Influence of Breed on Tracheal Diameter and Endotracheal Tube Size Selection in Dogs: A Retrospective Analysis.

Selecting the correct endotracheal tube (ETT) size is critical for safe anesthesia in dogs. Current ETT size recommendations are largely based on body weight (BW), although some breeds, particularly brachycephalic dogs, may receive smaller ETTs than predicted from BW alone. This two-part retrospective study was performed to evaluate the effect of breed on ETT selection. In Part 1, computed tomography (CT)-measured tracheal diameters (TD) were compared among five small dog breeds weighing 4-5 kg and having a body condition score of 5/9. In Part 2, an expanded clinical cohort of 512 dogs from ei

Clinically adaptable size cartilage grafts generated from human embryonic stem cells enable tracheal repair in a porcine model.

INTRODUCTION: Autologous costal cartilage grafting is commonly used for pediatric tracheal reconstruction; however, it has several limitations, including restricted availability and surgical invasiveness. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of a novel tracheal reconstruction approach using human embryonic stem cell-derived cartilage tissue (ESCaT). METHODS: ESCaT was differentiated from human embryonic stem cells (SEES2), and large-scale cartilage constructs were generated by integrating tissues derived from multiple culture dishes within a nylon mesh scaffold. Decellularized ESCaT

Forensic reconstruction of cause of death in a dismembered and partially burnt body: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Dismemberment and postmortem burning are uncommon forensic challenges that may obscure identification, injury interpretation and determination of cause of death. Systematic anatomical reconstruction and careful examination of dismemberment wounds, vital reaction of tissues and thermal alteration are essential for forensic reconstruction. Toxicological findings must be interpreted according to the substances and analytical categories actually examined. CASE PRESENTATION: Dismembered remains of an adult male were recovered from multiple locations and anatomically reassembled for med

Area-level socioeconomic deprivation and cause-specific survival after lung cancer diagnosis: a population-based cohort study in Naples, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer remains a major public health priority, with survival shaped by clinical, behavioral, socioeconomic, and organizational factors. Socioeconomic disadvantage may affect risk exposure, diagnosis, treatment access, continuity of care, and data completeness. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between area-level socioeconomic deprivation and cause-specific survival in lung cancer and apply the M.A.S.T.E.R. (Methodological Approach for Strategic Transformation, Evaluation, and Redesign) framework to translate epidemiological evidence into organizational design and implement

Identical consensus genomes of bovine coronavirus in respiratory and enteric specimens from a single cow and sequence variation after cell culture passage.

Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) causes respiratory and enteric diseases in cattle, but the relationship between viral genetic variation and anatomical distribution remains unclear. We compared BCoV genomes detected in a tracheal swab and diarrheic intestinal content from the same adult cow. The two clinical specimens had identical 31,015-nt consensus genomes. After five passages in HRT-18 cells, the recovered tracheal isolate differed at three consensus-level amino acid positions (HE N104D, S Q179K, and S E965D) and showed marked within-sample heterogeneity. These findings highlight the importance o

Intubation videoendoscopy in a preterm infant with congenital tracheal stenosis and laryngotracheoesophageal cleft: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of congenital laryngotracheoesophageal cleft and tracheal stenosis is extremely rare. Diagnosis is difficult and many affected neonates die within hours to days. CASE PRESENTATION: A male neonate was delivered at 32 weeks and 5 days of gestation. Birth weight was 1364 g. Severe asphyxia and respiratory failure were apparent soon after birth. Endotracheal intubation was not successful and esophageal intubation did not provide effective ventilation. Flexible intubation videoendoscopy was performed immediately while continuing mask bagging, which identified congenit

When Postextubation Stridor Is Not Edema: Bilateral Lateral Subglottic Mucosal Tears.

Iatrogenic tracheal injury following endotracheal intubation is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. Most reported injuries involve the posterior membranous tracheal wall. We describe a case in which a patient required rapid sequence emergency intubation in the ED and, three days later, following extubation, developed acute stridor and increasing oxygen requirements, found to be secondary to bilateral, inferiorly based lateral mucosal tears of the subglottic larynx and superior trachea with an associated grade 1 subglottic stenosis. This case highlights the importance of maint

Diagnostic yield of endotracheal aspirate and bronchoalveolar lavage in ventilator-associated pneumonia: A single-centre study.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of endotracheal aspirate (ETA) with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) culture, considered the reference standard, in identifying the causative pathogens of VAP. This study was conducted as a cross-sectional study at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, Indonesia. A total of 95 samples from mechanically ventilated patients were analysed using both ETA and BAL in similar institutions. The results demonstrated that 49 samples w

Thyroid and Parathyroid Dysfunction Following Larynx-Trachea-Thyroid-Parathyroid Allotransplantation.

Larynx-trachea-thyroid-parathyroid allotransplantation can restore essential laryngeal functions, but postoperative endocrine changes remain poorly understood. This study assessed thyroid and parathyroid function in four recipients. All developed early thyroid hormone alterations consistent with euthyroid sick syndrome, followed by variable endocrine outcomes. Two experienced thyrotoxicosis associated temporally with graft rejection, while another developed hypothyroidism and elevated parathyroid hormone during late rejection. Transient parathyroid hormone suppression was also observed. In con

Large Carinal Chondrosarcoma: Resection of the Main Carina, Distal Trachea, and Orifices of the Mainstem Bronchi and Construction of a New Carina.

BACKGROUND Chondrosarcoma of the trachea is an extremely rare malignancy, and tumors located at the main carina are even rarer. Carinal resection and subsequent reconstruction of a new carina constitute a demanding surgical procedure that requires extensive expertise and close collaboration between the anesthetic and surgical teams. In this case report, we aim to highlight the rarity of chondrosarcoma of the main carina and emphasize the critical role of surgical intervention despite the complexity of the procedure. Furthermore, we aim to share our clinical experience and contribute an additio

Extremely rare primary tracheal hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Primary tracheal hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is an exceptionally rare, low-grade malignant epithelial tumor. Its nonspecific respiratory manifestations and overlapping histopathological features with other clear cell neoplasms can delay diagnosis. Molecular alterations involving the Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1 (EWSR1) gene are diagnostically valuable; however, the clinicopathological features, optimal management, and long-term outcomes of tracheal HCCC remain insufficiently characterized. We present two cases to expand the limited evidence regarding its diagnosis

Comparison of Two Modified Nasal-Tragus Length Methods for Estimating Orotracheal Tube Depth in Thai Neonates: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Various recommendations have been proposed to estimate the proper orotracheal tube insertion depth (Pro-depth). This study aimed to compare the performance of two modified nasal-tragus length (NTL)-based methods-the NTL-based table (T-method) and a modified NTL-based formula (F-method: NTL + 1 cm for NTL ≤ 6.5 cm and NTL + 0.5 cm for NTL > 6.5 cm)-for estimating Pro-depth in Thai neonates. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, Thai neonates undergoing orotracheal intubation were assigned to either method. Estimated insertion depth was compared with radiographically deter

The application of tubeless anesthesia technique in tracheal tumor resection surgery: a case report.

Systemic hemangioma after neoadjuvant immunotherapy for hypopharyngeal carcinoma is one of the common complications of neoadjuvant immunotherapy. Its pathogenesis may be related to multiple immune regulatory imbalances and vascular biological changes. This case was a locally advanced hypopharyngeal cancer patient who received neoadjuvant immunotherapy and total laryngectomy with partial hypopharyngectomy. During follow-up, a mass was found in the middle part of the trachea, protruding into the tracheal lumen. The peculiarity of this case was that the tracheal mass was located in the middle par
