Sinonasal quality of life in patients after an endoscopic endonasal surgery of a sellar tumour.

Endoscopic endonasal approach uses the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses to access the cranial base and may be a source of post-surgical morbidity in many patients with a sellar tumour. The objective of the presented study was to evaluate sinonasal quality of life and assess the effect of chosen reconstruction of the cranial base on the final condition. 65 patients, 33 male and 32 female who underwent an endoscopic endonasal surgery due to sellar expansion, were included into this prospective study. Sinonasal quality of life was evaluated using the Sinonasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) question

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma originating from minor salivary gland in the inferior turbinate: A case report and literature review.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor that occurs mainly in the major salivary glands. Cases occurring in the nasal cavity are rarely reported. The patient was a 48-year-old woman with a postoperative pathological diagnosis of EMC. The patient recovered well after surgery. We consulted and summarized all previous cases of nasal EMC. We also discuss the clinical presentation, treatment, and prognosis of EMC of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

Effects of Nasal and Paranasal Sinus Variations on Chronic Otitis Media Development in Pediatric Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic otitis media is an inflammatory disease of the middle ear. The airflow in the nasal passage affects the development of mastoid air cells through the eustachian tube.Nasal and paranasal pathologies and their anatomical variations cause chronic sinonasal inflammation and affect the middle ear mucosa. This study aims to reveal whether the nasal and paranasal sinus variations in pediatric patients are a factor in developing chronic otitis media. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty patients, with unilateral chronic otitis media, who were admitted to the otorhinolaryngology clinic betw

Computed tomography and cross-sectional anatomy of the head in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes).

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a universally widespread wild carnivore in the world. It has an important impact on human interests and plays a vital role in conservation biology. There is no report to describe computed tomography (CT) of the red fox head and its correlation with gross anatomy. Therefore, the intent of the present study was to document, by CT, the basic anatomical structures in the head region of the red fox to lay the groundwork of an appropriate anatomical description of the head structures comparable with traditional dissection technique. Three red fox heads were imaged sagi

Assessment of three types of intranasal nebulization devices in three-dimensional printed models and volunteers: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Intranasal nebulization is an effective treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis; however, terminal inhalation devices have not been fully studied. We compared the sinonasal aerosol distributions and adverse effects of different inhalation units. METHODS: A mask, double-head nozzle, and single-head nozzle were applied to atomize the methylene blue solution to 3-dimensional printed models of the pediatric nasal cavity, adult nasal cavity with septal deviation, and postsurgical paranasal sinuses, and staining of the different sites was scored. Volunteers received n

Leiomyosarcoma of the Nasal Cavity.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) in the sinonasal tract (SNT) is a rarity that has been firstly described in 1958. Since then, there have been only a few articles about this entity. Most of the data available about LMS in the SNT is derived from case reports. We believe that our case will support the data set and help guiding the management of this rare condition. A 84-year-old female presented with nasal airway obstruction on the left side. She experienced several episodes of epistaxis from her left nostril, what made her to seek medical care. A rhinoscopy revealed an obstructing mass in the left nasal c

Positional Installation of Intranasal Corticosteroids in the Treatment of Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVES: First-line treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis includes topical corticosteroids aimed at decreasing inflammation of sinonasal mucosa. No guidelines exist regarding the effect of head position during administration of corticosteroids. We hypothesize certain positions enhance delivery to the paranasal sinuses, with further improvement in delivery after sinus surgery. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using Medline Ovid, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. All studies evaluating intranasal medications administered in 2 or more head positions were includ

Methotrexate-Associated Lymphoproliferative Disorders Mimicking Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis: A Radiological Diagnostic Challenge.

Methotrexate-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (MTX-LPD) frequently involve the extranodal organs throughout the body. Among the extranodal occurrences of MTX-LPD, pulmonary involvement is most frequent. In contrast, there are only a few reports of MTX-LPD in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. Moreover, there are no previous reports of MTX-LPD mimicking granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) in imaging examinations. We describe a case of a 53-year-old woman with MTX-LPD mimicking GPA in the nasal cavity and lungs. She complained of left nasal obstruction and discharge, general fatig

When a stuffy nose won't go away: Rhabdomyosarcoma masquerading as adenoiditis.

Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal proliferation of immature skeletal muscle and may arise in children in the orbit, middle ear, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, or nasopharynx. Clinical diagnosis may be difficult in a subset of patients who have no significant deformities or irregularities upon visual inspection of the oropharynx. Rhabdomyosarcoma in this setting may be mistaken for a more common underlying etiology such as an upper respiratory infection. We report a case of a 7-year-old male with embryonal variant rhabdomyosarcoma previously misdiagnosed by 3 different phy

Prevalence Ratio of Otitis Media with Effusion in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) in adults is less prevalent than in the pediatric population but still causes considerable morbidity. It has been suggested that laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) may have a role in the aetiology of adult OME. Reflux advances to the laryngopharynx and, subsequently, to other regions of the head and neck such as oral cavity, nasopharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and even middle ear with clinical manifestations being asthma, sinusitis, and otitis media. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence ratio of otitis media with effusion in laryngopharynge

Endoscopic Resection of Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma: A Multivariate Retrospective Analysis of Factors Affecting Recurrence and Persistence.

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is the most common benign epithelial tumor in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, with a worldwide incidence between 0.6 and 1.5/100 000 persons per year. However, only a few studies have investigated patient-dependent factors related to IP recurrence and persistence. According to available evidence, these factors are still debated, and results are contradictory. In this multicenter retrospective study, we analyzed the clinical records of 130 patients who were surgically treated for sinonasal IP to evaluate the factors affecting recurrence and persistence

Chronic Rhinosinusitis: Potential Role of Microbial Dysbiosis and Recommendations for Sampling Sites.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory condition that affects up to 12% of the human population in developed countries. Previous studies examining the potential role of the sinus bacterial microbiota within CRS infections have found inconsistent results, possibly because of inconsistencies in sampling strategies. The aim of this study was to determine whether the sinus microbiome is altered in CRS and additionally if the middle meatus is a suitable representative site for sampling the sinus microbiome. Swab samples were collected from 12 healthy controls and 21 CRS patients, including

An Unusual Case of Headache: Isolated Fungus Ball in Concha Bullosa.

A concha bullosa forms when the middle turbinate becomes pneumatized, which is a common anatomic variation; however, fungus ball in concha bullosa is rather rare. An otherwise healthy 52-year-old man presented to our ear, nose and throat clinic with the complaints of midfacial pressure headache and malodorous postnasal drip. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses demonstrated a polypoid hyperdense lesion with slight microcalcifications in the right nasal cavity, accompanied with a complicated fluid collection in the right frontoethmoideal recess seen as hypodensity in contrast to this hy

Renal cell carcinoma metastatic to the sinonasal cavity: A review and report of 8 cases.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastatic in the sinonasal cavity is rare. In many cases, it represents the initial presentation of RCC. We conducted a retrospective chart review to report the clinical presentation, imaging, and treatment of RCC metastases in the sinonasal cavity at two tertiary care referral centers. Our population was made up of 8 patients-6 men and 2 women, aged 55 to 86 years (mean: 66.9; median: 63.5)-who had been diagnosed with cancer in the sinonasal cavity. The most common complaints were epistaxis, nasal obstruction, and diplopia. Cancers were located in the ethmoid sinus
