Chordomas are malignant, nonepithelial neoplasms derived from notochordal tissue. A primary chordoma of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses is extremely rare compared with clival chordomas, which often present as nasal masses after spreading anteriorly. Foreign bodies in the nose and sinuses can cause chronic infections. Long titanium fixtures through the maxilla to the zygomatic bone were followed up with a sinuscope in 14 patients after more than one year. There were no signs of infection or inflammation in the mucosa around the fixtures.

The case of nasopharyngeal rhabdomyosarcoma was presented. 58-years old woman complained of sore throat, dysphagia and temporary hoarseness was treated in Department of Otolaryngology Medical Academy in Warsaw. The nasopharyngeal tumor extended between Rosenmüller's fossa level to base of the tongue, 3x2 cm in size. Because biopsy specimen result was not definite, the tumor was surgical removed wholly. In 1986, the Niigata Registration Committee of Head and Neck Malignant Tumors was established by otolaryngologists in Niigata Prefecture to register cases of head and neck malignancies. Between 1986 and 1999, 4,053 cases were registered and we epidemiologically analyzed them. Men accounted for 2,866 (70.7%) and women for 1,187 (29.3%). The mean age and standard deviation of the age at diagnosis were 63.4 and 12.4 in men and 59.5 and 16.0 in women. We performed endoscopic resection on six patients who had inverted papillomas of the nasal cavity. Disease was completely cleared in four patients after a single procedure, while two others--both of whom had bilateral disease--required repeat surgery. At follow-up, which ranged from 6 months to 5 years, all patients were disease-free. We believe that endoscopic surgery is ideally suited for the treatment of appropriately selected patients who have limited disease and who are likely to adhere conscientiously to a regular follow-up program.

OBJECTIVE: To improve the diagnosis and treatment levels of the chondrosarcoma in nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

Malignant schwannomas of the paranasal sinuses are extremely uncommon tumors, as only 18 well-documented cases have been previously published in the English-language literature. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this work is to evaluate our results in the treatment of the nasal inverted papillomas with an endoscopic approach using a retrospective case series.
METHODS: Between 1993 and 2000 we treated 27 patients with nasal inverted papillomas. All patients underwent endoscopic nasal surgery under general anesthesia. None of the inverted papillomas extended outside of the paranasal sinuses. All tissue samples underwent polymerase chain reaction and hybridization in situ to detect genetic sequences of the human papilloma virus and Epstein Barr virus.

We retrospectively reviewed 35 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma that had originated in the minor salivary glands of the paranasal sinuses or nasal cavity. All patients had been seen at two tertiary-care referral centers in western New York State between 1960 and 2000. Twenty-eight patients with a clinical diagnosis of sinonasal Wegener's granulomatosis were referred for imaging during the period 1990-2001. Of these, 10 had clinical symptoms and signs confined to the nose and sinuses and 18 had classical systemic Wegener's. Fibroendoscopy, otomicroscopy, rhinomanometry, CT of the paranasal sinuses, examination of mucociliary transport in the nasal cavity and ENT microflora, threshold tonal audiometry, impedance audiometry were performed in 20 patients with primary immunodeficiency. The patients were found to have paranasal inflammation, slow mucociliary transport, abnormal nasal breathing, acoustic tube dysfunction, chronic inflammation or exudation in the middle ear, conductive hipoacusis, etc. The findings confirm that ENT are target organs in primary immunodeficiency.
