Lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast: preliminary results of treatment by ipsilateral mastectomy and contralateral breast biopsy.

This report describes the follow-up of 108 women who underwent ipsilateral mastectomy for lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). Twenty-four women found to have concurrent contralateral carcinoma underwent bilateral mastectomy. The contralateral breast was available for follow-up in the remaining 84 cases, including 33 patients who underwent contralateral biopsy and 51 others who did not have a biopsy of the opposite breast at the time of initial treatment. Five of these 84 patients later developed invasive cancer. Three had had a biopsy that revealed either atypia (two cases) or LCIS (one case). I

Cytoplasmic mucous globules in lobular carcinoma in situ. Diagnosis and prognosis.

In 87 cases of lobular carcinoma in situ, 64 contained mucous globules in more than 25% of the cells. Eighteen, however, had no or only a few mucous globules. In cancerization of lobules by duct carcinoma and in benign hyperplastic lesions, only a few cells contained mucous globules. The presence of many of these globules may be helpful in the diagnosis of lobular carcinoma in situ. On the other hand, the quantitation of mucous globules in lobular carcinoma in situ is not of prognostic significance.

Risk of subsequent contralateral breast carcinoma in a population of patients with in-situ breast carcinoma.

One hundred ninety-one cases of unilateral noninvasive breast carcinoma were studied with regard to the development of subsequent cancers in the contralateral breast. The majority of patients were treated by mastectomy and have been followed for an average of nine years. Their overall survival did not differ significantly from that of age-specific population survival figures for U. S. women. Among all cases, 13 or 6.8% subsequently developed contralateral carcinoma; 3.1% of these contralateral tumors were invasive. The authors found only one histological type, namely lobular carcinoma in-situ

Myoepithelial cells in lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast: a parallel immunocytochemical and ultrastructural study.

The distribution and morphology of myoepithelial cells in one case of normal breast and in 4 cases of lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) were studed by immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence with anti-actin antisera and by electron microscopy. The actin-rich cells appeared to lay flattened on the basement membrane, or perpendicular to it, or appeared dislodged toward the center of the neoplastic ductules in the different cases. It is proposed that the presence of actin-rich cells inside the neoplastic aggregates represents a process of colonization of lobular carcinoma by myoepithelial cells di

Signet ring carcinoma of the female breast: a clinicopathologic analysis of 24 cases.

Signet ring carcinomas of the breast have been separated recently as an aggressive subtype of breast cancer, distinct from mucinous (colloid) carcinomas. Twenty-four cases of signet ring breast cancer (2% of total breast cancers at the authors' institution) were analyzed. The authors' study indicates that histogenetically such lesions are derived from lobular, not ductal, cells since mucin patterns and ultrastructural features are shared. In addition, in each of our 24 cases, infiltrating lobular carcinoma was identified; in 11 of these (46%) lobular carcinoma in-situ (LCIS) was also noted. Si

[Subcutaneous mastectomy and reconstruction].

A method for subcutaneous mastectomy and reconstruction is described. To the patients the results of this method are pleasing. A specific advantage of this method is, that only in 20, 15% of these cases in recent years, we used silicone prosthesis for augmentation. An analysis of 333 cases showed some frightening facts: in 9,26% an invasive carcinoma was found. Furthermore, in 4,44% a lobular carcinoma in situ was found. A preoperative diagnosis was made, only in four of these fourty patients. Therefore, it can be stated that - as reconstruction possibilities by plastic surgery standards are g

Lobular carcinoma in situ in sclerosing adenosis. A potential source of confusion with invasive carcinoma.

A group of five different patients who had extensive sclerosing adenosis with ductules containing cells characteristic of lobular carcinoma were studied (six breasts in all). Because of the complex arrangement of ductules in sclerosing adenosis, the possibility of an invasive lobular carcinoma was considered in two cases. The distinction between sclerosing adenosis with lobular carcinoma in situ and infiltrating lobular carcinoma rests with the overall architecture of the lesion as seen at low power. Foci of sclerosing adenosis, with or without carcinoma in situ, have dilated ductules peripher

Actin-rich (myoepithelial) cells in lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast.

