BACKGROUND: Local control, functional outcome, and complications in patients with carcinoma of the base of tongue (BOT) were analyzed to assess the impact of interstitial implant boost with I-125 seeds.
METHODS: Between December 1986 and May 1995, 16 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the BOT received treatment at the William Beaumont Hospital and 4 received treatment at the Northern Virginia Cancer Center. This study describes the purification of a subset of tonsillar B cells which share phenotypic, morphologic and cytochemical features with subepithelial (SE) B cells. Lame pigs, up to 12 weeks of age, were necropsied to establish a diagnosis. Of 175 pigs examined, 165 were confirmed to have arthritis by histopathological examination of joint tissues. Our study focuses on a series of 1344 cases of carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx treated between 1973 and 1992. Brachytherapy was always performed with iridium 192, either alone or in combination with external-beam irradiation or with surgery for the treatment of the primary tumor. Transnasal endoscopy of the pharyngeal orifice of the eustachian tube was performed on 155 ears with otitis media with effusion (77 ears of children, 78 ears of adults). We report here on sleep-associated breathing disorders in morbidly obese children and the effect of adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy on sleep-associated breathing disorders. Adenotonsillectomy is a commonly performed procedure that can greatly change airway pressure in patients with obstructive sleep patterns related to enlarged tonsils and adenoids. A case is presented in which a patient with a rare subclinical form of Williams-Campbell syndrome died after outpatient adenotonsillectomy. This case report illustrates how patients with structural abnormalities of the tracheobronchial tree can be at increased risk for complications when undergoing surgical procedures that impact airway dynamics.
