Unexpected high-risk neoplasias among routine skin specimens.

INTRODUCTION: Turnaround time (TAT) for routine skin specimens may be prolonged at times, delaying diagnosis and treatment in cases with a unexpected high-risk neoplasia. This quality improvement study assessed the prevalence, types and characteristics of such cases. METHODS: This was a descriptive study of all routine skin specimens submitted by general practitioners (GPs) and private dermatologists in 2022-2023 at the Department of Pathology, Viborg Regional Hospital, Denmark. From Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED) codes, various premalignant and malignant neoplasias were ident

Outcomes of Mohs Micrographic Surgery Compared to Wide Local Excision for Malignant Melanoma and Melanoma In Situ.

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), traditionally used for non-melanoma skin cancers, has been used for some cases of melanoma. Using the TriNetX (TriNetX, LLC, Cambridge, MA, USA) database, two analyses were performed. The first compared wide local excision (WLE) and MMS for the management of malignant melanoma (MM) of the face, scalp, and neck. The second analysis compared WLE and melanoma in situ (MIS) of the same anatomical areas. WLE was associated with a significantly higher incidence of secondary and unspecified malignant neoplasms of the lymph nodes of the head and neck and secondary mali

Quality indicators: completeness, validity and timeliness of cancer registry data contributing to the European Cancer Information System.

UNLABELLED: Population-based Cancer Registries (PBCRs) are tasked with collecting high-quality data, important for monitoring cancer burden and its trends, planning and evaluating cancer control activities, clinical and epidemiological research and development of health policies. The main indicators to measure data quality are validity, completeness, comparability and timeliness. The aim of this article is to evaluate the quality of PBCRs data collected in the first ENCR-JRC data call, dated 2015. METHODS: All malignant tumours, except skin non-melanoma, and in situ and uncertain behaviour of

A real-world pharmacovigilance study of FDA adverse event reporting system events for sildenafil.

BACKGROUND: Sildenafil, a selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), is widely used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). However, the safety profile of sildenafil, including adverse event (AEs), requires comprehensive evaluation. METHODS: This retrospective pharmacovigilance study aimed to evaluate AEs linked to sildenafil by analyzing data sourced from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. A case/non-case design was utilized, and various algorithms including the reporting odds ratio (ROR), the proportional reporting ratio (PRR), the Bayesian confide

Prevalence of and Associated Factors for Eyelid Cancer in the American Academy of Ophthalmology Intelligent Research in Sight Registry.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of eyelid cancers in the American Academy of Ophthalmology Intelligent Research in Sight (IRIS) Registry and evaluate the associated factors. DESIGN: Retrospective IRIS Registry database study. PARTICIPANTS: All patients in the IRIS Registry between December 1, 2010, and December 1, 2018, with International Classification of Disease, ninth and 10th revisions, codes for eyelid cancers (basal cell carcinoma [BCC], squamous cell carcinoma [SCC], malignant melanoma [MM], sebaceous carcinoma/other specified malignant neoplasm [SBC], melanoma in situ [MIS], and

Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Cancer-Related Patient Encounters.

PURPOSE: While there are studies under way to characterize the direct effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the care of patients with cancer, there have been few quantitative reports of the impact that efforts to control the pandemic have had on the normal course of cancer diagnosis and treatment encounters. METHODS: We used the TriNetX platform to analyze 20 health care institutions that have relevant, up-to-date encounter data. Using this COVID and Cancer Research Network (CCRN), we compared cancer cohorts identified by querying encounter data pre-COVID (January 2019-April 2019) and current (

Non-ocular primary malignancies in patients with uveal melanoma: the Liverpool experience.

AIM: To identify the prevalence of self-reported non-ocular primary malignancies in patients at the time of diagnosis with uveal melanoma (UM) and to describe the cohort's characteristics. METHODS: A data query for cases of UM seen at the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Centre between January 1993 and May 2014 was performed. Only patients who had UM with other non-ocular primary malignancies were included. Demographic and clinical data were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 5042 (2563 males, 50.8%) patients with UM were found in the database; of whom, 216 (4.3%) had at least one other primary non-ocul

The effect of immunosuppression on pre-existing cancers.

This study of 939 pre-existing malignancies that occurred in 913 renal transplant recipients showed that in 823 patients the tumors were treated prior to or at transplantation, in 78 after transplantation, at an unspecified time in 20, while 18 received no treatment. Of patients treated pretransplantation 185 (22%) developed recurrences posttransplantation. Low recurrence rates (0-10%) occurred with incidentally discovered renal tumors; lymphomas; and testicular, uterine cervical, and thyroid carcinomas. Intermediate recurrence rates (11-25%) occurred with carcinomas of the uterine body; Wilms
