Abnormal Rhomboid Lip and Choroid Plexus Should be Valued in Microvascular Decompression for Vestibulocochlear Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Surgical outcomes for functional vestibulocochlear diseases vary, and the influencing factors are not fully understood. The role of a rhomboid lip (RL) and choroid plexus (CP) in microvascular decompression (MVD) of the vestibulocochlear nerve has not been studied. This study aims to evaluate the surgical efficacy of MVD for vestibulocochlear diseases, with and without addressing the RL and CP, to enhance our understanding of their etiology. METHODS: A total of 15 patients who underwent MVD for the vestibulocochlear nerve between 2013 and 2022 were retrospectively identified and f

Molecular Modeling Analysis Provides Genotype-Phenotype Correlation Insights in a Patient with Ankyloblepharon-Ectodermal Dysplasia-Clefting Syndrome.

Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-cleft lip/palate (AEC) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder. AEC is caused by mutations in the TP63 gene that encodes the tumor suppressor p63 protein, itself involved in the regulation of epidermal proliferation, development, and differentiation. We present here a typical AEC case of a four-year-old girl with extensive skin erosions and erythroderma of the scalp and the trunk, and to a lesser extent of the limbs, nail dystrophy on the fingers and toes, xerophthalmia, a high-arched palate, oligodontia, and hypohidrosis. Mutation analysis of the TP63

Prosthodontic Management of a Patient with Ectodermal Dysplasia: Case Report.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is an inherited disorder that affects the ectoderm of a developing embryo and impacts structures that originate from it. It typically presents as a triad of missing teeth (anodontia/hypodontia), sparse hair (atrichosis/hypotrichosis), and lack of sweat glands (hypohidrosis), often accompanied by nail dystrophy and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. There are two main types of this condition: X-linked anhidrotic or hypohidrotic and hidrotic (autosomal type). The oral manifestation of ED may include anodontia or hypodontia, with or without cleft lip and palate. Tooth loss lea

Improving the oral function of patients with upper and lower lip tensor fascia lata slings for patients with flaccid facial nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve paralysis (FNP) often causes decreased quality of life and may lead to significant facial dysfunction. Oral competence is frequently raised as a concern by patients as it impacts nutrition, hydration, social participation, and mental health. This can result in social isolation and reduced capacity to return to vocational roles. Despite its prevalence, it is incompletely understood and rarely described. This study prospectively evaluated the impact that facial nerve static and dynamic reanimation has on oral competence, with a specific focus on speech intelligibility an

Disseminated cysticercosis with tongue involvement: a rare case report from Nepal.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Cysticercosis is a condition in which humans are infected by the larval form of the pork tapeworm Tenia solium. Cysticercosis in humans is common in the cerebral tissue but rare in the tongue. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, the authors report a rare case of a 38-year-old male with neurocysticercosis and cysticercosis of the tongue. The patient presented with a complaint of loss of consciousness for 4-5 min. Local examination of his oral cavity revealed a swelling of ~2×2 cm on the tongue. An MRI of the brain showed various stages of neurocysticercosis involving the neur

Blockage of HSP90 and IDO1 pathway by α-MSH modified nanoelicitor to dual-facilitate mild photothermal therapy.

Mild photothermal therapy (PTT) kills tumors at low temperatures (<45 °C) with less non-specific thermal diffusion through adjacent normal tissues, making it a promising antitumor strategy. Although mild PTT can directly convert light energy into heat to kill tumors and indirectly induce immune cell death to prime the immune response, it simultaneously induces negative regulatory factors in the body to resist antitumor functions. In particular, the direct killing effects were reversed by the upregulation of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) induced by mild PTT. The antitumor effects of T-cell-bas

Metastatic Melanoma to the Orbit With Dedifferentiation: A Case Report.

We present the first documented case of metastatic melanoma to the orbit with dedifferentiation. A patient with a history of melanoma of the lip and other poorly differentiated carcinomas presented with both a sub-brow and an intraorbital mass. Radiographically and intraoperatively, the sub-brow mass communicated with the intraorbital mass via perineural spread along the supraorbital nerve. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of melanoma based on the melanocytic markers, SOX-10 and Melan-A; dedifferentiation was demonstrated within the orbital tumor. Two weeks following surgical debulking,

No Excess Cancer Risk among Veterinarians in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden after the 1980s.