The presence and behaviour of the actin-rich (myoepithelial) cells has been investigated in thirteen cases of lobular carcinoma in situ (L.C.I.S.) of the breast, by means of an immuno-cytochemical method. The technique involved the use of fixed and embedded paraffin sections and of specific antibodies anti-SDS-denatured chicken gizzard actin. The distribution of the myoepithelial cells in L.C.I.S. was not constant. Three main patterns were detected. In some of the lesions the myoepithelial cells were confined to the periphery (pattern A), in others these cells were rather disarranged (pattern

Simultaneous bilateral cancer of the brease--evaluation of the use of a contralateral biopsy.

During a five-year period 299 female patients with breast cancer were treated by mastectomy. In 170 of the patients a biopsy of the contralateral upper lateral quadrant was performed during the operation. In 164 of the patients with primary carcinoma of ductal origin only 7 cases of malignancy in the contralateral biopsy were observed. In six females (3.5%) the primary cancer was of lobular origin and in three of these patients (50%) the contralateral biopsies showed lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). It is concluded that random contralateral biopsies of the breast should be restricted to patie

Lobular carcinoma in situ.

Lobular carcinoma in situ remains controversial in nomenclature, histology, and therapy. The original description and therapeutic recommendations remain a significant contribution to better control of breast cancer. We believe the sophistication of mammography, not available at the time of the earliest therapeutic recommendations, provides the clinician with a valuable and accurate new diagnostic tool for this disease. The risk factors from this disease entity have been well outlined by McDivitt [1] and others. We believe the patient should permitted to participate in the therapeutic decision

Disseminated lobular carcinoma - a predominantly pleomorphic lobular carcinoma of the whole breast.

Contrary to the usual distribution of lobular carcinoma in situ in a few lobules or terminal ducts, a case of disseminated lobular carcinoma is described occupying all lobules of the whole breast. The tumor developed in the left breast of a 61-year-old woman with the clinical symptoms of an increasing diffuse induration. The proliferating cells were predominantly pleomorphic with hyperchromatic nuclei and loss of cell cohesion. In 690 slides examined the tumor cells in lobules and ducts revealed various stages of proliferation with transition to invasive small cell carcinoma in 15 different ar

Juvenile papillomatosis (Swiss cheese disease) of the breast.

Thirty-seven cases of juvenile papillomatosis of the breast were reviewed. The average age was 19 years (range 10-44 years). On examination the patients usually had a localized, multinodular mass that was interpreted as a fibroadenoma. Microscopically, typical lesions featured papillomatosis, sometimes with severe atypia, cysts with or without apocrine metaplasia, duct stasis, and sclerosing adenosis. In one case the breast with papillomatosis adenosis. In one case the breast with papillomatosis has remained free of carcinoma, but at the time of biopsy the patient had secretory carcinoma of th

Coexistent lobular carcinoma in situ and intraductal carcinoma in a single lobular-duct unit.

Current classifications of mammary carcinoma generally divide noninvasive disease into two seemingly distinct categories: in situ lobular carcinoma and intraductal carcinoma. The two are considered to be independent entities which may sometimes coexist separately in the same breast. Three cases illustrated in this report each had classical histological changes of noninvasive duct and lobular carcinoma merging in single lobular-duct systems. The morphological separation of lobular carcinoma in situ and intraductal carcinoma may not be clear-cut in all cases. The existence of combined patterns m

Multicentricity of non-palpable breast cancer.

One hundred eighty-nine biopsies have been performed for clinically occult mammary lesions, detectable by mammography but not clinically apparent. Fifty-two cancers were demonstrated within this group, including 26 invasive ductal cancers, seven micro-invasive ductal cancers, 14 non-invasive ductal cancers, and five lobular carcinomas in situ. All mastectomy specimens were examined for multicentric foci of breast cancer in quadrants other than that in which the primary lesion was located. Of the invasive ductal cancers, 40% were multicentric. Of the micro-invasive ductal cancers, 57.1% were mu

[Lobular neoplasia of the breast (author's transl)].

Lobular Neoplasia of the breast, a term which we prefer to that of Lobular Carcinoma in Situ, is a multifocal microscopic entity of uncertain and controversial clinical significance. Lobular Neoplasia is a incidental histological finding among otherwise benign breast biopsies (0.5%-3.5%) depending mainly upon the diagnostic intensity. Its extent is rarely so massive that it makes up a palpable tumor. Although this lesion may be demonstrated at all ages after puberty it occurs most often in premenopausal women. The multicentricity is not below 70% and bilateral occurrence not below 30-35%. Demo
