Facial Cellulitis Mimicking Ludwig's Angina in a Patient with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia on Dasatinib Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Immunosuppressed patients are at an increased risk for developing odontogenic and orofacial infections, which can present with atypical processes and features that may mimic rare but life-threatening infections such as Ludwig's angina. Differentiating cellulitis from a deep neck space infection is often challenging in this population in acute settings due to a broad differential diagnosis and blunted inflammatory responses. This diagnostic uncertainty complicates acute risk stratification and may delay recognition of conditions requiring early airway evaluation and intervention. C

Responsibility sharing among children with Type 1 Diabetes and their caregivers: a cross-sectional survey from North India using the Diabetes Family Responsibility Questionnaire (DFRQ).

INTRODUCTION: Reconstruction has evolved long way from primary closure to flaps. As time evolved, better understanding of vascularity of flap has led to the development of innovative reconstructive techniques. These flaps can be raised from various parts of the body for reconstruction and have shown least donor site morbidity. We use one such peroneal artery perforator flap for tongue reconstruction with advantage of thin pliable flap, minimal donor site morbidity and hidden scar. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our patient 57yrs old lady underwent wide local excision with selective neck dissection. P

Real-world outcomes of photoimmunotherapy for oral sites in head and neck cancer: A multicentre subgroup analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical outcomes and supportive-care needs in photoimmunotherapy (PIT) restricted to oral sites in a multicentre real-world cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 40 consecutive patients with unresectable, locally recurrent head and neck cancer undergoing PIT between 1 January 2021 and 31 August 2024. The oral-site subgroup comprised 12 patients receiving ≥1 illumination to the oral cavity (tongue, gingiva, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth, hard palate, or flap). The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). Secondary endpoints included time-to-treatment f

Etiologic heterogeneity across oral cavity cancers.

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancers are generally considered etiologically similar, with a majority (>75%) attributable to smoking/alcohol. Yet, incidence trends for oral cavity cancers have recently diverged in the United States and several European countries (with declines for most oral cavity cancers but increases for oral tongue cancers), suggesting etiologic differences. This study quantified etiologic heterogeneity across oral cavity cancers using data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. METHODS: Cox regression models were used to quantify associations (hazard ratios [HRs] and populati

Angiomyxolipoma of the hard palate: a rare case report.

Lipoma is a common, benign soft tissue neoplasm consisting of mature adipocytes. Other variants exist, notably angiomyxolipoma, also referred to as vascular myxolipoma, which is an exceedingly rare benign lipomatous tumor characterized by the intimate admixture of three components: mature adipose tissue, paucicellular myxoid stroma, and a prominent vascular network. We present the case of a 55-year-old female patient who presented with a palatal swelling. Histopathological examination after surgical excision revealed an angiomyxolipoma. No abnormalities were noted after one year. Angiomyxolipo

Longitudinal Multicompartment Oral Mucositis Assessment in Adults Undergoing Myeloablative Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: A Contemporary Prospective Cohort Analysis.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent, debilitating complication of myeloablative allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). OM grading tools used in HCT practice rely on subjective or summary scoring, potentially missing clinically important details. To test the performance of the oral mucositis assessment scale (OMAS), a validated comprehensive OM assessment tool that collects granular objective findings from 7 intraoral sites, in a contemporary cohort. We longitudinally evaluated site-specific OM characteristics using OMAS in 47 myeloablative allogeneic HCT recipients. A total of 249

A prospective cohort study testing whether oral cavity mucosal tissue variability influences elastic scattering spectroscopy (ESS) measures.

OBJECTIVE: Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) has been shown to accurately discriminate between benign and malignant tissue in the oral cavity, which makes it a promising technology to assist with intraoperative oral cancer margin guidance. However, some spectroscopy-based technologies are influenced by locoregional histopathological differences, which can influence diagnostic accuracy and data acquisition procedures. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which ESS spectral readings of mucosal tissue varied between different anatomic regions of the oral cavity in a cohort

The continuous evolution of concepts in compartmental resections for oral cavity cancer: principles, indications, and outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper is aimed at synthetizing the conceptual basis of compartmental surgery (CS) for tumours of the anterior (floor of mouth and oral tongue) as well as posterior (base of tongue, superior and inferior gingival-buccal sulcus extending into the masticator space and infratemporal fossa) oral cavity, its indications, and outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: In spite of numerous bioendoscopic, radiological, and surgical advancements in management of oral cancer, its oncologic surgical control continues to be hampered by a considerable risk of local recurrence rate. Sublingual Lipoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Sublingual lipoma is an exceptionally rare benign lesion of the floor of the mouth and a potential diagnostic challenge because its clinical and radiologic features can overlap with those of other benign lesions. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with a painless mass in the left floor of the mouth. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested an epidermoid cyst, whereas surgical excision and histopathological examination confirmed a lipoma involving the sublingual gland region. The postoperative course was uneventful. This case highlights that sublingual lipoma should be consider

High Incidence of Mandibular Osteoradionecrosis After Radiotherapy for Oral Cavity: Time for Rebalancing Risks and Benefits.

AIMS: Limited evidence exists on the incidence of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) specifically for oral cavity (OC) cancer alone. The primary objective of this study was to determine the incidence of ORN for each subsite of the OC. The secondary objective was to analyse the risk factors for ORN development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2010 and 2021, a total of 2517 head and neck cancer patients underwent radical or adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) at our centre. Of these, 254 patients with an OC primary cancer were identified and were included in this analysis. RESULTS: Of the 254 patients, ORN develo

Real-World Correlation Between Radiologic and Pathological Depth of Invasion in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Cohort of 261 Patients.

