Basaloid adenosquamous carcinoma mimicking adenoid cystic carcinoma (BAC MAC): A novel subtype of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has many subtypes, including basaloid (BSCC) and adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC). We describe a surface-derived carcinoma with features of both BSCC and ASC, along with frequent myoepithelial differentiation. Five cases were retrieved, slides were reviewed and results tabulated. DNA- and RNA-sequencing were performed in 4 and 5 cases, respectively. Patients were 4 men and 1 woman, from 55 to 78 years (mean, 68.6). Sites of origin were 2 hypopharynx, 2 oral cavity and 1 oropharynx. All cases demonstrated basaloid morphology and duct formation. Squamous

Clinically Suspected Fungal Laryngitis Masquerading as Laryngeal Carcinoma in a High-Risk Patient.

Fungal laryngitis is an uncommon clinical entity that may radiographically and symptomatically mimic laryngeal malignancy, posing diagnostic challenges. We present the case of a 62-year-old male with a 40-pack-year smoking history, inhaled corticosteroid use, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hepatitis C, and substance and alcohol abuse who presented with progressive hoarseness, sore throat, and dyspnea. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a laryngeal mass causing supraglottic airway narrowing, initially suggestive of carcinoma. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy demonstrated extensive white patches of the

Current status and future perspectives of treatment de-escalation in localized head and neck cancer.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) often requires invasive multimodal therapy, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Although these interventions have improved treatment outcomes, patients frequently experience long-term functional impairment and treatment-related morbidity. Consequently, clinical research has shifted toward treatment de-escalation, a paradigm aimed at preserving quality of life while maintaining oncologic control. This review summarizes the current evidence from prospective clinical trials on de-escalation strategies for HNSCC of the oropharynx, hypoph

Airway Morphometric Changes Following Prefabricated Myofunctional Appliance in Class II Division 1 Patients: A Clinical Evaluation.

Prefabricated myofunctional appliances (PMAs) are designed to improve airway function by advancing the mandible, enhancing tongue posture, and reducing airway resistance, thereby facilitating nasal breathing in children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). This retrospective study evaluated the effects of PMAs on airway dimensions in children with skeletal Class II division 1 malocclusion. Patients were selected from a departmental database (2017-2019). The treatment group included children with Class II division 1 malocclusion, an incisor overjet of ≥6 mm, cervical vertebral maturation (CVM

Blood Manganese and Risk of Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Head and Neck.

IMPORTANCE: Squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity (OCSCC), oropharynx (OPSCC), hypopharynx (HPSCC), and larynx (LSCC) are the most common forms of head and neck cancer globally. Epidemiological studies have identified variations in blood trace metal concentrations as potential risk factors for the development of these cancers, but these studies are susceptible to multiple biases. OBJECTIVE: To determine if variations in genetically predicted blood manganese are associated with risk of OCSCC, OPSCC, HPSCC, and LSCC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based 2-sample cis-m

Hypopharyngeal Venous Malformation Mimicking Malignancy: A Case Report.

Hypopharyngeal venous malformations are rare and may mimic malignancy on imaging, creating diagnostic and management challenges, particularly when tissue diagnosis is required. A 61-year-old woman presented with progressive dysphagia and odynophagia. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the neck demonstrated an enhancing lesion involving the left tongue base, aryepiglottic fold, and hypopharynx, with associated coarse calcifications, raising concern for neoplasia. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a compressible, purplish, vascular-appearing lesion. The patient underwent direct laryngosc

The value of dual-layer detector spectral CT multiparameter imaging in distinguishing between benign lesions and carcinomas of the larynx and hypopharynx.

BACKGROUND: Accurately distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions in the larynx and hypopharynx is crucial for formulating individualized and precise treatment plans. Due to the low soft-tissue resolution of conventional computed tomography (CT), the diagnostic accuracy of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal lesions is not satisfactory in clinical practice. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the value of dual-layer detector spectral computed tomography (DLSCT) multiparameter imaging for distinguishing between laryngeal and hypopharyngeal benign lesions (LHBLs) and laryngeal and hypopharyn

Early local recurrence of well-differentiated liposarcoma of the hypopharynx in a young adult: a case report and literature review.

Well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS), also termed atypical lipomatous tumor, is a low-grade malignant adipocytic neoplasm characterized by indolent growth, limited metastatic potential, and a propensity for local recurrence. Primary WDLPS arising in the hypopharyngeal region is exceptionally rare, particularly in young adults, and may clinically mimic benign submucosal lesions. We report the case of a 24-year-old man who presented with a one-month history of persistent foreign body sensation in the throat. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a smooth submucosal mass arising from the left hypopha

Pressure and Timing Differences Between Volitional and Non-Cued Saliva Swallows Measured with Pharyngeal High-Resolution Manometry.

Volitional and spontaneous swallowing occur regularly throughout the day, yet most research has primarily focused on cued volitional swallowing. Differences in sensory input and degree of cortical involvement between swallow types may contribute to differences in swallowing physiology. Pharyngeal high-resolution manometry provides an opportunity to characterize both swallow types. Pressure generation and timing events during cued volitional (2 cc thin liquid) and non-cued saliva swallowing were evaluated in 50 healthy adults (n = 25 per sex). Paired t-tests revealed that on average, significan
