Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a facultative anaerobe Gram-positive bacillus, which is considered a zoonotic pathogen. E. rhusiopathiae causes erysipeloid, mainly in occupational groups such as veterinarians, slaughterhouse workers, farmers, and fishermen. Two cutaneous forms (localised and generalised) and a septicaemic form have been described. Here, we report the isolation of a strain of E. rhusiopathiae from a 56-year-old immunocompetent obese male admitted to Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo Pavia (Italy). Blood cultures were collected and Gram-positive bacilli were observed. E. r

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is a neglected tropical disease caused by Leishmania (L.) major. This zoonosis is characterized by a broad-spectrum clinical polymorphism and may be underestimated and poorly treated since it is a simulator of various dermatoses. The aim of our study was to analyze the clinical polymorphism of patients with ZCL. A total of 142 patients with confirmed CL based on the microscopic examination of skin lesion biopsies were included in this study. Molecular typing of Leishmania species revealed that all patients were infected with L. major. In total, 14 clinica

parts of the world (1,2). CL is characterized by significant clinical variability. An ulcerated nodule on the exposed parts of the body (corresponding to the parasite inoculation site by the vector insect) is the classic presentation. However, other forms of clinical presentations also exist (3,4). CL can be present on unusual locations such as the scalp, the genital region, or palmoplantar areas. Localization in the foot poses a diagnostic challenge due to similarity to disorders which produce ulcerations. The latter include diabetes and leprosy. A 75-year-old Afghani man presented with a lar

Various clinical forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis can be encountered such as: ulcerated, lupoïd, sporotrichoïd and other rare forms (eczematiform, erysipeloid, psoriasiform, verrucous, and pseudotumoral). We report an atypical presentation of verrucous and pseudotumoral cutaneous leishmaniasis that resolved following a course of cryotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis (OWCL) is endemic in Iran and most cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) are caused by Leishmania major, and then Leishmania tropica, and rarely by Leishmania infantum.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe clinical variants of OWCL and their treatments.
METHOD: Through literature search in PubMed, Scopus and Embase and google scholar, we have found articles about variant clinical pictures of OWCL and their treatments.
RESULTS: The following clinical variants of OWCL namely; localized forms, zosteriform, erysipeloid, eczematoid, warty, localized Leish

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is based on the microscopic detection of amastigote, isolation of the parasite, or the detection of Leishmania DNA. Nevertheless, since these techniques are time consuming and not usually available in many endemic countries, the diagnosis remains clinical. Consequently, such disease may be overlooked because of its similarity to other skin diseases. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical polymorphism of CL caused by Leishmaniamajor.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out on 166 patients. Diagnoses were made b

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is associated with a broad and complex clinical spectrum of diseases. The objectives of this study were to assess the clinical features and identification of the causative agents of CL in a well-known focus of anthroponotic CL (ACL) caused by Leishmania tropica, southeast Iran.
METHODS: This study was performed randomly as a descriptive cross-sectional survey to evaluate 2000 CL patients by active and passive case-detection approaches in Kerman Province from 1994 to 2014. The ACL patients were confirmed by direct smear and 600 cases by one or a combina

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to Leishmania major (L. major) is common in the Middle East; however, this skin infection may be under-diagnosed when it presents atypically.
OBJECTIVE: To highlight the occurrence of uncommon presentations of CL that may elude diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed among patients who presented at The Sheba Medical Center between 2005 and 2014 with atypical clinical presentations of CL due to L. major.
RESULTS: Twelve patients with unusual clinical presentations of L. major CL were identified. All infections were ac

Erysipeloid, a cutaneous infection with the gram-positive bacillus Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, is typically an occupational dermatosis seen in persons working with livestock or involved in commercial fishing (fishmongers). Other more-generalized forms of infection with this organism also exist, including a septic form usually associated with endocarditis. Many infections may be self-limited. They have rarely been reported in children or in immunocompromised patients. This microbe is sensitive to many mainstream antibiotic agents.

Through its anatomical, topographical, and functional distinctiveness, more than all other parts of the body, the hand is the interface between humans and their environment. All types of stimulus produce cutaneous signs in the hands, notably cold, light, pressure, contact, etc. Exposure to light makes it the region where photodermatosis is expressed, but also a particular site for cutaneous carcinogenesis. The countless chemical substances that the hand encounters can create specific or particular diseases in this location (irritative dermitis, contact eczema, hyperkeratosis, atrophy, etc.). T

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a facultative, non-spore-forming, non-acid-fast, small, Gram-positive bacillus. The organism was first established as a human pathogen late in the nineteenth century. Three forms of human disease have been recognised since then. These include a localised cutaneous lesion form, erysipeloid, a generalised cutaneous form and a septicaemic form often associated with endocarditis. The organism is ubiquitous and able to persist for a long period of time in the environment, including marine locations. It is a pathogen or a commensal in a wide variety of wild and domest

The cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an affection which is quite well known in Tunisia. The zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major by far the more frequent, is endemo-epidemic in the centre and south of the country. It is characterized by clinical polymorphism. The aim of our study is to precise the different clinical aspects of the CL in our region through a prospective study of 102 cases. The average age was 37.8 years old (from 4 to 78 years old) with a slight female predominance. All of our cases lived or stayed in an endemic zone. Various clinical forms were noted in o

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae has been recognised as a cause of infection in animals and man since the late 1880s. It is the aetiological agent of swine erysipelas, and also causes economically important diseases in turkeys, chickens, ducks and emus, and other farmed animals such as sheep. The organism has the ability to persist for long periods in the environment and survive in marine locations. Infection in man is occupationally related, occurring principally as a result of contact with animals, their products or wastes. Human infection can take one of three forms: a mild cutaneous infection
