The usual treatment for peritonsillar abscess (PTAs) in Japan is antibiotic therapy, drainage and incision followed by tonsillectomy several weeks later. This is a retrospective study of cases treated by immediate tonsillectomy (IT) for PTAs between January 1990 and February 1995 in our hospital. There were 119 cases, 94 male and 25 female, ranging in age from 14 to 76 years (average: 36.6). In all cases, we performed CT scan, which is the most reliable diagnostic method for PTAs. Peritonsillar abscess is an unusual complication following tonsillectomy. A series of five such patients is herein reported. Proper treatment begins with the initial tonsillectomy ensuring complete removal of the tonsils. Should a late peritonsillar abscess following tonsillectomy be found, the patient may be treated with needle aspiration of the affected area plus antibiotics. Removal of the remaining tonsillar tissue and surgical capsule of the tonsil is also advocated.

The role of four oral organisms (Fusobacterium nucleatum. Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) was investigated in 19 children with peritonsillar abscess, and 17 with peritonsillar cellulitis. We studied whether urinary findings are affected by stimulation of tonsils in patients with IgA nephropathy. In 62 patients with IgA nephropathy and 20 patients with other renal diseases tonsils were stimulated by an ultra short wave for 10 min. Changes in amount of urinary protein, urinary sediment, blood leucocyte count, concentrations of serum IgA and serum secretory IgA were evaluated after tonsil stimulation. Gamma delta-T cells in the tonsil were evaluated by flow cytometric analysis and immunohistological study using monoclonal antibodies to the gamma delta-T cell receptor. Chronic tonsillitis (CT) was found in 63.1% of 190 obese children aged 3-15 years, 15% of them had no quinsy in the past. Onset of obesity was attributed to frequent quinsy in 18.3% of the examinees.
