of spontaneous neoplasms and proliferative lesions that occur in these species. Pathology records of 194 mountain gorillas and 12 Grauer's gorillas necropsied from 1985 to 2020 were examined for all cases of neoplasia or hyperplastic/proliferative disease.

Clinicopathologic and Molecular Analyses of 2 Basomelanocytic Tumors and Literature Review.

Basomelanocytic tumors are rare cutaneous neoplasms characterized by an intimate admixture of basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Although basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and melanoma are commonly encountered individually, only a limited number of basomelanocytic tumors have been documented. We report the clinical and histologic features and molecular findings of 2 combined basomelanocytic tumors: 80-year-old man and 91-year-old-man, presented with lesions on the left upper lip and left forehead, respectively. The first tumor consisted of a close admixture of BCC, highlighted by p63 and keratin immu

Programmable melanoma-targeted radio-immunotherapy via fusogenic liposomes functionalized with multivariate-gated aptamer assemblies.

Radio-immunotherapy exploits the immunostimulatory features of ionizing radiation (IR) to enhance antitumor effects and offers emerging opportunities for treating invasive tumor indications such as melanoma. However, insufficient dose deposition and immunosuppressive microenvironment (TME) of solid tumors limit its efficacy. Here we report a programmable sequential therapeutic strategy based on multifunctional fusogenic liposomes (Lip@AUR-ACP-aptPD-L1) to overcome the intrinsic radio-immunotherapeutic resistance of solid tumors. Specifically, fusogenic liposomes are loaded with gold-containing

Early Stage Melanoma of the Vermillion with Mucosal Melanoma in Situ: A Clinical Conundrum.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma is a predominantly cutaneous malignancy associated with sun exposure. Mucosal melanoma is rare and carries a distinct pathogenesis from cutaneous tumors. The vermillion of the lip is a unique site that divides cutaneous from mucosal tissues. Tumors arising on the dry aspect are classified as cutaneous and those of the wet aspect are mucosal. The distinction is importation in tumor staging as all mucosal melanomas are classified as T3-T4b under the current 8th edition American Joint Committee of Cancer (AJCC) guidelines. METHODS: We describe a case of early stage melanoma

Actinic Cheilitis - From Risk Factors to Therapy.

Actinic cheilitis or solar cheilosis is considered a precursor of malignancy or even an in situ squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip, located most frequently on the lower lip. Actinic cheilitis (AC) has a higher likelihood of developing into invasive SCC of the lip, which is one of the deadliest non-melanoma skin cancers. Risk factors include chronic UV exposure, increasing age, male gender, fair phototypes, chronic scarring, immunosuppressive therapy, and tobacco use. From a clinical point of view, AC is characterized by dryness, scaling, atrophy, indistinct borders, and erosions. Ulcerat

Single-chain antibody-decorated Au nanocages@liposomal layer nanoprobes for targeted SERS imaging and remote-controlled photothermal therapy of melanoma cancer cells.

The development of theranostic platforms combining surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) imaging with NIR-stimulated photothermal therapy (PTT) is of utmost importance for the precise diagnosis and selective treatment of cancers, especially in superficial solid tumors. For this purpose, a versatile theranostic nanoprobe of liposomal layer-coated Au nanocages (AuNCs) was decorated with an anti-MUC18 single-chain antibody (scFv). 4-mercapto benzoic acid (p-MBA)-labeled AuNCs (p-AuNCs) were coated by a liposomal layer (p-AuNCs@lip), followed by conjugating anti-MUC18 scFv via post-insertion

Risk of Second Primary Cancer in Survivors of In Situ Melanoma.

Survivors of invasive melanoma have an increased risk of developing second primary cancers; however, similar risks associated with in situ melanoma have not been established. We evaluated 39,872 survivors of first primary in situ melanoma diagnosed from 1982 through 2012 in Queensland, Australia. Relative risk of second nonmelanoma primary cancers was estimated from standardized incidence ratios with 95% confidence intervals. A total of 4,823 (12%) in situ melanoma survivors developed a second primary cancer. A small increased risk (6%) compared with the general population was found. In those

A case of oral mucosal melanoma. Clinical and dermoscopic correlation.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with oral mucosal melanoma have had a mucosal hyper pigmented area for months or even years before the diagnosis, it is important to consider the differential diagnosis of mucosal melanoma, which in many cases is a difficult diagnosis and because of the aggressive biological behavior of mucosal melanoma it is important to do a quick diagnosis. MAIN OBSERVATION: A 40-year-old Mexican male patient, presented with a lesion on the lower right half of the lip covering almost the entire vermillion border, 1 mm below the white roll. The lesion was a 1.5 x 4 cm pigmented mac

Superficial paramucosal clear cell sarcoma of the soft parts resembling melanoma in a 13-year-old boy.

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of tendons and aponeuroses, also known as melanoma of soft parts, represents an aggressive rare malignancy that is characterized by a nested or fascicular pattern of spindled cells and a pathognomonic reciprocal translocation, t(12;22)(q13;q12), that results in the fusion of EWSR1 and ATF1 genes. Numerous recent studies have recognized the importance of a cutaneous CCS variant that can mimic a broad spectrum of entities, including spindle cell melanoma, spindle cell squamous carcinoma, cutaneous leiomyosarcoma and atypical fibroxanthoma. We report a case of a 13-year-o

Oral cancer in Enugu, Nigeria, 1998-2003.

Cancers of the oral cavity make up 3-4% of all cancers, being in eighth place in men and eleventh in women when the cancer is caused by smoking and alcohol misuse. In this study we recorded all oral cancers in Enugu, eastern Nigeria over the 6-year period from 1998 to 2003. We reviewed all patients who had a diagnosis of invasive oral cancer during this period from notes kept in the Records Department of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, Nigeria. Carcinoma-in-situ, lymphoma, and leukaemia were not included. All cases were categorised by the site of the tumour and the a

Lentigo maligna with spread onto oral mucosa.

BACKGROUND: Lentigo maligna (LM) is a form of melanoma in situ most often seen in white patients on sun-exposed areas, primarily the head and neck. Spread of LM onto the conjunctiva has been reported. There have been no reports of LM extending onto oral mucosa. OBSERVATIONS: We report 4 cases of LM in white women with contiguous spread from perioral areas to oral mucosa. The locations of the primary lesions were the vermilion of the lip, vermilion and perioral skin, cheek, and cutaneous aspect of the lip. Three cases showed focal histopathologic evidence of invasion during the course of the d

Simultaneous occurrence of multiple melanoma in situ on sun-damaged skin (lentigo maligna), solar lentigo and labial melanosis: the value of dermoscopy in diagnosis.

We report on a patient developing simultaneous occurrence of lentigo maligna lesions, solar lentigines and an extensive melanosis of the oral mucosa. Diagnostically, epiluminescence microscopy had a relevant role in the preoperative assessment and selection of suspicious pigmented lesions, as the lesions histologically labelled as lentigo maligna and solar lentigo were clinically indistinguishable. We review the clinical, dermoscopic and histopathologic differential diagnosis of solar lentigo, malignant lentigo and mucosal melanosis with other melanocytic and keratinocytic lesions and discuss
