Effects of a brief resonance frequency breathing intervention on heart rate variability and perceived stress in postgraduate students: a pilot and feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Stress during postgraduate education can undermine well-being, academic performance, and physiological regulation. Resonance frequency breathing (RFB) is a slow-paced breathing technique associated with enhanced autonomic regulation, as indexed by heart rate variability (HRV). However, validated protocols are often time-intensive, limiting real-world implementation. This pilot study evaluated the preliminary effects, feasibility, and acceptability of a brief, app-guided RFB intervention during an academically demanding period. METHODS: Twelve postgraduate students were randomly

Exploring dance movement therapy as a novel approach to improving heart rate variability in healthy older people.

A decline in cardiac autonomic control, as assessed by heart rate variability (HRV), is considered a natural component of aging. However, physical exercise, including dance-based activities, can be effective in preventing/reversing this decline. Aim of this study was to verify whether Dance Movement Therapy (DMT), which uses dance, movement, body awareness and embodied interpersonal communication to promote wellbeing, improves vagally-mediated HRV, which has been linked to physical and mental health, in a sample of people aged over 65. To this purpose, HRV-derived vagal and sympathetic indices

Mitochondrial remodeling in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Extensive mitochondrial remodeling occurs during heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), yielding either protective adaptations that mitigate dysfunction or detrimental alterations that accelerate disease progression. Central to this remodeling are maladaptive metabolic reprogramming, featured by aberrant fuel preference and electron transport chain deficiency, which underlie the depletion of bioenergetic reserves. Concurrently, alterations in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-producing sites and antioxidant system elevate mitochondrial ROS production while diminishing ROS scavenging

Cardiac Structure and Function in Women After Preeclampsia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia increases the risk of long-term heart failure (HF) by 4-fold. Unfortunately, however, universal guidelines for postpartum HF surveillance are lacking. Stage B/subclinical HF has been shown to predict risk of major adverse cardiac outcomes. Some suggest that initiating cardioprotective therapy at this early stage can reduce progression to symptomatic HF. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to explore cardiac structure and function in women with a history of preeclampsia and to identify when subclinical HF develops in this group. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDL

Real-Time Hemodynamic Guidance During Valve-in-Valve TAVI.

OBJECTIVES: To describe hemodynamic guidance during valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation using simultaneous aortic and left ventricular pressure monitoring. KEY STEPS: A 90-year-old woman with a failed 19-mm surgical bioprosthesis and severe transvalvular regurgitation underwent valve-in-valve implantation with a self-expanding valve guided by a SavvyWire. During the first deployment, the aortic waveform remained completely flat after pacing was discontinued, whereas left ventricular pulsatility persisted; the valve was recaptured. During the second deployment, aortic pulsat

Pacing Rate Acceleration in Right-Sided Heart Failure: Insight From an On-Off-On Clinical Course.

BACKGROUND: Treatment options remain limited for patients with right-sided heart failure (RHF) and severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Whether higher heart rate is beneficial in patients with RHF remains unclear. CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old woman with RHF and severe TR experienced marked hemodynamic and symptomatic improvement after increasing her permanent pacing rate from 60 to 90 beats/min. At 3 months, rate reduction to 60 beats/min provoked symptom recurrence within 3 days; restoring the rate to 90 beats/min promptly relieved symptoms. At 6 months, left ventricular ejection fraction rem

Thyroid-stimulating hormone exacerbates mitochondrial energy dysregulation and cardiac remodeling with involvement of the AMPK/PGC-1α pathway.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is linked to the progression of heart failure (HF); however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the regulation of HF and myocardial energy metabolism. METHODS: In vitro, cardiomyocytes were treated with TSH to assess pathological stress markers and mitochondrial energy metabolism. In vivo, a SCH model was established in thyrocyte-specific TSHR knockout mice, with concurrent isoproterenol (ISO)-induced HF. Serum FT4 and TSH levels, cardiac function, and

Maternal Anxiety Surrounding Fetal Cardiac Evaluation: A Prospective Single-Center Cohort Study.

