The clinicopathological pattern of carcinoma of the bronchus at the University College Hospital, Ibadan over a 20-year period, 1971-1990, was studied. An increased incidence of this disease was observed when compared to the study that was carried out in the sixties in the same environment. The reasons for the increase in incidence and the pattern of clinical presentation are discussed. This report presents a mortality study among the 17,344 members of the Construction Workers' Health Insurance Society of Mie Prefecture in Japan. The study period was between 1973 and 1993. During this period, 480 members died. Age-specific mortality rates of Mie Prefecture were used as comparison standards. A cancer mortality study of 8,163 deaths occurring among persons formerly employed as laundering and dry cleaning workers in 28 states is described. Age-adjusted sex-race cause-specific proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) and proportionate cancer mortality ratios (PCMRs) were computed for 1979 through 1990, using the corresponding 28-state mortality as the comparison. PURPOSE: To determine the serial radiographic appearance of the lungs of neonates who underwent partial liquid ventilation with perflubron because of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) or primary pulmonary hypertension.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bedside anteroposterior (AP) and lateral chest radiographs (n = 235) were scored for percentage of lung opacification by perflubron during partial liquid ventilation (PLV) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Five neonates participated in the study; four had CDH, and one had primary pulmonary hypertension.

This study uses the National Mortality Followback Survey of 1986 to identify the top five Sentinel Health Events Occupational [SHE(O)s], the five leading causes of death, and to ascertain the primary occupations and industries associated with these. We found that, as expected, cardiovascular diseases were four of the five leading causes of death overall. The purpose of this study was to investigate alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) reactivity in rabbit airway epithelial cells. Acetone-fixed, methyl benzoate and xylene-cleared (AMeX-treated) paraffin sections of trachea, bronchus, and lung tissue were stained by an azo dye coupling method for ALPase and examined by light microscopy. Silicotics have increased mortality from tuberculosis (TB) and from nonmalignant respiratory diseases (NMRD), including silicosis and silicotuberculosis. Since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer monograph in 1987 indicating that silica was a probable human carcinogen, there has been an extensive debate about the cancer risks among silicotics. The Miron Quarry municipal solid waste landfill site in Montreal, Québec, generates copious quantities of methane and other gases, including a rich mixture of volatile organic compounds, some of which are recognized or suspected human carcinogens. A cohort mortality study was conducted among 9028 (3042 women, 5986 men) workers potentially exposed to chlorinated naphthalenes (chloracnegens structurally similar to dioxins) and asbestos in the manufacture of Navy cable during World War II. We have demonstrated the different distribution of two distinct endothelin (ET) receptor subtypes in porcine pulmonary tissues using a radioligand binding assay. The clear differentiation of the subtypes was made possible by the discovery of two compounds, BQ-123 and [Ala1,3,11,15]ET-1 (4AlaET-1), that are highly selective for ETA and ETB receptors, respectively. In the bronchus and lung parenchyma, BQ-123 inhibited 65% and 30% of [125I]ET-1 binding on the sensitive sites, while 4AlaET-1 displaced 25% and 60%, respectively. Avoidable mortality in Sweden 1974-1985 was analysed using a European Community (EC) Working Group list of 'avoidable death indicators."