The cancer profile of veterinarians has received little research attention, despite the profession potentially being exposed to a wide range of known and suspected carcinogens. In this large-scale cohort study, we assessed cancer incidence in veterinarians in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, across more than 40 years (1961-2005). The cohort comprised 4708 veterinarians and 119,503 person-years at follow-up. The overall cancer incidence in veterinarians was close to the incidence in the total population in all countries and in all age groups. In male veterinarians, the standardize

Exercised-based cardiac rehabilitation associates with lower all-cause mortality in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Despite pharmacological therapies to improve outcomes of pulmonary hypertension (PH), poor long-term survival remains. Exercised-based cardiac rehabilitation (ExCR) may be an alternative strategy to improve prognosis. Therefore, using an electronic medical record (EMR) database, the objective of this study was to compare mortality between patients with primary PH with ExCR vs. propensity-matched PH patients without ExCR. METHODS: The retrospective analysis was conducted on February 15, 2023 using anonymized data within TriNetX, a global federated health research network. All patie

Electronic health record-wide association study for atrial fibrillation in a British cohort.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) confers a major healthcare burden from hospitalisations and AF-related complications, such as stroke and heart failure. We performed an electronic health records-wide association study to identify the most frequent reasons for healthcare utilization, pre and post new-onset AF. METHODS: Prospective cohort study with the linked electronic health records of 5.6 million patients in the United Kingdom Clinical Practice Research Datalink (1998-2016). A cohort study with AF patients and their age-and sex matched controls was implemented to compare the top 100 rea

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome candidate 1 (Whsc1) methyltransferase signals via a Pitx2-miR-23/24 axis to effect tooth development.

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a developmental disorder attributed to a partial deletion on the short arm of chromosome 4. WHS patients suffer from oral manifestations including cleft lip and palate, hypodontia, and taurodontism. WHS candidate 1 (WHSC1) gene is a H3K36-specific methyltransferase that is deleted in every reported case of WHS. Mutation in this gene also results in tooth anomalies in patients. However, the correlation between genetic abnormalities and the tooth anomalies has remained controversial. In our study, we aimed to clarify the role of WHSC1 in tooth development. We pr

Conventional Scalpel and Diode Laser Approach for the Management of Traumatic Fibroma.

An oral fibroma is a benign scar-like reaction frequently resulting from chronic mouth irritation. It is also called an oral polyp, fibrous nodule, localised intraoral fibrous hyperplasia, and traumatic fibroma. Chronic irritation from things like biting one's lips or cheek, orthodontic treatments, rubbing against a hard tooth, or wearing dentures or other dental prostheses is frequently the cause. It is often the same colour as the surrounding mouth lining, but occasionally, it can be paler or appear darker if it has bled. Trauma can cause the surface to become rough and scaly or ulcerated. I

Intraoral Lipoma: A Case Report.

The soft tissue tumor lipoma is quite frequent. Although it is the most mesenchymal tumor of the trunk and proximal regions of the extremities, it is quite uncommon to find it on the oral mucosa, accounting for just 1% to 5% of benign oral tumors. There is no specific location that is more prone to lipoma development in the mouth. Some frequent sites are the tongue, buccal mucosa, and the mouth's floor. A Yellowish mass with no symptoms is the normal clinical appearance. In most cases, the overlaying epithelium is unharmed, and superficial blood vessels may be seen passing through and around t

Mucous Extravasation Cyst Associated With the Lower Lip and Its Management: A Case Report.

A 15-year-old female patient was reported with swelling on the right side of the lower lip for 15 days. A provisional diagnosis of mucocele was obtained based on the patient's history and clinical examination. Under all aseptic conditions and administration of local anesthetic, surgical mucocele removal was done using a scalpel. An excised soft tissue specimen was given for histopathological examination, confirming the final diagnosis of mucous extravasation phenomena or mucocele. Recall examination after seven days reveals satisfactory lesion healing and no discomfort. This case report demons

Unusual presentation of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) on lip mimicking mucocele: A rare case report with review.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively rare, slow-growing low-grade malignant salivary gland tumour with high recurrence. It accounts for 1% of all malignant tumour of the oral and maxillofacial region. A high incidence of cases occurs between the fifth and sixth decades of life. Surgical excision with required radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and combined therapy are possible treatment choices. In this present case, a 36-year-old male patient was diagnosed with ACC on the upper lip. The clinical presentation of this lesion resembled mucocele. There are only a few cases reported of ACC invo

A Rare Occurrence of Mucocele in the Floor of the Mouth of an Infant.

A mucocele is a prevalent benign oral lesion distinguished by the extravasation or retention of mucous within submucosal tissue originating from minor salivary glands. Mucoceles predominantly manifest on the lower lip, followed by occurrences on the floor of the mouth and the buccal mucosa. Trauma and lip biting habits are one of the main causes of lesions. Mucoceles are rarely observed in infants. This paper highlights an atypical case of mucocele located within the floor of the mouth in the first year of life (9 months old) in a child who was treated successfully with complete surgical excis
