Impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years: A global decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the burden of cancer is increasing. We aimed to assess the impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We used the decomposition method to estimate the impact of ageing, population growth, and epidemiological change on cancer-related DALYs from 1990 to 2019, stratified by 204 countries/territories and by their sociodemographic index (SDI). This approach separates the net effect of population ageing from population growth and change in age-specific DALY rates. RESULTS: Cancer-related DALYs among indi

Correlation of time trends of air pollutants, greenspaces and tracheal, bronchus and lung cancer incidence and mortality among the adults in United States.

BACKGROUND: Tracheal, Bronchus, and Lung (TBL) cancer continues to represent the majority of cancer-related incidence and mortality in United States (U.S.). While air pollutants are considered essential risk factors, both global and national average concentrations of major harmful air pollutants have significantly decreased over the decades. Green space may have a beneficial effect on human health. METHODS: We obtained data on national and state-level burden of TBL cancer, the annual average concentration of main air pollutants, and levels of green spaces in 2007, 2013, and 2019. According to

Association between Helicobacter pylori and its eradication and the development of cancer.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a gram-negative gastrointestinal pathogen that colonises the human stomach and is considered a major risk factor for gastric cancer and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Furthermore, H. pylori is a potential trigger of a wide spectrum of extragastric cancer entities, extraintestinal chronic inflammatory processes and autoimmune diseases. In the present study, we evaluated the association between H. pylori infection and its eradication with the development of subsequent gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal cancer. METHODS: We identi

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer mortality in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, data projections indicated an increase in cancer mortality for the following years due to the overload of health services and the replacement of health priorities. The first studies published with data from mortality records have not confirmed these projections. However, cancer mortality is not an outcome that occurs immediately, and analyses with more extended follow-up periods are necessary. This study aims to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mortality from all types and the five most common types of cancer in Brazil a

Fatty acid traits mediate the effects of uric acid on cancers: a Mendelian randomization study.

INTRODUCTION: Previous findings on the association between uric acid (UA) levels and cancer risk are conflicting. Moreover, the mechanisms underlying the interactions between UA levels, fatty acid traits, and cancer outcomes remain complex; it is still unclear whether elevated UA levels influence fatty acid traits and, thereby, contribute to an increased cancer risk. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between UA levels and cancer risk, with a specific focus on the potential mediating role of fatty acid traits. METHODS: We employed a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis utiliz

Prevalence of HIV in people with potential HIV-indicator conditions in Germany: an analysis of data from statutory health insurances.

BACKGROUND: In care of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), early diagnosis of infection is one of the greatest challenges remaining. A promising approach to increase early diagnosis could be optimized HIV testing in persons with indicator conditions (ICs). ICs are conditions which are AIDS-defining in people living with HIV, conditions that may have significant adverse consequences for the individual's clinical management if the presence of HIV infection is not detected, and conditions with an (undiagnosed) HIV prevalence of ≥0.1%. METHODS: In this cohort study, anonymous r
