Detailed postmortem examinations were conducted on 30 cattle from a dairy herd with bovine tuberculosis to determine the distribution of lesions in Mycobacterium bovis-infected cattle. Twenty-four different tissue specimens from each animal were examined for gross lesions and collected for bacteriologic culturing and histologic examination. N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant precursor of intracellular glutathione (GSH), usually given in human as a mucolytic agent. In vitro, NAC and GSH have been shown to act on T cells by increasing interleukin (IL) 2 production, synthesis and turnover of IL-2 receptors, proliferation, cytotoxic properties, and resistance to apoptosis. A reproducible method for the estimation of volumes of small tissue samples was needed to allow comparison of the biological activity of tissue explants and to relate symptom improvement to procedures such as adenoidectomy or polypectomy. Holden's apparatus, which utilizes fluid displacement between two chambers, was compared to displacement in a 20 ml syringe. This report describes the characterisation of a polyclonal sheep antiserum against the Ki67 antigen. On western blots, this antiserum recognises a pair of bands of high molecular weight identical with those seen with another polyclonal Ki67 antiserum and the MIB 1 monoclonal antibody. Adherent cells derived from human palatine tonsils were isolated and cultivated. A 45-year-old male with end-stage dilative cardiomyopathy was referred for heart transplantation (HTx). Apart from severe heart disease the patient had an unremarkable medical history. Risk factors were heavy smoking and moderate consumption of alcohol. BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin disease associated with increased IgE synthesis and colonization with Staphylococcus aureus secreting exotoxins, such as Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxin-1 (TSST-1).
OBJECTIVES: In this study, we were interested in determining the in vitro effects of TSST-1 on IgE synthesis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with AD.
METHODS: We stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from AD patients with a wide range of TSST-1 concentrations and measured IgE synthesis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after 14 days.

BACKGROUND: Antiborrelia antibodies in Lyme borreliosis (LB) are mostly detected by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), confirmed by immunoblot (the "two-step system"). In indicated cases, direct evidence of Borrelia burgdorferi is obtained with the PCR method, electron microscopy and cultivation. The "one-step system" of testing for IgM and IgG antibodies in LB is economically preferably, but it requires an EIA kit with more than 90% sensitivity and specificity.
