BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis is a rare benign disorder of the upper respiratory tract. It is slow growing and progressive, with characteristic histological appearances.
METHODS: We report the largest single-institution case series of sinonasal eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis to date, comprising nine patients. The current literature is reviewed, showing emerging evidence that this condition may belong to the immunoglobulin G4-related disease spectrum.
RESULTS: The series comprised five female and four male patients, with a mean age at presentation of 53 years. All were tr

Cholesteatoma is a relatively common disease entity within the middle ear cavity, but it is rarely found in the paranasal sinuses. We describe a rare case of cholesteatoma in the maxillary sinus of an elderly man presenting with recurrent sinus infections and nasal obstruction refractory to medical treatment. The patient was treated using functional endoscopic sinus surgery with successful removal of the cholesteatoma. He has no recurrence of the cholesteotoma at a 13year follow-up. We review the literature and history on maxillary cholesteatomas and discuss the theories on the pathogenesis of

OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of a three-dimensional (3D) endoscope for endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery.
METHODS: The study design was a retrospective case series and qualitative research. The clinical efficacy of 3D endoscopes was examined on five cadavers. We performed conventional endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in five cases and hypophysectomy in two cases using a 3D endoscope. The educational advantages of the 3D endoscope were assessed using questionnaires given to the participants of cadaver dissection courses.
RESULTS: In the posterior portion of the nasal cavity, images

A range of disease entities can affect the nasal cavity, often presenting with variable and non-specific symptoms. There is considerable overlap between the clinical and radiological features of neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities. The nasal cavity is often included in routine imaging of the brain, middle ear, skull base, and paranasal sinuses and should be included as a critical review area. The definitive diagnosis is in most cases confirmed by histopathological analysis. However, this review highlights the role of imaging in identifying nasal cavity disease, eliciting features of aggress

BACKGROUND: The outcomes of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) can be compromised by postoperative inflammation, recurrent polyposis, middle turbinate lateralization, and synechiae, often requiring subsequent interventions. A bioabsorbable steroid-eluting sinus implant placed in the operating room following ESS has been proven safe and effective in 2 randomized controlled trials and a subsequent meta-analysis, for its ability to preserve sinus patency, and reduce medical and surgical interventions. This trial sought to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and outcomes

Antrochoanal polyps (ACPs) are benign lesions that originate from the mucosa of the maxillary sinus, and extend into the nasal cavity to reach the choana and nasopharynx. The treatment of ACPs is surgical, with a number of different surgical techniques having been described. We describe the first case series of ACPs from the UK and the endoscopic surgical technique that we have employed. A retrospective case note review of patients with ACPs managed under the care of the senior author was conducted. Demographic and clinical data for all patients were reviewed. The main outcome parameter measur

Meningiomas are benign neoplastic lesions of arachnoidal cells of the meninges. These tumors may arise wherever meninges exists, such as in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, middle ear, and mediastinum. Optic nerve sheath meningiomas (ONSMs) are usually unilateral and occur predominantly in middle-aged females, although they may be present at any age. We present a case of a 55-year-old female with ONSM diagnosed when she was 40 years old. Diagnosis and follow-up was based on the clinical picture, CT orbit scan, and magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To use cross-sectional imaging (helical computed tomography (CT)) combined with conventional anatomical dissection to define the normal anatomy of the nasal cavity and bony cavitations of the koala skull.
METHODS: Helical CT scans of the heads of nine adult animals were obtained using a multislice scanner acquiring thin slices reconstructed in the transverse, sagittal and dorsal planes. Subsequent anatomical dissection permitted confirmation of correct identification and further delineation of bony and air-filled structures visible in axial and multiplanar reformatted CT images.

