OBJECTIVE: To delineate the different types of inflammatory vascular diseases (IVD) occurring in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
METHODS: Muscle, nerve, or skin biopsy specimens from 148 symptomatic HIV-infected individuals were reviewed, and subgroups of vasculitis were identified using the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 1990 clinicopathologic criteria for the classification of vasculitis.

The aim of our study was to assess the behaviour of a despecified collagen tissue laid on desepidermized human skin (taking area of skin graft). The collagen tissue was prepared according to Bell's method. The collagen was latticed, contracted by fibroblasts, chemically treated (formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde) to stabilize the fibrils and then despecified by cialit treatment. This tissue laid on superficial, non infected wounds very rapidly took a necrotic appearance and was totally lysed after 10 to 12 days without any modification of the healing course. To determine the survival time once acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has developed, we analysed case records of 274 patients confirmed to have died of the disease. Of the 274 patients 193 were males and 81 females (M:F 2:1). The duration of symptoms ranged from a few weeks to two years but over 70% had apparently enjoyed good health until 2-3 months before diagnosis. Furuncles (boils) are common among teenagers; however, few outbreaks have been documented. We investigated an outbreak of furuncles that occurred among male athletes of a Kentucky high school during the 1986 to 1987 school year. The overall attack rate was 25% (31/124). To study the possible involvement of the complement system in inflammatory skin disorders, we measured the concentrations of C3a and C4a anaphylatoxins in the peripheral blood of 148 patients with various inflammatory skin disorders and 48 healthy control subjects by radioimmunoassay. The mortality patterns of 671 female laundry and dry cleaning workers for the period 1963--1977 were analyzed, using Wisconsin death certificate data.
