Bone morphogenetic protein-2 and transforming growth factor-β1 regulate cell proliferation and ectopic claudin-4 expression in parotid acinar cells.

OBJECTIVES: Salivary gland secretory function is impaired by tissue injury, but subsequently recovers if the damage is not severe. We previously reported that tissue injury can cause secretory granule loss and ectopic expression of claudins and stem cell markers including nestin in parotid acinar cells. Such alterations may indicate acinar cell dedifferentiation contributing to cell survival. We investigated transforming growth factor (TGF)-β superfamily member expression profiles and functions to identify tissue injury responsive signals. METHODS: Acinar cells were isolated from the rat paro

Ameliorative effects of melatonin on radiotherapy-induced apoptotic and inflammatory responses in rat parotid gland.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy-induced parotid gland injury is a major contributor to salivary hypofunction and xerostomia in head-and-neck cancer management. This study aimed to evaluate the differential radiobiological effects of flattening filter (FF) and flattening filter-free (FFF) 6 MV photon beams, delivered as single-dose or fractionated-dose regimens, on apoptotic, inflammatory, and angiogenic gene expression in rat parotid tissue, and to assess the potential radioprotective action of melatonin. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (8-10 weeks old) were randomized into ten groups and irradi

Facial landmark-based localization of the parotid duct: a cadaveric study with ultrasonographic feasibility assessment.

The parotid duct (Stensen’s duct) runs superficially across the midface and is often encountered during aesthetic or surgical procedures. Accurate knowledge of its spatial orientation is essential to avoid iatrogenic injury. This study aimed to define the spatial course of the parotid duct relative to facial surface landmarks to demonstrate the feasibility of ultrasonographic identification of these relationships in vivo. Thirty-two hemifaces from sixteen adult cadavers (15 Korean, 1 Caucasian; 9 males, 7 females; mean age 82 years) were dissected to trace the parotid duct from the gland to it

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland: A rare case with diagnostic challenges.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland represents an exceedingly uncommon salivary malignancy, characterized by highly aggressive behavior and a generally poor prognosis. We report the case of a 52-year-old male with no significant medical or surgical history presented with a 7-month history of a progressively enlarging right parotid mass, recently complicated by ipsilateral facial nerve paralysis and masticatory dysfunction. Cross-sectional imaging revealed a large necrotic parotid-origin tumor with extension into the masticator, pharyngeal, and parapharyngeal spaces, associated

Assessing PSMA Receptor Availability Using 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT Following 177Lu-PSMA-617 Therapy Administration.

PURPOSE: Prostate cancer treatment with 177Lu-PSMA-617 depends on specific binding to the PSMA protein. If receptors become saturated by the radioligand, the uptake of the drug may be affected. Our goal was to measure the pharmacological effect of standard 7.4 GBq (200 mCi) administration of 177Lu-PSMA-617 based on the uptake of 68Ga-PSMA-11 on subsequent PET. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT within 0.5-75 hours after cycle 1 of therapy administration in 6 patients with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer who volunteered for imaging. SUVmean of tumors (N=27) an

Field-testing the MALT-IPI in a single-center real-world cohort of patients with extranodal marginal zone lymphoma.

The mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-International Prognostic Index (IPI) is widely applied to estimate outcomes in patients with extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL) of MALT. Although it was developed in the context of the IELSG-19 trial exclusively in patients treated with chlorambucil, rituximab, or their combination, it is commonly used across virtually all disease settings. However, its applicability beyond contexts resembling the IELSG-19 trial remains debated, and several studies have proposed modifications to improve prognostic precision in EMZL. Here, we retrospectively a

Primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

Primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland (PMMPG) is an exceptionally rare neoplasm, comprising less than 0.7% of all parotid malignancies and often mistaken for metastatic melanoma. This case presents a 66-year-old man with a painless, slowly enlarging right parotid mass. Imaging revealed a lesion localized to the superficial parotid lobe with FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose)-avid level II lymph nodes. Fine-needle aspiration suggested melanoma, confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The patient underwent total parotidectomy, neck dissection, adjuvant radiotherapy and immunotherapy with pembrolizuma

Parapharyngeal parotid pleomorphic adenoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors are uncommon, accounting for 0.5%-1% of head and neck neoplasms. Diagnosis and treatment of parotid pleomorphic adenomas (PPA) extending to the PPS are difficult because the PPA is situated deep in the tissue. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman presented with a sore throat, odynophagia, and foreign body sensation in the throat for 6 weeks. Physical examination revealed a bulge in the oropharynx. Imaging revealed a clearly demarcated lesion in the right PPS of the neck. PPA diagnosis was confirmed using fine-needle aspiration c

Venolymphatic Malformation Presenting as a Low-Flow Vascular Anomaly: A Case Report.

Venolymphatic malformations (VLMs) are rare congenital disorders involving the vascular and lymphatic systems. They are characterized by altered endothelial differentiation rather than true neoplastic proliferation, with lesion enlargement occurring in response to hormonal or inflammatory stimuli. We report a case of a 15-year-old male who presented with slow-growing swelling over the right parotid region that worsens with trauma, requiring multidisciplinary care. Clinical examinations and imaging findings on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging were suggestive of VLM, a low-flow venous m

Enhanced data usability in dynamic 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET of intracranial tumors using a dynamic head motion correction algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Head motion during dynamic positron emission tomography (dPET) compromises pharmacokinetic modeling, especially in prolonged acquisitions where motion artifacts invalidate quantitative analysis. Although motion correction methods are well-established for static PET, their application in dynamic imaging remains limited. This study evaluates the efficacy of a data-driven dynamic head motion correction (dHMC) algorithm in preserving the reliability of kinetic parameter, using dynamic 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET of intracranial tumors as a challenging model due to the tracer’s inability to cross

Sialocele following excision of delayed-onset inflamed facial fat graft: A case report.

RATIONALE: Autologous fat grafting is a widely used technique for facial contour restoration and is generally considered safe. Nevertheless, delayed inflammatory reactions may occur and, in rare instances, require surgical intervention. Excision of the inflamed graft in the midface region carries a potential risk of intraoperative injury to critical structures, including the facial nerve and parotid gland. PATIENT CONCERNS: 24-year-old woman presented with progressive swelling and tenderness of the left cheek 4 years after autologous facial fat grafting. DIAGNOSIS: Magnetic resonance imaging