Fetal echocardiography has transformed prenatal cardiac diagnosis, yet the emotional burden of referral and evaluation remains poorly characterized. We aimed to quantify maternal anxiety before and after fetal cardiac evaluation (FCE), identify clinical predictors of anxiety, and assess whether anxiety changes following evaluation and consultation regardless of outcome. In this prospective cohort study, 117 pregnant women undergoing initial or follow-up FCE completed pre- and post-consultation assessments using a seven-item symptom inventory adapted from the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Ques

Z-Score Calculators for Cross Sectional Area to Height Ratio of the Aortic Root and Ascending Aorta in Healthy Children.

In pediatrics, echocardiographic measurements of the aorta are normalized using body surface area (BSA), which do not account for differences in body composition amongst children or as they grow. Height has been shown to have a linear relationship with measures of aortic size in pediatrics. Data from the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN) Echo Z-Score database was used to develop z-scores for cross sectional area to height ratio (CSA/ht) on 3215 healthy pediatric patients ≤ 18 years old. Aortic root and ascending aorta CSA/ht (cm2/m) were calculated. Linear regression was performed to assess the re

Traversing the labyrinth: multimodality imaging of Kawasaki disease with saccular coronary artery aneurysms.

Kawasaki disease (KD), an acute vasculitis of childhood, is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in developed countries with approximately 25% of untreated cases resulting in coronary artery aneurysms (1). Treatment during the acute phase with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and aspirin reduces the prevalence of coronary artery abnormalities; long-term management with thromboprophylaxis, beta blockers, statins, or surgical coronary artery bypass is determined based on coronary Z score, response to treatment, and evidence of myocardial ischemia throughout surveillance (2). The presente

A Whole-Heart Fluid-Structure Interaction Model for Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair in Primary Mitral Regurgitation.

PURPOSE: Primary mitral regurgitation (MR) resulting from chordal rupture leads to acute volume overload and elevated left atrial pressure. Transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TMVr) devices can effectively reduce MR, but their impact on global cardiac mechanics and diastolic filling remains difficult to predict. This study develops a whole-heart FSI framework for TMVr by extending a previously developed whole-heart model to represent chordal rupture and edge-to-edge repair and to quantify their structural and hemodynamic consequences. METHODS: A three-dimensional FSI model of the

Cold-Water Immersion for Post-exercise Recovery: An Overlap-Aware Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Cold-water immersion (CWI) is widely used after strenuous exercise, but review-level findings vary by outcome, comparator, recovery window, population, and protocol. Reuse of the same primary studies across reviews can also exaggerate apparent consistency. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Scopus from inception to 30 January 2026 for systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and network meta-analyses of post-exercise CWI. Fourteen reviews were included. Primary-study overlap was quantified using the corrected covered area (CCA) overal

Methodological Considerations for Using Hair Cortisol as a Biomarker Following No Measurable Effects of Tactile Massage in Adolescents With ADHD.

AIMS: Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis has been proposed as a mechanism in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Tactile massage is suggested to influence long-term cortisol secretion in adolescents with ADHD, although it remains unclear whether such an effect occurs. This study examined whether tactile massage alters hair cortisol in adolescents with ADHD. METHODS: Fourteen adolescents aged 15-17 with ADHD received 10 weekly 60-min standardised tactile massage sessions. Hair samples were collected at five time points and analysed for cortisol using a compet

Orexin-A and Periosteal Pressure Sensitivity during acute mental and physical stress: a randomized cross-over study.

BACKGROUND: Objective physiological markers reflecting central autonomic regulation remain limited. The orexin (hypocretin) system, localized in the lateral hypothalamus, integrates arousal, metabolic state, cardiovascular control, homeostatic control, and stress responsiveness. Periosteal Pressure Sensitivity (PPS) at the sternum has been proposed as a peripheral marker for central sympathetic activation. The present study examined for the first time the association between PPS and salivary orexin-A during experimentally induced mental and physical stress and subsequent recovery. METHODS: In
