Risk of post-radiation hypothyroidism among different head and neck cancer subsites and radiation therapy techniques.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism is a common complication in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients after radiotherapy (RT). This study aimed to investigate the risk of hypothyroidism after RT in HNC patients and compare risks among different HNC subsites and RT techniques. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1038 HNC patients treated with RT, categorized into nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and non-NPC groups, then further divided by RT type into volume modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT). Hypothyroidism was defined as increased thyroid-stimulating

Prediction of high-dose regions in the jaw as a basis for decision-making in dental rehabilitation prior to radiotherapy in the head and neck area.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy to the head and neck can lead to severe side effects including xerostomia, caries, and in worst cases to osteoradionecrosis. Dental rehabilitation prior to radiotherapy is strongly recommended to reduce osteoradionecrosis risk, ideally in a dose-dependent manner. However, dentists do not know where high radiation doses are expected and radical tooth extractions continue to be performed. Study aim was to determine the radiation exposure in different dental regions depending on the tumour location to create a decision tree for clinicians. METHODS: The presen

Feasibility and treatment outcomes of simultaneous definitive chemoradiotherapy for elderly patients with synchronous hypopharyngeal and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Hypopharyngeal and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma may occur synchronously; however, optimal treatment strategies, particularly for elderly patients, remain undefined. We evaluated the feasibility and outcomes of simultaneous definitive chemoradiotherapy in this population. This single-institution retrospective study included patients aged ≥65 years who received definitive chemoradiotherapy for synchronous hypopharyngeal and esophageal squamous cell carcinomas between January 2002 and December 2022. Definitive chemoradiotherapy completion rate, objective response, overall survival, progress

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the esophagus with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx: complete response was achieved by chemoradiation therapy.

A 52-year-old male presented with a 3-month history of dysphagia. Laryngological examination showed a left-sided hypopharyngeal tumor, and biopsy of biopsy the tumor revealed moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Computed tomography (CT) and esophagogastroduodenoscopy also revealed a 50 mm mass in the middle thoracic esophagus. Biopsy of the esophageal tumor revealed lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC), characterized by lymphoplasmacytic infiltration and atypical immunohistochemical markers: The infiltrated cells were positive for EMA, partially positive for cytokeratin (CK) AE

Impact of Monofloral Pollen Diets on the Development of Hypopharyngeal Glands and Modulation of Enzymatic, Non-Enzymatic, and Ionic Biomarker Activities in Selected Fat Body Segments and Hemolymph of Apis mellifera Workers.

The homogenization of landscapes and reduction in floral diversity have increasingly led to low diversity in pollen diets for honey bees. In this study, we examined the effects of monofloral pollen diets based on wind-pollinated (Corylus sp., Pinus sp.) and insect-pollinated plants (Brassica napus L., Phacelia sp., Solidago sp., Fagopyrum sp.) on the development of hypopharyngeal glands (HPGs), activities of enzymatic (AST, ALT, ALP, GGTP) and non-enzymatic (urea, uric acid) biomarkers, as well as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus concentrations in the hemolymph and fat bodies from different

Involved nodal versus elective neck radiotherapy (INVERT) for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: a prospective phase II randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Definitive chemoradiotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) carries significant long-term toxicities, with elective neck irradiation (ENI) serving as a major contributor to integral dose and the irradiation of critical organs-at-risk. Involved nodal radiotherapy (INRT) is a novel investigational approach that omits ENI and only treats involved and suspicious lymph nodes, holding the potential to improve short- and long-term morbidity and reduce RT-induced immunosuppression. Although single arm trials have demonstrated a low risk of elective nodal recurrences wit

Does Omitting Distal Anastomosis in Hypopharyngeal Defect Reconstruction Improve Dietary Outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: Circumferential reconstruction is required for total hypopharyngeal defects to restore swallowing. Reconstructive options differ in conduit biology and anastomotic configuration, particularly the presence of a distal alimentary anastomosis. This study compared postoperative complications, dietary recovery, and survival among three reconstructive strategies. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 102 patients who underwent total hypopharyngeal reconstruction between 2015 and 2025 using a free anterolateral thigh (ALT) fasciocutaneous flap (n = 57), gastric pull-up (n = 24

Airway management in critically ill patients with obesity.

Obesity is a global health challenge. An increasing number of patients with obesity are admitted to an intensive care unit. Airway management in these patients represents a unique challenge due to significant anatomical and physiological alterations. Increased adipose tissue in the face, cheeks, pharynx, hypopharynx, and neck narrows the upper airway, renders soft tissues more collapsible, and complicates airway management. In addition, the functional residual capacity is reduced, resulting in markedly shortened safe apnea time, contributing to severe hypoxemia during intubation. Non-invasive

Spatial distribution and prognostic value of tumor-associated macrophages in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

INTRODUCTION: Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) belong to the most frequent immune cells in the tumor microenvironment of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). They can undergo an anti- or pro-tumoral polarization, the latter often referred to as M2-like activation. Because existing data are either not consistent, not well-connected to clinicopathological parameters or lack a detailed spatial distribution, we aimed to get more insight into the relevance of this immune cell population and their activation status. METHODS: This study analyzed the spatial distribution and prognostic

Morphological study on the larvae of different instars of Bodilus gregarius (Coleoptera: Aphodiinae: Aphodiini).

The majority of species in the genus Bodilus (Aphodiinae, Aphodiini) are coprophagous, playing a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness of the natural environment. However, compared with adults, research on the larvae of this group is significantly insufficient. In light of this, the present study focused on the larvae of Bodilus gregarius and used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to provide the first detailed description of the ultrastructural features of larvae at different instars. It was found that the larvae of B. gregarius have three instars. After comparing the ultrastructures of

Effect of Muller maneuver on upper airway characteristics and surrounding structures in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a cone-beam computed tomography study.

The Muller maneuver (MM) collapses the upper airway and mimics apneic events during sleep. This study aimed to assess the effect of MM on the upper airway (UA) and surrounding structures of patients with OSA using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This prospective study of 18 moderate-to-severe OSA patients included two CBCT scans, one during gentle breathing and another while performing MM, with standardized head and neck positioning. UA, soft tissue, and hyoid bone were analyzed using linear, area, and volumetric measurements with OnDemand 3D software version 10.0.1 (1008 measurements).
