Rhinolith: Examining the clinical, radiological and surgical features of 23 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Rhinolith is a hard nasal mass formed in time by the mineral salts around an endogenous or exogenous-originating nidus. Rhinolith, which is seen rarely, has been reported in the literature as case reports. In this study, we are presenting the demographic and clinical features together with accompanying sinonasal pathologies of 23 rhinolith cases. METHODS: The medical records and radiological findings of 23 cases, who were operated for rhinolith between January 2010 and June 2018 in Tokat State Hospital, were analyzed retrospectively. The age, gender, the side where rhinolith exists

The clinicopathological spectrum of olfactory neuroblastoma and sinonasal neuroendocrine neoplasms: Refinements in diagnostic criteria and impact of multimodal treatments on survival.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive review of the clinical and histopathological features of olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) and other sinonasal neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), in order to refine diagnostic criteria, analyze treatment outcomes, and identify prognostic factors. METHODS: Data from an Italian multi-institutional database were analyzed. Patients were treated surgically via a minimally-invasive endoscopic approach followed by adjuvant radiotherapy or radiochemotherapy. Neoadjuvant cisplatin/etoposide chemotherapy was administered in cases of poorly-differentiated tumors. A centr

The sinonasal microbiota, neural signaling, and depression in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The complex relationships between the human microbiota, the immune system, and the brain play important roles in both health and disease, and have been of increasing interest in the study of chronic inflammatory mucosal conditions. We hypothesized that the sinonasal microbiota may act as a modifier of interkingdom neural signaling and, subsequently, mental health, in the upper respiratory inflammatory condition chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). In this study we investigated associations between the sinonasal microbiota; local concentrations of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine,

Endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps: Clinical outcome and predictive factors of recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a highly prevalent disease of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, but its exact etiology is still unclear and remains a difficult-to-treat condition. HYPOTHESIS: Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is an effective treatment for medically recalcitrant CRSwNP. There are independent variables that can predict surgical outcomes in patients with CRSwNP. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate ESS efficacy in CRSwNP treatment and to establish prognostic factors for disease recurrence. METHODS: Eighty-five patients with CRSwNP submitted to ESS, and a m

5-HT7 receptors are over-expressed in patients with nasal polyps.

Nasal polyposis (NP) is an inflammatory disease of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. The primary purpose of our study is to determine the expression of 5-HT7 receptors both in nasal polyps and in healthy tissue in the nasal cavity. The subsequent aim is to compare the expression of 5-HT7 receptors in patients with NP and in inferior turbinate tissue (control). The study included 60 participants (40 with NP and 20 controls) aged 35 to 62 years. Nasal polyp samples were collected from all patients and relative 5-HT7 receptor expression analyses were performed. Reverse transcription polymer

Clinical study of extrapulmonary head and neck tuberculosis in an urban setting.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a common inflammatory disorder that strongly impacts patients' quality of life. CRSwNP is still a challenge for ENT specialists due to its unknown pathogenesis, difficult control and frequent relapse. We tested the hypothesis that a new standardised therapeutic approach based on individual clinical-cytological grading (CCG), may improve control of the disease and prevent the needing for surgery. We analysed 204 patients suffering from bilateral CRSwNP, 145 patients of whom regularly assumed therapy, respecting the planned check-up, and were

Canine Staphylococcus pseudintermedius sinonasal infection in human hosts.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a gram-positive bacterium commonly found as part of the normal skin and nasal flora of healthy dogs. It may act as an opportunistic pathogen in dogs, but has also been shown to colonize the nasal mucosa of humans. We report 4 cases of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) refractory to aggressive medical management with cultures that grew S. pseudintermedius, with clinical improvement only after initiating culture-directed therapy. METHODS: Retrospective review of 4 patients with CRS treated at a tertiary academic medical center with sinonasal cultures gr

Clinical findings of extranodal SNT lymphoid malignancies in a four-decade single-centre series.

Sinonasally located lymphoid malignancies are rare lesions with first symptoms similar to other obstructive conditions. Additionally, they often coexist with nasal inflammation and mucosal necrosis. Therefore, time from the first symptoms to diagnosis tends to be long. Awareness and early diagnosis of this disease entity could improve treatment outcome. Altogether, 142 patients with sinonasal or nasopharyngeal (i.e. sinonasal tract, SNT) lymphoid malignancies, diagnosed and treated at the Helsinki University Hospital, during a 39-year period from 1975 to 2013, were retrospectively reviewed. Surgical Treatment of Oroantral Communications.

