OBJECTIVE: To analyze the CT and MRI features of Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) in nasal and paranasal sinuses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CT and MRI images of 23 patients with RDD were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: The 23 patients included 10 men and 13 women, with a mean age of 43.4 years. Among the 23 cases, only 3 cases (13.0%) had unilateral lesions, and 20 cases (87.0%) had lesions involving bilateral nasal and/or paranasal sinuses. In some patients, the lesions were limited to the nasal and paranasal sinuses (8 cases), while in some patients, the lesions invaded the surrounding tiss

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a clinically important opportunistic pathogen in otorhinolaryngology, where chronic inflammation, impaired drainage, postoperative wounds, and device-associated biofilms may complicate treatment. Specialty-specific data linking anatomical distribution, multidrug resistance (MDR), and clinical outcomes remain limited in regional hospitals in China.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of P. aeruginosa infections in otorhinolaryngology and to identify factors associated with MDR.
METHODS: This single-cen

A variety of malignancies can be found in the sinonasal tract including the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and skull base. Many of these are attributed to viruses, for example, carcinomas with the presence of transcriptionally active high-risk human papillomavirus, as well as Epstein-Barr virus associated malignant lymphoepithelial carcinoma and haematolymphoid neoplasias. Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignant tumor of the olfactory fossa with an unknown etiology. We present the first comprehensive virus study of ONB. By targeted next-generation sequencing for 41 DNA viruses, we

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is a rare malignancy of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, with highly aggressive behaviour. Although a multimodal strategy is considered the standard treatment approach, recurrence remains common both locally and at distant metastatic sites. Temporal bone metastases represent a rare entity, with patients primarily manifesting otologic symptoms. Breast, lung, and prostate cancers are the most common primary malignancies associated with temporal bone metastases, whereas no cases originating from the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder characterized by complex immune-mediated mechanisms and broad organ involvement that remains substantially underdiagnosed in clinical practice. The head and neck region is one of the most commonly involved anatomical domains, encompassing the major salivary glands, lacrimal glands, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, larynx and subglottis, thyroid gland, middle ear, orbit, and cervical lymph nodes. This review integrates current understanding of the immunopathological mechanisms underlying IgG4-RD with organ-specific clini

The ectodermally derived mucosa of the nose and paranasal sinuses may give rise to three morphologically different papillomas referred to individually as exophytic papilloma, inverted papilloma (IP) and oncocytic sinonasal papilloma (OSP). OSP is the rarest of the three different types, frequently affects the maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus and nasal cavity while sphenoidal sinus involvement is exceedingly rare. The tumour has no gender predilection and has a wide age range with the majority above 50 years of age. Clinically, its behaviour parallels IP due to local recurrence and tendency to ma

Although it is a relatively common occurrence in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal region, and on the skin, fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) is extremely rare in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. Today, FEP is considered an atypical form of hamartoma. Here, we report the first case in the international literature of a 45-year-old male patient in whom FEP arose from the middle turbinate. The diagnosis of FEP was established after a detailed clinical, pathohistological, and immunohistochemical analysis. We also performed a literature review of English-language literature, in

BACKGROUND: Dialister pneumosintes(D. pneumosintes) is a slow-growing, obligate anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus commonly found in the oral cavity, nasopharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and vaginal microbiota. Although typically associated with periodontal disease, D. pneumosintes has rarely been implicated in bloodstream infections and, to date, has not been reported as a causative agent of meningitis. This case report describes D. pneumosintes bacteremia complicated by meningitis, highlighting the diagnostic challenges associated with fastidious anaerobes and the role of advanced microbiologi

DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinoma is a recently recognized entity characterized by a non-viral-related non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma with chromosomal rearrangement between DEK on 6p22.3 and AFF2 on Xq28. This neoplasm is associated with an aggressive clinical behavior, particularly regarding local recurrences and distant metastases even with its deceptively bland histomorphology. In this article, we report on 2 patients with DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinomas, which were only diagnosed at the time of recurrence. Patient #1 was originally misdiagnosed with inverted papilloma. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate predictive impact of granular subsites of head/neck rhabdomyosarcoma in a cross-age evaluation of the population-based SEER-program.
DESIGN: Data were obtained for cases 0-90+ years, newly diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma at head/neck, registered in SEER17 2000-2020. Disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) were the endpoints, using the Kaplan-Meier estimator and Cox proportional hazards regression model. A granular site categorization was established.
RESULTS: Median age of 1114 cases was 11 years. 5-year OS and DSS were 59.1 %±3.1 (95 %CI) and 62.4 %±