Inverted papilloma is a benign epithelial tumor of the nasal cavity. It is known to coexist with malignancy in 5 to 13% of cases, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most common malignancy. Another associated malignancy, one that is extremely rare, is verrucous carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, no case of verrucous carcinoma occurring alone or in association with another neoplasm has been described in the nasolacrimal system. We report a case of synchronous verrucous carcinoma and inverted papilloma of the lacrimal sac in a 47-year-old man. The patient presented with epiphora, nasal

The objective of the present work was comprehensive diagnostics of Eustachian tube dysfunction as exemplified by 82 patients with this disorder. The examination using the standard techniques was supplemented by active anterior rhinomanometry, audiometry, and tympanometry. Three-dimensional computed tomography (3D X-ray CT) was used for detailed diagnostics of the state of the nasal structures and paranasal sinuses. The study has demonstrated that 96.3% of the patients with Eustachian tube dysfunction suffer a concomitant pathology of the paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity, and nasopharynx. Diffic

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a heterogeneous inflammatory condition of the sinonasal cavity. CRS may be preceded by other sinonasal inflammatory diseases including allergic rhinitis (AR). It is unclear what factors may predispose patients with AR to develop CRS.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with AR (and not CRS) that presented to an otolaryngology clinic at a tertiary care center as part of a multidisciplinary allergy evaluation between March 2004 and November 2011. Medical records were evaluated for clinicodemographic factors including

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a rather common disease in children, but its symptoms are often subtle and non-specific and this may result in overlooking a correct diagnosis. In turn, a missed diagnosis of CRS prevents a correct management to be performed and is associated with uneffective investigations and improper treatments. Actually, when CRS symptoms, which are mainly nasal congestion and obstruction, nasal discharge, facial pain, cough, and halitosis, are correctly assessed, the clinical diagnosis of CRS may be achieved, and confirmation may be obtained by imaging criteria or nasal fib

Fungi are a major part of the ecosystem. In fact, over 250 fungal species have been reported to produce human infections. More than ever, fungal diseases have emerged as major challenges for physicians and clinical microbiologists. The aim of this study was to summarize the diagnostic procedures and endoscopic surgical treatment of patients with fungal rhinosinusitis. Eleven patients, i.e. 10% of all cases with chronic inflammation of paranasal sinuses, were diagnosed with fungal rhinosinusitis. Ten of them were patients with a noninvasive form, fungus ball, while only one patient was classifi

Chronic sinonasal foreign bodies present unique surgical challenges including tissue integration and anatomic migration. A patient with a history of multiple surgeries for cleft lip, palate, and nasal deformity presented with radiographic findings of a 4.3-cm linear foreign body traversing the nasal cavity and sphenoid sinus. Mucosalization and integration into the sphenoid rostrum were noted at the time of surgery. Endoscopic surgery techniques facilitated removal of the overlying mucosa and encasing bone, allowing successful surgical extraction. On inspection, the foreign body was consistent

Sinonasal fibrosarcoma is an infrequently occurring malignant neoplasm. It usually presents with nasal obstruction and epistaxis, as do other sarcomas in this region. The final diagnosis is based on the histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination. We report a case involving a 47-year-old woman with a 2-year history of left nasal obstruction and proptosis, as well as diplopia for the 2 months preceding her visit. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a neoplasm occupying the left nasal cavity, ethmoid sinuses, and bilateral frontal sinuses. The neoplasm also was erod

Proliferating trichilemmal tumor (PTT) is a rare adnexal neoplasm that arises from the outer sheath of the hair follicle. It is believed that PTTs originate in trichilemmal cysts. These tumors have the potential for malignant transformation; when this occurs, the tumor is known as a malignant PTT (MPTT). Recurrence after simple local excision is common, and it can cause considerable morbidity. We report a case of MPTT that was initially diagnosed as a benign PTT. The primary tumor had arisen from the skin over the glabella. It was excised, but it recurred 3 years postoperatively. The recurrent

When conservative therapies are not effective in treating sinus infections, alternate steps can be taken to improve paranasal cavity ventilation. These measures may include surgical procedures such as intranasal endoscopic or maxillary sinus fenestration, and other procedures such as placement of a maxillary sinus tube or a YAMIK sinus catheter. We conducted a prospective study of 25 patients to investigate the effects on the nasal mucosa of improved ventilation between the nasal and paranasal cavities. We accomplished this by comparing (1) the results of simultaneously measured nasal cavity a
