Clinical polymorphism of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis: combination of the clinical and the parasitological diagnosis.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is a neglected tropical disease caused by Leishmania (L.) major. This zoonosis is characterized by a broad-spectrum clinical polymorphism and may be underestimated and poorly treated since it is a simulator of various dermatoses. The aim of our study was to analyze the clinical polymorphism of patients with ZCL. A total of 142 patients with confirmed CL based on the microscopic examination of skin lesion biopsies were included in this study. Molecular typing of Leishmania species revealed that all patients were infected with L. major. In total, 14 clinica

parts of the world (1,2). CL is characterized by significant clinical variability. An ulcerated nodule on the exposed parts of the body (corresponding to the parasite inoculation site by the vector insect) is the classic presentation. However, other forms of clinical presentations also exist (3,4). CL can be present on unusual locations such as the scalp, the genital region, or palmoplantar areas. Localization in the foot poses a diagnostic challenge due to similarity to disorders which produce ulcerations. The latter include diabetes and leprosy. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae bacteremia treated with linezolid.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a common zoonotic pathogen that rarely causes diseases in humans. It has three main disease manifestations: a localized cutaneous, a disseminated cutaneous, and a systemic form of infection, typically characterized as bacteremia with or without endocarditis. Human infections are often associated with occupational exposure to animals, animal products, or their excreta. We present a case of a 60-year-old woman found to have E. rhusiopathiae bacteremia associated with a leg laceration sustained after she fell into a sewer drain. Germane animal exposures were not id

Erysipeloid Leishmaniasis: A Case Series.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis can present in many different clinical forms. Diagnosis of atypical forms is often delayed. It is useful to keep in mind the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis, a mimicking disease, to reduce unnecessary treatment and patient morbidity. Erysipeloid leishmaniasis should be considered when presented as long-term erysipelas-like lesions that do not respond to antibiotics. We want to present our five patients with erysipeloid leishmaniasis, one of the atypical clinical forms.

Skin metastasis revealing lung carcinoma.

Skin metastasis is a relatively rare complication of pulmonary carcinoma. The clinical features are varied and can present as sclerodermoid, bullous, erysipeloid, or alopecia, but they can also manifest as skin nodules, as in our case. We report a case of a 66-year-old man exhibiting this unusual manifestation. This case report aims to review and describe different findings in ultrasound, CT and pathology, to establish the diagnosis of pulmonary carcinoma manifested by skin metastasis.

Did the updated Duke criteria missed Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from the list of typical microorganisms causing infective endocarditis?

Infectious endocarditis is a severe condition still characterized by a high morbidity and mortality rate. An early diagnosis may positively impact the outcome, so we need our diagnostic tools to match with the ever-changing epidemiologic and microbiologic landscape of infectious diseases. We read with great interest the update to the Modified Duke Criteria for the diagnosis of Infectious Endocarditis recently proposed by the International Society for Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases and decided to propose the addition of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae to the list of typical microorganisms caus

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Infection Associated with Swollen Head Syndrome in a Broiler Breeder Flock in North Georgia.

An unusual case of swollen head syndrome in a 55-wk-old broiler breeder flock was identified in north Georgia in the summer of 2019. The presenting complaint was elevated mortality and visibly swollen heads. Necropsy of affected birds on the farm primarily revealed signs of bacterial septicemia, with few large scab lesions near the vent area. Bacterial culture analysis identified multiple organisms, but the primary organism of interest was identified as Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, cultured from affected liver, lung, sinuses, and one swollen wattle of birds in the affected house. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae cellulitis with associated bacteraemia following seafood preparation.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a pleomorphic Gram-positive bacillus, zoonotic pathogen of mammals, birds and fish. Human disease caused by this organism most commonly occurs following occupational or recreational exposure to infected animals and typically presents as a localised cutaneous disease. Invasive infection resulting in bacteraemia, endocarditis or other distant sequelae is infrequently seen. Most commonly, invasive infection is seen in patients with predisposing risk factors including diabetes, immunocompromising conditions, alcohol use disorder or chronic kidney disease. The organi

Systemic Erysipelas Outbreak among Free-Ranging Bottlenose Dolphins, San Diego, California, USA, 2022.

We diagnosed fatal Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae sepsis in 3 stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) during summer 2022, in San Diego, California, USA. The previously undetected disease in this relatively small, regional population of dolphins most likely indicates an environmental or biological change in the coastal ocean or organisms.

Erysipeloid cutaneous leishmaniasis: a study of 40 cases of an unusual variant.

BACKGROUND: Erysipeloid cutaneous leishmaniasis (ECL) is known as the chronic form of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). However, keeping its clinical presentation in view, there is a need to revisit this form of the disease. AIMS: To describe ECL in view of clinical features and treatment modalities. METHODS: We include a case series seen in Sfax (Southern Tunisia) from January 2017 to January 2021. All patients clinically suggestive and laboratory confirmed with a diagnosis of CL were registered. Patients of all age groups and of either gender having cutaneous lesions resembling erysipela on th

The C-Terminal Repeat Units of SpaA Mediate Adhesion of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae to Host Cells and Regulate Its Virulence.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a causative agent of erysipelas in animals and erysipeloid in humans. However, current information regarding E. rhusiopathiae pathogenesis remains limited. Previously, we identified two E. rhusiopathiae strains, SE38 and G4T10, which were virulent and avirulent in pigs, respectively. Here, to further study the pathogenic mechanism of E. rhusiopathiae, we sequenced and assembled the genomes of strains SE38 and G4T10, and performed a comparative genomic analysis to identify differences or mutations in virulence-associated genes. Next, we comparatively analyzed 25

Triple Threat: A Case of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Septicemia Complicated by Multi-Valvular Endocarditis, Spinal Osteomyelitis, and Septic Embolic Stroke.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a Gram-positive rod associated with zoonotic infections, most commonly the soft tissues. It can be present in several ways, though most commonly as erysipeloid. Rarely, it may manifest systemically with septic organ involvement such as endocarditis or osteomyelitis. Here, we present the case of a 71-year-old male who presented to the hospital with back pain and neurological deficits. He was found to be bacteremic with E. rhusiopathiae, and imaging demonstrated the presence of multi-valvular endocarditis, spinal osteomyelitis with epidural abscess, and septic emb

Human Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection via bath water - case report and genome announcement.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a facultative anaerobic, environmentally stable, Gram-positive rod that causes swine and avian erysipelas as a zoonotic pathogen. In humans, the main manifestations described are circumscribed erysipeloid, generalized erysipeloid, and endocarditis. Here, we report a 46-year-old female patient who presented to the physician because of redness and marked functio laesa of the hand, in terms of a pain-related restricted range of motion, and was treated surgically. E. rhusopathiae was detected in tissue biopsy. The source of infection was considered to be a pond in w

Draft Genome Sequences of Erysipelothrix sp. Strains Isolated from Stranded Septic Bottlenose Dolphins in Alabama, USA.

We report the genome sequences of two Erysipelothrix isolates from fatal cases of sepsis in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The genomes were found to be most closely related to Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and Erysipelothrix piscisicarius. This information expands our knowledge of the genetic characteristics of this pathogen, which can affect free-ranging marine mammals.