Ascaris lumbricoides, a prevalent nematode affecting humans, frequently infests the gastrointestinal tract but can also be seen in atypical locations such as the middle ear, nose, epiglottis, and maxillary sinuses. Herein, we present the case of a three-year-old baby girl from a rural background, managed at the Department of ENT, Chaudhary Mohammad Akram Teaching& Research Hospital, Lahore. She presented with 15-day history of unilateral nasal blockage and repugnant nasal discharge from the right nostril. A general physical examination showed a vague firm to hard swelling along the right later

Background: Cholesteatoma, characterized by the abnormal growth of keratinizing squamous epithelium in ectopic locations, most commonly arises in the middle ear. Its occurrence in the sinonasal tract is rare and presents significant diagnostic and management challenges. These lesions can lead to severe complications like bone erosion, intracranial involvement, and orbital spread. This narrative review aims to summarize the current knowledge on cholesteatomas in these regions, focusing on epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Methods: A comprehensive review of the English lit

Background: Hospital-based data can complement registry estimates for cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) oncology, particularly in under-reported regions. We aimed to describe the institutional case-mix of CMF tumor diagnoses, standardized to ICD-10 sites, and to quantify trends using visit-normalized indicators. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational, single-center, hospital-based study of diagnosis-level encounters (2012-2016). Diagnoses were recoded to ICD-10 and restricted to CMF sites (lip, oral cavity, major salivary glands, oropharynx/hypopharynx, nasal cavity/middle ear, paranasa

Neuroendocrine tumors are rare and highly heterogeneous neoplasms with a wide spectrum of histological differentiation, functional, and biological features. Small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (SNECs) of the sinonasal tract are particularly rare. Pathological features of SNECs of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, which are aggressive tumors, are similar to those of anaplastic small cell carcinomas of the lung. We present a case of high-grade sinonasal SNECs in a patient with Xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group C (XPC) gene-positive xeroderma, which, to our knowledge, is the firs

A man in his 60s presented with diminution of vision of the left eye with nasal bleeding after accidental fall. On examination his left upper eyelid was lacerated and left temporal sclera was punctured which was repaired under local anaesthesia after which he was discharged by ophthalmologists but continued to complain of pain and left nasal obstruction. A non-contrast CT of paranasal sinuses revealed fracture of medial wall of left orbit, left ethmoid haemosinus and a metallic foreign body (FB) in the septum and anterior face of sphenoid. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy performed to remove the met

BACKGROUND: The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are one of the most frequently anatomically varied regions. Their size and shape vary from person to person, and ethnic origin may have a role in this variety. Recognizing this variations is so important for ear nose throat (ENT) specialists because they predispose to sinonasal pathologies and affect the complication rate and success of endoscopic sinus surgery.
AIM: This study aimed to determine the frequency of sinonasal anatomic variations on paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) in the Turkish population.
METHODS: Patients who had und

UNLABELLED: Optimization of postoperative management of patients after rhinosurgery does not lose its relevance. A significant therapeutic and economic aspect is the rational prescription of systemic antibacterial therapy after conditionally clean operations. This issue is especially acute today, in conditions of the rapid formation of multiresistance in pathogens, the growth of allergic sensitization to medical substance and the comorbidity of patients. The need to have clear criteria for prescribing local and/or systemic antibacterial therapy after surgical interventions in the nasal cavity

BACKGROUND: .-Sinonasal malignancies are rare, aggressive, deadly and challenging tumors to diagnose and treat. Since 2000, age-adjusted incidence rates average less than 1 case per 100,000 per year, male and female combined, in the United States. For the entire cohort, 2000-2017, overall median age-onset was 62.6 years. Carcinoma constitutes over 90% of these upper respiratory cancers and most cases are advanced, more than 72% (regional or distant stage) when the diagnosis is made. Composite mortality at 5 years was 108 excess deaths/1000/year with a mortality ratio of 558%, and 41% of deaths
