The observational clinical registry (cohort design) of the European Reference Network on Rare Adult Solid Cancers: The protocol for the rare head and neck cancers.

INTRODUCTION: Care for head and neck cancers is complex in particular for the rare ones. Knowledge is limited and histological heterogeneity adds complexity to the rarity. There is a wide consensus that to support clinical research on rare cancer, clinical registries should be developed within networks specializing in rare cancers. In the EU, a unique opportunity is provided by the European Reference Networks (ERN). The ERN EURACAN is dedicated to rare adults solid cancers, here we present the protocol of the EURACAN registry on rare head and neck cancers (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT054

Basal Cell Adenoma With Atypia in the Nasal Cavity Mimicking a Malignant Tumor.

Basal cell adenomas (BCA) arising from the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses are very rare. A 64-year-old male patient was suspected of having a malignant tumor after undergoing preoperative computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging. The intraoperative frozen section showed a malignant tumor; however, the final diagnosis revealed BCA with atypia, tubular pattern.

Metastatic Prostate Adenocarcinoma Masquerading as Invasive Fungal Sinusitis.

A 58 year old male with a history of prostate adenocarcinoma presented with diplopia, severe headaches, and eye pain, consistent with sinusitis. Imaging was concerning for invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) and an urgent ENT consultation was requested. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed revealing metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma to the sinuses and anterior cranial fossa. The distinctive imaging features in this case are very useful when considering the divergent management options of IFS and metastatic sinus disease. These entities are likely to be encountered more frequently as immunomodul

Primary Plasmablastic Lymphoma of The Paranasal Sinuses: A Rare Case Report.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and highly invasive type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is usually associated with immunosuppression and human immunodeficiency virus infection. PBL most commonly occurs in the oral cavity, lymph nodes, and in other extranodal sites. However, it rarely originates from bilateral sinuses. Herein, we report the case of a 59-year-old man diagnosed with primary PBL of the sinuses confirmed by endoscopic biopsy, imaging materials, histopathological examination, and immunohistochemistry. The patient underwent 4 cycles of chemotherapy and 22 rounds of radiation th

Analysis of Sinus Inflammation Associated With Maxillary Sinus Fungal Ball Based on CT Imaging.

Background: Paranasal sinus fungal balls usually occur unilaterally, and the maxillary sinus is most commonly involved. However, other sinuses could be concomitantly inflammed, and this phenomenon is rarely discussed. Aims/Objectives: To evaluate the severity of maxillary sinus fungal ball (MSFB) and the occurrence of sinus inflammation in paranasal sinuses according to the image findings and analyze the potential correlations. Material and Methods: A total of 1226 cases of MSFB were divided into 2 groups according to ostiomeatal complex obstruction on computed tomography. The potential correl

Advances in the treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma (Review).

BACKGROUND: Previously free of rabies, Bali experienced an outbreak in 2008, which has since caused a large number of human fatalities. In response, both mass dog culling and vaccination have been implemented. In order to assess potential community-driven interventions for optimizing rabies control, we conducted a study exploring the relationship between dogs, rabies, and the Balinese community. The objectives of this study were to: i) understand the human-dog relationship in Bali; ii) explore local knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) relating to rabies; and iii) assess potential commun

Sinonasal carcinosarcoma with cartilaginous and rhabdomyoblastic components: A previously undescribed entity.

Carcinosarcomas are rare, aggressive tumors seldom found in the sinonasal region. They classically consist of sarcomatous spindle cell and carcinomatous squamous cell elements. A 61-year-old woman presented reporting right-sided nasal discharge and obstruction. Examination demonstrated a large right-sided nasal mass, from which a biopsy was taken. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass arising from the maxillary antrum and extending into the nasal cavity, ethmoid air cells, and frontal sinus. Right total maxillectomy with resection of the nasal tumour component was

Fenestration is a logical and effective treatment for a large primordial cyst with cholesterol granuloma: a case report.

A cholesterol granuloma (CG) is characterized by the presence of cholesterol crystals that cause a chronic granulomatous reaction in an enclosed space. It occurs most commonly in the head and neck region, particularly in the middle ear. Although CGs in the maxilla have also been reported, odontogenic cysts in conjunction with CGs in the maxilla are very rare. We herein present a case of a 72-year-old man who developed a large primordial cyst with a maxillary CG that extended into the maxillary sinus, nasal cavity, and infraorbital region, causing left-sided facial swelling and discomfort. We s

Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma: unusual cause of isolated sphenoid sinus lesion.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland tumour of the head and neck region, most commonly seen in parotid glands. These may arise also from minor salivary glands of the upper aerodigestive tract comprises the upper lip, cheek, floor of the mouth and rarely from mucoserous glands in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. A middle-aged man, who had undergone surgery for a nasal mass 14 years ago, presented with headache and visual complaints from a recurrent mass originating from the sphenoid sinus. Isolated sphenoid sinus space-occupying lesions have always been a diagnost

Sinonasal Teratocarcinosarcoma Involving Orbital and Intracranial Extension: A Rare Case Report.

Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma (SNTCS) is one of the rarest and most highly invasive malignant neoplasms often found in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. SNTCS is often misdiagnosed because of its morphological heterogeneity. Due to its rarity, clinical characteristics and optimal therapy have not been well-established. Here, we present a case of SNTCS with orbital and intracranial extensions. A 48-year-old male patient presented with left-side nasal obstruction for 3 years. He appeared with visual and neurological symptoms 2 months ago. On radiographic examination, a mass was observed i

Extent of Nasal Irrigation in Non-operated Sinuses: A Cadaveric Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nasal irrigation is among the most widely used treatment modalities for sinonasal diseases. The extent of irrigation is well studied in operated sinuses but not for non-operated sinuses. Moreover, the preferred head positioning during irrigation is not known. Herein, we studied the extent of nasal irrigation in cadaveric heads with non-operated sinuses. METHODS: Nine cadaveric heads were used. Normal saline solution mixed with radiological contrast material was used to irrigate the nasal cavities with the heads in 2 different positions: standing-leaning-forward (SLF) and Head-down

Endoscopic removal of ectopic dentition in ethmoid sinus.

A 66-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of unilateral right nasal obstruction and rhinorrhoea not responding to medical therapy. She had a history of dental implantation for an unerupted tooth on the right side 3 years ago. Physical examination including flexible nasendoscopy demonstrated yellow debris in the right middle meatus. CT paranasal sinuses demonstrated a radiopaque lesion in the right anterior ethmoid sinus and resembled the unerupted tooth. The tooth was removed endoscopically from the right nasal cavity without complications. This case highlights the importance of eli

Nasal Cavity Schwannoma-A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Schwannomas are rare slow-growing benign tumors arising from Schwann cells lining the nerve sheaths. Head and neck schwannomas account for about one-third of all cases, and only 4% of them arise from the sinonasal tract. Its diagnosis is based on histology and immunohistochemistry. Complete surgical excision is the most recommended treatment option, and endoscopic surgery has been widely performed in recent years. In this study, we presented a case of a 55-year-old female with schwannoma arising from the lateral wall of the nasal cavity, causing epistaxis and rhinorrhea. The patient underwent
