A cohort was established in 1981 of all 7317 white male employees in the amosite and crocidolite mines in South Africa whose names had appeared in the personnel records (initiated between 1945 and 1955) of the major companies. Some of the men had been employed as early as 1925, but only 8% had had more than 10 years of service. Three subcohorts were defined: 3212 men whose only exposure to asbestos was to amosite; 3430 exposed to crocidolite; and 675 to both amphiboles. This paper reports on 70 patients with tumors of the trachea, bronchus and lung treated by reconstruction of the trachea, carina and the main bronchus (21 cases) and sleeve lobectomy (49 cases). Postoperatively, 2 patients died of tracheo-innominate artery fistula and 2 developed empyema which was healed. There was no mortality in the sleeve lobectomy patients. We hereby report a rare case of a mature type teratoma that perforated the lung and combined with aspergilloma in the tumor cyst. A review of the literature and an update that is in progress of a previous retrospective cohort mortality study of the styrene-1,3-butadiene industry are discussed. Dingchuanning has been found to increase markedly the perfusion of isolated lung of guinea-pig. It may produce a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of the isolated trachea, bronchus and lung strips of guinea-pigs, as well as a prominent protective effect on the bronchial asthma induced by inhalation of bronchoconstrictors in conscious guinea-pigs. It also has significant expectorant and antianaphylactic effects and helps to inhibit markedly the SRS-A release from lung tissues and to counteract directly the activity of SRS-A.

This study examined the differences in mortality rate among the three ethnic groups aged 35 to 69: 1) Japanese living in Kawasaki city, 2) Koreans living in Kawasaki city, 3) Koreans living in Korea. This paper examines official published statistics for various causes of death in the United Kingdom between 1970 and 1985. The variables selected were mainly those that had been linked to alcohol or cigarette use. In particular, changes in mortality due to acute myocardial infarction, cancer of trachea, bronchus and lung, cirrhosis of the liver and 'alcoholism' were found to be associated with each other. It is known that 6505 men and 411 women were employed in the mining and milling of crocidolite at Wittenoom in the Pilbara region of Western Australia between 1943 and 1966. Employment was usually brief (median duration four months) and exposure intense (median estimated cumulative exposure 6 fibres/cc years).
