From 1977 to 1991, we treated 361 carcinomas of the velotonsillar region, either by brachytherapy alone (18 cases), or by an association of external radiotherapy and brachytherapy (343 patients). The latter was performed using a special technique with iridium wires in plastic tubes with afterloading. The primary was the tonsil in 128 patients, the soft palate in 134 patients. A prospective study was undertaken in 40 patients to determine whether suturing of the faucial pillars has any effect in relieving pain and discomfort associated with tonsillectomy. The first 20 patients (5 adults and 15 children) had tonsillectomy without suturing of the faucial pillars. The next 20 patients (3 adults and 17 children) had the anterior and posterior faucial pillars approximated and sutured with 3.0 chromic catgut. A case of giant amyloidoma in the left tonsil with extensive osseous metaplasia and a scanty and patchy monoclonal population of IgG Kappa plasma cells, is presented. Localized tumoral amyloidosis is a rare, benign tumour of the upper aerodigestive tract. Organ-limited amyloidosis has been shown to be confined to various systems but, since the lesion was first described, only four cases situated in the tonsils have been reported in the English literature, and none of these had either osseous metaplasia or a monoclonal population of IgG Kappa plasma cells.

Clinical analyses were performed in groups of patients with several diseases that are regarded as diseases of focus tonsils. These patients underwent tonsillectomy from 1981 to 1993 in our department. They included 289 cases of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP), 35 cases of psoriasis vulgaris (PV), 100 cases of sternocostoclavicular hyperosteosis (SCCH), and 18 cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We report a case of Lemierre syndrome. Although it is seen infrequently, it must be considered in patients with sore throat or dental pain, lateral neck pain, sepsis, and pulmonary symptoms.
