Utility of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology in fine needle aspiration cytology of minor salivary gland lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland lesions are routinely evaluated by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) preoperatively. The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) has standardized salivary gland FNAC reporting. Its application in major salivary glands (MSGs) has been well-established; however, its utility in minor salivary glands (MiSGs) is not well-known. We studied the utility of MSRSGC in MiSG FNAC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective search of MiSG FNACs from 2 academic institutions (2006-2023) was performed. FNACs were classified using the MSRSGC. Histologic d

Reconstruction techniques using free jejunal transfer for total pharyngolaryngectomy with total glossectomy.

BACKGROUND: Total pharyngolaryngectomy is sometimes combined with total glossectomy for advanced hypopharyngeal or cervical esophageal cancers involving the tongue base. The optimal reconstruction method for total pharyngolaryngectomy with total glossectomy has not been established due to a considerable diameter mismatch between the floor of mouth and the esophageal stump. This report describes two reconstruction methods using free jejunal transfer. METHODS: Five consecutive patients who underwent total pharyngolaryngectomy with total glossectomy were included, with a mean age of 67.0 (range

Topography of the respiratory, oral, and guttural pouch bacterial and fungal microbiotas in horses.

BACKGROUND: The lower respiratory tract microbiota of the horse is different in states of health and disease, but the bacterial and fungal composition of the healthy respiratory tract of the horse has not been studied in detail. HYPOTHESIS: The respiratory tract environment contains distinct niche microbiotas, which decrease in species richness at more distal sampling locations. OBJECTIVE: Characterize the bacterial and fungal microbiotas along the upper and lower respiratory tract of the horse. ANIMALS: Healthy Argentinian Thoroughbred horses (n = 11) from the same client-owned herd. METH

Association between malformation type, location and functional deficits in lymphatic malformations of the head and neck in children.

PURPOSE: Lymphatic malformations (LM) are congenital malformations of the lymphatic system, mainly located in the head and neck area. They can be staged based on location according to de Serres and based on different morbidity items using the Cologne Disease Score (CDS), a clinical staging system. In many cases, functional impairment greatly affects the life of patients suffering from lymphatic malformations. The present study aims to analyze a cohort of pediatric patients with LM. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 144 pediatric patients with head and neck LM was performed. Location, type

Osteoradionecrosis After Mandibulotomy and Marginal Mandibulectomy in Patients With Oral Cancer.

Objectives Osteoradionecrosis is one of the most severe complications in patients with head and neck cancer, which is characterized by persistent exposed and devitalized bone without proper healing after radiation. The extent to which mandibulotomy and marginal mandibulectomy influence the occurrence of osteoradionecrosis remains unclear. This study evaluated the incidence and risk factors for developing osteoradionecrosis of the mandible after oral cancer treatments. Methods A retrospective study was performed to analyze medical records of patients who underwent surgery and postoperative radi

Development and validation of a nomogram to predict occult cervical metastasis in early oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Lack of adequate objectivity and universality, available models are still difficult to be applied to clinical practice in predicting occult cervical metastasis of early oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Taking abnormal metabolic state into consideration, the current model is helpful to distinguish those patients with or without occult cervical metastasis. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed 330 OSCC patients initially diagnosed cT1-2N0M0 stage and received neck dissection from January 2020 to July 2022. The occult cervical metastasis was identified by pathological exam

Spindle cell lipoma of the floor of mouth.

The patient was a man in his 60s with the gradually increasing mass in his mouth. A well-defined, elastic soft mass with a major diameter of 60 mm was found on the right floor of mouth. The magnetic resonance imaging findings showed a well-defined mass with high signal on both T1 and T2-weighted image in the right sublingual space. The mass was slightly heterogeneous inside and had a septum-like appearance. The tumor was resected with care not to damage the capsule. Histopathological findings showed mature adipocytes, spindle-shaped cells, and collagenous components. Spindle cells were CD34-po

The beavertail modified radial forearm free flap: Retrospective review of a versatile technique to increase flap bulk in the head and neck.

OBJECTIVE: Utilization of free tissue transfers in head and neck reconstruction has greatly increased due to their dependability and reliability. Anterolateral thigh (ALT) and rectus abdominus (RA) free flaps may provide too much soft tissue bulk, especially in patients with a large body habitus. A radial forearm free flap (RFFF) may be modified with a "beaver tail" (BT), which provides a flap whose bulk may be tailored to a defect. The purpose of this paper is to describe the technique, how it can be used for a variety of defects and the outcomes of these reconstructions. METHODS: A retrospe

A nomogram for predicting overall survival of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Floor of mouth squamous cell carcinoma (SCCFOM) is a rare but aggressive malignancy with 5-year overall survival (OS) rates below 40% in published studies. However, the clinicopathological predictors of the prognosis of SCCFOM remain undefined. We aimed to establish a model to predict the survival outcomes of SCCFOM. METHODS: We searched the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for patients diagnosed with SCCFOM between 2000 and 2017. Data on patient demographics, treatment modalities, and survival outcomes were retrieved. Risk factors for OS were evaluated

Glomus tumor in the buccal mucosa: A case report and review of the literature.

Glomus tumors are rare benign neoplasms usually occurring in the upper and lower extremities. However, oral cavity involvement is rare, with only a few case reports. We present a 37-year-old male patient with a chief complaint of an exophytic lesion in the left buccal mucosa for one year referred to our center. At the time, he did not have any pain or lymphadenopathy. The patient underwent surgery using a high-power CO2 laser. His histopathological examination revealed a glomus tumor. After 2 years of follow-up, no evidence of recurrence was detected. Glomus tumors should be taken seriously wh

Basal cell adenoma of the floor of the mouth masquerading as ranula- A rare case in an unusual location.

A 65-year-old female patient with a history of wearing a denture for 15 years reported with a complaint of pain in the floor of the mouth. On examination, a swelling measuring about 2.2 X1.2 cms was noted in the floor of the mouth on the left side. The lesion was excised under local anesthesia. Histopathology revealed a cystic lesion with basaloid cells arranged in tubules, nests and cribriform pattern. A diagnosis of basal cell adenoma was made and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. We report a rare case of Basal Cell Adenoma of the floor of the mouth which mimicked a ranula. The predominantl
