Infections following rattlesnake envenomation and use of antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: There are 7000-8000 venomous snake bites annually in the USA. Antibiotics are commonly administered to bite victims because infection is difficult to differentiate from local tissue injury following envenomation. METHODS: The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center (APDIC) in Tucson oversees antivenom administration for 14 Arizona counties. Records (1999-2021) were searched for antibiotic use and confirmed infections after a rattlesnake bite. RESULTS: There were 4160 calls to APDIC regarding rattlesnakes. After excluding bites to animals, 'dry bites', prisoners and records wit

Co-housing with Tibetan chickens improved the resistance of Arbor Acres chickens to Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis infection by altering their gut microbiota composition.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a global foodborne pathogen that poses a significant threat to human health, with poultry being the primary reservoir host. Therefore, addressing S. Enteritidis infections in poultry is crucial to protect human health and the poultry industry. In this study, we investigated the effect of co-housing Arbor Acres (AA) chickens, a commercial breed susceptible to S. Enteritidis, with Tibetan chickens, a local breed resistant to S. Enteritidis infection, on the resistance of the latter to the pathogen. RESULTS: Ninety-six 1-day

Aptamer-Driven Multifunctional Nanoplatform for Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging and Rapid In Situ Inactivation of Salmonella typhimurium.

Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) is a prominent pathogen responsible for intestinal infections, primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water. This underscores the critical need for precise and biocompatible technologies enabling early detection and intervention of bacterial colonization in vivo. Herein, a multifunctional nanoplatform (IR808-Au@ZIF-90-Apt) was designed, utilizing an S. typhimurium-specific aptamer to initiate cascade responses triggered by intracellular ATP and GSH. The nanoplatform precisely targets S. typhimuriumvia aptamer recognition, promoting bacterial

Metagenomics: a new frontier for routine pathology testing of gastrointestinal pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and comprehensive identification of enteropathogens, causing infectious gastroenteritis, is essential for optimal patient treatment and effective isolation processes in health care systems. Traditional diagnostic techniques are well established and optimised in low-cost formats. However, thorough testing for a wider range of causal agents is time consuming and remains limited to a subset of pathogenic organisms. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) allows the identification of all pathogens in a sample in a single test, without a reliance on culture or introductio

Refractory Salmonella infection resulting in nephrectomy.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections, though commonly associated with gastroenteritis, can demonstrate focal non-gastrointestinal organ involvement. We present the case of a mid-30s woman who presented with long-standing left flank pain and was subsequently diagnosed with refractory Salmonella pyelonephritis in the setting of nephrolithiasis, severe hydronephrosis and parenchymal thinning suggestive of renal atrophy despite normal serum creatinine and a normal appearing contralateral kidney. Despite several guideline-based antibiotic courses, we failed to clear her multidrug-resistant Sal

Bayesian phylogeographic analysis infers cross-border transmission dynamics of drug-resistant Salmonella Enteritidis.

UNLABELLED: Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) stands as a leading cause of human salmonellosis worldwide with a tendency to spread through contaminated foodstuffs and animals. In Hong Kong, a significant proportion of food products are imported, and many cases are often caused by the consumption of contaminated food, hence making the geographical surveillance of drug-resistant S. Enteritidis important for strong public health and food safety measures. We analyzed the whole genomes of 207 S. Enteritidis from Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, mainland China, the United States of America, South

Opportunistic pathogens are prevalent across the culturable exogenous and endogenous microbiota of stable flies captured at a dairy facility.

Stable flies in the genus Stomoxys are highly abundant, blood-feeding pests on dairy farms; however, their role in the carriage and potential transmission of pathogens is largely understudied. Here, we report on the frequency and distribution of culturable bacteria collected from Stomoxys flies captured in free stall barns and nearby calf hutches over a three-month period on a focal research farm in Wisconsin, USA. Mastitis-associated bacterial taxa, including Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Enterobacter, and Klebsiella spp., were frequently isolated from pooled samples of the internal or externa

Effects of bcsE, luxS and rfaG genes on the physiology and pathogenicity of Salmonella Typhimurium.

In this study, rfaG, luxS, and bcsE gene mutants of S. Typhimurium ATCC 14028 wild-type strain were generated, and their effects on bacterial physiology and pathogenicity were investigated. Biofilm production capacity and mobility of mutant strains were found to be significantly reduced. Immune response stimulation of 6-8 week-old BALB/c mice infected with wild-type and mutants was evaluated on days 0 and 21 for IL-6, IFN-γ, and IgG, and then systemic infection in mice was determined by the amount of Salmonella recovered from the cecum, spleen, and liver organs. The specific IgG antibody level

An outbreak of Salmonella Muenchen gastroenteritis after consuming wild hunted kangaroo, Northern Territory, Australia, 2024.

An outbreak of salmonellosis occurred in August 2024 after consuming wild hunted kangaroo in a remote area of the Northern Territory (NT), Australia. We conducted an outbreak investigation via telephone and face-to-face interviews, using a standardised questionnaire that recorded symptoms and exposures to foods and activities prior to onset of symptoms. A confirmed outbreak case was defined as anyone with laboratory confirmed Salmonella Muenchen infection who was part of a group of people who shared meals on 25-26 August 2024. A probable outbreak case was defined as anyone who was part of a gr

Evaluation of Moore and grab sampling method for Salmonella Typhi detection in environmental samples in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever causes substantial mortality and morbidity in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) as a result of inadequate water, hygiene, and sanitation facilities. The gold standard for typhoid diagnosis is blood culture, however this method is expensive and mostly unavailable in LMICs. Environmental surveillance (ES) could offer a low cost alternative to identify circulation of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S.Typhi) and help inform public health interventions including vaccination. METHODS: We implemented standardized protocols for ES at 40 validated sites in peri-urban

Avian-specific Salmonella transition to endemicity is accompanied by localized resistome and mobilome interaction.

Bacterial regional demonstration after global dissemination is an essential pathway for selecting distinct finesses. However, the evolution of the resistome during the transition to endemicity remains unaddressed. Using the most comprehensive whole-genome sequencing dataset of Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (S. Gallinarum) collected from 15 countries, including 45 newly recovered samples from two related local regions, we established the relationship among avian-specific pathogen genetic profiles and localization patterns. Initially, we revealed the international transmission and evolu