BACKGROUND: Oroantral communication (OAC) can be defined as a pathologic space created between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity. This communication and subsequent formation of a chronic oroantral fistula is a common complication often encountered by oral and maxillofacial surgeons.Although various techniques have been proposed in published studies, long-term successful closure of oroantral fistulas is still one of the most difficult problems confronting the surgeon working in the oral and maxillofacial region. The decision of which treatment modality to use is influenced by many factors,

Posterior epistaxis: Common bleeding sites and prophylactic electrocoagulation.

Posterior epistaxis is a frequent emergency, and the key to efficient management is identification of the bleeding point. We performed a retrospective study of 318 patients with posterior epistaxis treated with endoscopic bipolar electrocautery during a 4-year period. Distribution of the bleeding sites was recorded. Patients with no definite bleeding sites in the first operation were assigned to Group A (n = 39) and Group B (n = 34). Patients in Group A were only observed in the ward. Patients in Group B were given prophylactic electrocoagulation at the common bleeding points. Of the 318 patie

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the olfactory groove: A report of 4 cases and a review of the literature.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is a rare benign lesion that affects the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. We present 4 cases of REAH that involved the olfactory clefts; 1 case was bilateral. Each of the cases was treated surgically, and no recurrence was observed. Most reports have indicated that REAH occurs in the presence of sinonasal inflammation, particularly nasal polyposis, yet all 4 of our cases occurred in the absence of concurrent rhinosinusitis. This suggests that the etiology of REAH is multifactorial. In addition, we review the literature on REAH, and we disc

Radiographic findings of a well-differentiated sinonasal neuroendocrine neoplasm: Case report and review of the literature.

Typical carcinoid is a rare tumor among other neuroendocrine neoplasms that occur in the nasal cavity. Only a few cases of typical carcinoids in the nasal cavity have been reported. We report a case of typical carcinoid of the nasal cavity in a 61-year-old man who had a history of persistent nasal obstruction and epistaxis for approximately 17 years. Computed tomography revealed a huge, lobulated mass in the nasal cavity with extension into the posterior sphenoid sinus. Extensive bone destruction could be seen in the neighboring sphenoid sinus. MR imaging suggested that the tumor was close to

Endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal transtuberculum sellae extradural approach to suprasellar pituitary lesions: A case report.

Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors that arise within the anterior lobe (the adenohypophysis) of the pituitary gland in the sella turcica. As they grow, they can extend through the pituitary stalk and into the suprasellar compartment. The surgical management of these adenomas via a conventional intradural approach is fraught with a high risk of causing a large cerebrospinal fluid leak. We report a case of pituitary adenoma in a 60-year-old woman whose surgery was performed via a minimally invasive endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal transtuberculum sellae extradural approach.

HDAC inhibitor AR-42 decreases CD44 expression and sensitizes myeloma cells to lenalidomide.

BACKGROUND: Nasal myiasis, an infestation by fly larvae, is a rare condition typically associated with immunocompromised individuals, poor hygiene, and low socioeconomic status. It is commonly seen in tropical regions and is often linked to chronic sinonasal diseases or underlying health conditions. However, cases in healthy individuals without predisposing factors are uncommon, making this case novel and worthy of documentation. The importance of timely diagnosis and effective management in preventing severe complications cannot be overstated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male presented

Concha Bullosa Mucopyocele: a Case Report.

Concha bullosa (CB) is among the most common anatomic variations of sinonasal anatomy. Although usually asymptomatic, CB can occasionally cause nasal obstruction or headache. Obstructions within the mucociliary transport system can develop into a mucocele or mucopyocele. A 48-year-old female, with a history of progressive headache and nasal obstruction, was referred to our department. Paranasal sinus tomography revealed a nasal mass in the left nasal cavity resembling a mucopyocele in the middle turbinate. Under general anesthesia, the purulent material was aspirated, and the lateral part of t

A 3-dimensional transnasal endoscopic journey through the paranasal sinuses and adjacent skull base: a practical and surgery-oriented perspective.

An endoscopic approach through the transnasal corridor is currently the treatment of choice in the management of benign sinonasal tumors, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, and pituitary lesions. Moreover, this approach can be considered a valid option in the management of selected sinonasal malignancies extending to the skull base, midline meningiomas, parasellar lesions such as craniopharyngioma and Rathke cleft cyst, and clival lesions such as chordoma and ecchordosis. Over the past decade, strict cooperation between otorhinolaryngologists and neurosurgeons and acquired surgical skills, together wi

Nasal vestibule schwannoma: report of a rare case.

Schwannomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are quite rare, especially in the nasal vestibule. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman who presented with a 2-month history of progressively worsening right-sided epistaxis and nasal blockage. Rigid nasoendoscopy showed a mobile, smooth, globular mass occupying the right nasal vestibule. The mass arose from the lateral nasal wall and impinged on the anterior part of the middle turbinate posteriorly. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses showed a 3.8 × 1.7-cm enhancing mass in the right nostril. The mass obliterated the nasal ca
