Characterization of pathogenic roles of two Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae surface proteins.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is the causative agent of animal erysipelas and human erysipeloid. E. rhusiopathiae HP0728 and HP1472 have been reported to be down regulated in low-virulence or avirulent strains, but their pathogenic roles are not known. In this study, it was found that E. rhusiopathiae HP0728 and HP1472 were displayed on the surface of E. rhusiopathiae. Moreover, recombinant HP1472 could adhere to pig vascular endothelial cells. Recombinant HP0728 could bind host plasminogen but could not bind fibronectin. In conclusion, our work suggested that HP0728 and HP1472 are virulence fa

Clinical Presentation of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is based on the microscopic detection of amastigote, isolation of the parasite, or the detection of Leishmania DNA. Nevertheless, since these techniques are time consuming and not usually available in many endemic countries, the diagnosis remains clinical. Consequently, such disease may be overlooked because of its similarity to other skin diseases. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical polymorphism of CL caused by Leishmaniamajor. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out on 166 patients. Diagnoses were made b

Clinical Features of Anthroponotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in a Major Focus, Southeastern Iran, 1994-2014.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is associated with a broad and complex clinical spectrum of diseases. The objectives of this study were to assess the clinical features and identification of the causative agents of CL in a well-known focus of anthroponotic CL (ACL) caused by Leishmania tropica, southeast Iran. METHODS: This study was performed randomly as a descriptive cross-sectional survey to evaluate 2000 CL patients by active and passive case-detection approaches in Kerman Province from 1994 to 2014. The ACL patients were confirmed by direct smear and 600 cases by one or a combina

Infectious tenosynovitis with bloodstream infection caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a case report on an occupational pathogen.

BACKGROUND: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is an established animal pathogen, which may cause infections in humans. It is a gram-positive rod and found in the tonsils or the digestive tracts of animals. The bacterium is occupationally related, as usually only people with frequent animal contacts are infected. We report a case of a patient who was admitted with an infectious tenosynovitis with bloodstream infection due to E. rhusiopathiae, and to our knowledge, this is the first report of a tenosynovitis with systemic manifestation associated with this bacterium. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year old

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae bloodstream infection - A 22-year experience at Mayo Clinic, Minnesota.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a facultatively anaerobic Gram-positive bacillus found mostly in swine, fish and sheep. E. rhusiopathiae classically causes cutaneous eruptions in butchers, fish handlers and veterinarians. Based solely on case reports, 90% of E. rhusiopathiae bloodstream infections (BSI) have been associated with infective endocarditis (IE). To assess the true frequency of IE in E. rhusiopathiae BSI as well as other clinical associations, we performed a retrospective cohort analysis of E. rhusiopathiae BSI at Mayo Clinic. This is a single-centre, retrospective study conducted b

Erysipelothrix Rhusiopathiae Bacteremia without Endocarditis: Rapid Identification from Positive Blood Culture by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry. A Case Report and Literature Review.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a Gram-positive bacillus that is infrequently responsible for infections in humans. Three forms have been classified: a localized cutaneous form (erysipeloid) caused by traumatic penetration of E. rhusiopathiae, a generalized cutaneous form and a septicemic form. The latter type of disease has been previously associated with a high incidence of endocarditis. Here we report a case of E. rhusiopathiae bacteremia in a 74-year-old man, probably started from an erysipeloid form, in which endocarditis did not develop. This case presents some particular and uncommon fe

Proteomic and Transcriptomic Analyses of Swine Pathogen Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Reveal Virulence Repertoire.

E. rhusiopathiae is the causative agent of erysipelas in animals and erysipeloid in humans, but its pathogenicity is poorly understood. To identify virulence factors associated with E. rhusiopathiae and screen engineered vaccine candidates, we used proteomics and transcriptomics to compare the highly virulent strain HX130709 with an isogenic avirulent derivative, HX130709a. 1,299 proteins and 1,673 transcribed genes were identified and 1,292 of the proteins could be associated with genes. In a comparison between HX130907 and HX130709a, 168 proteins and 475 genes exhibited differences in regula

Evaluation of anti-Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae IgG response in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus to a commercial pig vaccine.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is the causative agent of erysipeloid in humans and of erysipelas in various animals, including bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus, in which an infection has the potential to cause peracute septicemia and death. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of using an off-label porcine (ER BAC PLUS®, Zoetis) E. rhusiopathiae bactrin in a bottlenose dolphin vaccination program by determining the anti-E. rhusiopathiae antibody levels in vaccinated dolphins over a 10 yr period. Serum samples (n = 88) were analyzed using a modified fluorescent microbead i

Surgical treatment of recidivist lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a chronic disease with a progressively ingravescent evolvement and an appearance of recurrent complications of acute lymphangitic type; in nature it is mostly erysipeloid and responsible for a further rapid increase in the volume and consistency of edema. The purpose of this work is to present our experience in the minimally invasive treatment for recurrence of lymphedema; adapting techniques performed in the past which included large fasciotomy with devastating results cosmetically; but these techniques have been proposed again by the use of endoscopic equipment borrowed from th

Systemic Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection not associated with endocarditis highlighting bacteriological diagnosis difficulties Case report and literature review.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is mostly isolated in swine causing erysipelas. Human invasive infections due to E. rhusiopathiae remain poorly described and interestingly bacteraemia associated with endocarditis are a source of ineffective empirical antibiotherapy. We report a case of sepsis without endocarditis due to E. rhusiopathiae and a review of the literature.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae bacteremia: a challenging diagnosis!

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a Gram-positive bacillus, is reported to cause for cutaneous infections and endocarditis. We report a case of E. rhusiopathiae bacteremia without severe clinical illness. The patient, a 74-year-old man, is suffering from a chronic lymphoid leukemia (LLC). Following a trauma, the patient developed a bruise on the left inch. Because the site of shock seemed clinically infected, oral amoxicilline-acid clavulanic (AAC) treatment was started after withdrawn 1 set of blood cultures. These blood culture specimens yielded a Gram-positive bacillus identified as E. rhusiopa

Carcinoma erysipeloides as a presenting feature of breast carcinoma: A case report and brief review of literature.

Carcinoma erysipeloides (CE) is an uncommon but distinctive form of cutaneous metastasis that usually manifests clinically as a fixed erythematous patch or plaque resembling cellulitis or erysipelas. The inflamed area may show a distinct raised edge at the periphery and also edema secondary to lymphatic obstruction. Histologically, dense carcinoma cells in the dermal vascular channels and dense perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate may be seen. CE may rarely be the first sign of "silent" tumor of breast. We report a case of a 52-year-old married lady who presented with a three months history of

Erysipeloid rash: A rare adverse event induced by gemcitabine.

Some rare cases of erysipelas-like or pseudocellulitis have been reported in relation to gemcitabine. This rare adverse event is more frequent in the presence of edema. Here, we report a case of pseudocellulitis after adjuvant treatment for pancreatic cancer. Oncologists should be aware of this infrequent and non-well understood adverse event. They should be especially careful when administering gemcitabine in the presence of lymphedema.

Unusual forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania major.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to Leishmania major (L. major) is common in the Middle East; however, this skin infection may be under-diagnosed when it presents atypically. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the occurrence of uncommon presentations of CL that may elude diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed among patients who presented at The Sheba Medical Center between 2005 and 2014 with atypical clinical presentations of CL due to L. major. RESULTS: Twelve patients with unusual clinical presentations of L. major CL were identified. All infections were ac