PURPOSE: The prognostic significance of pathological depth of invasion (p-DOI) is widely acknowledged, leading to its inclusion in the clinical and pathological staging systems for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) in the 8th Edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual. However, radiologic assessment of DOI (r-DOI) remains challenging, and limited evidence exists regarding its correlation with p-DOI, the current gold standard. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between r-DOI and p-DOI in a large, real-world cohort. METHOD: Following Institutional Review Board approval, we evaluated 2

Anesthetics and cancer biology: Translational evidence from perioperative modulation to drug repurposing (Review).

BACKGROUND: Reports suggest that children with mobility impairment represent a significant proportion of the population living with a disability. Footwear is considered to be the key extrinsic factor affecting children's gait and footwear modifications have been historically postulated to assist with locomotory difficulty. Although therapeutic footwear has been considered within the literature, there is a lack of consistency on terminology and paucity on the overall understanding. A scoping review was performed to chart the key concepts in children's footwear and to establish the range of stud

Active learning for the accelerated discovery of complex concentrated NiCoCr alloys in additive manufacturing.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is closely associated with climate change and, in particular, with global warming. In addition to melting of ice and snow, rising sea level, and flooding of coastal areas, global warming is leading to a tropicalization of temperate marine ecosystems. Moreover, the effects of air pollution on airway and lung diseases are well documented as reported by the World Allergy Organization. METHODS: Scientific literature was searched for studies investigating the effect of the interaction between air pollution and climate change on

HPV-Associated Sarcomatoid (Spindle Cell) Carcinoma of the Base of the Tongue with HRAS and TERT Promoter Mutations.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomatoid carcinoma is an aggressive and uncommon variant of squamous cell carcinoma that is rarely encountered in the oropharynx. Distinguishing this entity from true sarcomas or reactive stromal proliferations can be challenging, particularly in cases where the conventional squamous component is minimal or not readily apparent. Molecular characterization of head and neck sarcomatoid carcinomas remains sparse. METHODS: A 62-year-old male with no significant past medical history presented with an exophytic mass involving the right base of tongue and floor of mouth. The lesion ex

Development and validation of a human 2D in vitro model of oral Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection.

OBJECTIVES: The global rise in Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infections, particularly oropharyngeal cases, drives treatment failures from antibiotic resistance. However, infection dynamics within oropharyngeal sites remain unclear. We developed an in vitro model using three human oropharyngeal epithelial cells to investigate infection dynamics and evaluate treatment strategies. METHODS: Tonsillar, floor of mouth (FOM) and gingival cell lines were infected with NG strains: antimicrobial-susceptible FA1090 and antimicrobial-resistant WHO-R. Oral commensal Neisseria oralis served as a bacterial neg

Fatty acids-based compounds as novel prophylaxis or treatment for oropharyngeal Neisseria gonorrhoeae: an in vitro study.

Oropharyngeal gonorrhoea remains a global challenge due to rising antimicrobial resistance and limited therapeutic options, necessitating urgent calls for new treatments and prophylaxis. This study evaluates the in vitro activity of arginine-based fatty acids against Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) strains in a validated oropharyngeal model. Five oropharyngeal cell lines (tonsillar/buccal/gingival/floor of mouth/uvular) were infected with two NG strains. Intracellular infection was assessed at 15/30/60 min. MIC₉₀ and cytotoxicity of five arginine-based fatty acids were determined. Promising candida

Epigenetic Suppression of RASAL1 by HDAC3 and Cofactor YY1 Promotes Fibroblast-Myofibroblast Transition and Renal Fibrosis.

AIM: Astronauts return to Earth with reduced red cell masses and hypovolaemia. Not surprisingly, when they stand, their heart rates may speed inordinately, their blood pressures may fall, and some may experience frank syncope. We studied autonomic function in six male astronauts (average +/- SEM age: 40 +/- 2 years) before, during, and after the 16-day Neurolab space shuttle mission. METHOD: We recorded electrocardiograms, finger photoplethysmographic arterial pressures, respiration, peroneal nerve muscle sympathetic activity, plasma noradrenaline and noradrenaline kinetics, and cardiac outpu

[Interest as Catalyzer: The Role of Interest in the Use of Incremental Scaffolds in Inquiry-Based Learning].

BACKGROUND: Use of human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is a promising strategy for cell therapy in injured tissues recovery. However, MSCs acquire genetic changes when cultivated in vitro that make them more susceptible to undergo neoplastic transformation. Therefore, genomic integrity of stem cells should be monitored carefully for the use in basic research and clinical trials, including karyotype analysis to confirm the absence of genetic instability. Here, we report a case of a male 67-year-old patient selected to join the study: "Autologous transplantation of mesenchymal cells for treat

Synchronous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of sublingual gland and pleomorphic adenoma of palatal gland-a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The synchronous development of multiple, histologically distinct primary salivary gland tumors is exceedingly rare, especially with involvement of both major and minor glands. Although growing research has advanced epidemiological understanding, clinical management continues to be significantly impeded by underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We present an 18-year-old female with two slow-growing, asymptomatic masses over a two-year period. The palatal mass showed gradual enlargement and mucosal protrusion. In contrast, the sublingual mass grew more rapidly, becoming
