[Hand for the dermatologist].

Through its anatomical, topographical, and functional distinctiveness, more than all other parts of the body, the hand is the interface between humans and their environment. All types of stimulus produce cutaneous signs in the hands, notably cold, light, pressure, contact, etc. Exposure to light makes it the region where photodermatosis is expressed, but also a particular site for cutaneous carcinogenesis. The countless chemical substances that the hand encounters can create specific or particular diseases in this location (irritative dermitis, contact eczema, hyperkeratosis, atrophy, etc.). T

Unusual clinical variants of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sicily.

BACKGROUND: The term "leishmaniasis" defines a group of vector-borne diseases caused by species of the genus Leishmania and characterized by a spectrum of clinical manifestations. Parasite properties (infectivity, pathogenicity, virulence), host factors, and host responses regulate heterogeneous disease expression. Sicily is one of the major islands of the Mediterranean Basin and is considered to be a hypo-endemic area for cutaneous leishmaniasis. Leishmania infantum is the most common species on the island. METHODS: Fifty patients (both sexes and different ages) with lesions clinically sugge

Rhinophymous leishmaniasis: A new variant.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is known for its wide clinical spectrum. The nose is one of the usual sites where the disease can present in many forms, such as psoriasiform plaques, furunculoid nodules, lupoid plaques, and erysipeloid or mucocutaneous types. We present a new morphology, i.e. rhinophyma-like plaque in an elderly male patient who presented with a large infiltrated plaque involving his nose and the adjoining area of his upper lip. It appeared to be rhinophyma of the nose but was diagnosed as cutaneous leishmaniasis after the demonstration of leishmania parasites in a skin smear preparat

Erysipeloid.

We report a case of erysipeloid in a 73-year-old woman. The disease was characterized clinically by erythematous and erosive lesions on three fingers of the left hand. Diagnosis was made based on the patient's occupation (housewife), history of previous traumatic contact with a scorpion fish, typical inflammatory lesions located on one hand, lack of severe systemic features, mild laboratory abnormalities and rapid remission after specific treatment.

Erysipeloid: a review.

Erysipeloid is an occupational infection of the skin caused by traumatic penetration of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. The disease is characterized clinically by an erythematous oedema, with well-defined and raised borders, usually localized to the back of one hand and/or fingers. Vesicular, bullous and erosive lesions may also be present. The lesion may be asymptomatic or accompanied by mild pruritus, pain and fever. In addition to cutaneous infection, E. rhusiopathiae can cause endocarditis, which may be acute or subacute. Endocarditis is rare and has a male predilection. It usually occurs in

Tropical dermatology: marine and aquatic dermatology.

UNLABELLED: Dermatoses caused by marine organisms are frequently seen in dermatology clinics worldwide. Cutaneous injuries after exposure to marine environments include bacterial and fungal infections and lesions caused by aquatic plants and protists. Some of these diseases are well known by dermatologists, such as Vibrio vulnificus septicemia and erysipeloid, but others are uncommon, such as envenomation caused by ingestion or contact with certain dinoflagellates or cyanobacteria, which are associated with rashes that can begin within minutes after exposure. Many marine/aquatic invertebrates,

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a facultative, non-spore-forming, non-acid-fast, small, Gram-positive bacillus. The organism was first established as a human pathogen late in the nineteenth century. Three forms of human disease have been recognised since then. These include a localised cutaneous lesion form, erysipeloid, a generalised cutaneous form and a septicaemic form often associated with endocarditis. The organism is ubiquitous and able to persist for a long period of time in the environment, including marine locations. It is a pathogen or a commensal in a wide variety of wild and domest

Many faces of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is known for its clinical diversity and increasing numbers of new and rare variants of the disease are being reported these days. AIM: The aim of this descriptive study was to look for and report the atypical presentations of this common disease occurring in Pakistan. METHODS: The study was carried out in three hospitals (MH, Rawalpindi; PAF Hospital, Sargodha; and CMH, Muzaffarabad) from 2002 to 2006. Military and civilian patients of all ages, both males and females, belonging to central and north Punjab province and Kashmir were included in the stu

A case of erysipeloid cutaneous leishmaniasis: atypical and unusual clinical variant.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis has a number of morphologic variants such as acute paronychial, chancriform, annular, palmoplantar, zosteriform, and eczematoid, which depend on the immune condition of the patients, the subspecies of the Leishmania, and the area of the localization. In recent times, the number of reports of new and rare variants of cutaneous leishmaniasis has been increasing. In this report, we describe a very rare variant of Cutaneous leishmaniasis, presented with ulceration on glabellar region and infiltrative erythematous lesions covering the center of the face, resembling erysipela

[Anatomo-clinical features of an erysipeloid form of cutaneous leismaniasis in Tunisia].

The erysipeloid form of cutaneous leishmaniasis is considered as an unusual and rare clinical presentation in Tunisia. Our prospective study on 4 observations, aimed at examining the clinical, histological and progressive features of the "erysipeloid" form of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Our patients were 3 females and one male more than 62 years old. Their cutaneous leishmaniasis was clinically characterised by an infiltrated and extensive plaque which was localised on the face covering the nose and cheeks looking like erysipelas. The treatment was intramuscular meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime)

Gemcitabine-related "pseudocellulitis": report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

Gemcitabine is a chemotherapeutic agent whose cutaneous toxicities are easily mistaken for infections. We describe 2 patients, 1 with gemcitabine-induced radiation recall dermatitis and 1 with gemcitabine-related erysipeloid reaction, who received misdiagnoses of infectious cellulitis and were given empirical antibiotics. Recognition of these syndromes is important to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.

Erysipeloid cutaneous metastasis from bladder carcinoma.

Cutaneous metastases from bladder cancer are uncommon, especially in the female population. Although their clinical presentation may vary, the erysipelas-like appearance and the lower extremities location represent exceptional features. We describe a 56-year-old female with a history of bladder adenocarcinoma (T3N0M0) who presented erythematous plaques with an erysipelas-like appearance located on the groins and thighs. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry from skin lesions were consistent with metastases from bladder carcinoma. We report this case for the unusual clinical features and beca

[Erysipelas-like dermatitis of the legs revealing aspergilloma of the maxillary sinus].

BACKGROUND: Skin signs is associated with Aspergillus are rare and are seen principally in immunodepressed patients. Distinction is generally made between primary skin aspergillosis, caused by direct cutaneous inoculation with the offending organism, and secondary skin aspergillosis, associated with peripheral emboli from an area of chronic pulmonary or sinus mycetoma. There have been rare reports of indirect satellite skin signs resulting from Aspergillus infection, and below we present such a case. [Clinical polymorphism of cutaneous leishmaniasis in centre and south of Tunisia].

The cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an affection which is quite well known in Tunisia. The zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major by far the more frequent, is endemo-epidemic in the centre and south of the country. It is characterized by clinical polymorphism. The aim of our study is to precise the different clinical aspects of the CL in our region through a prospective study of 102 cases. The average age was 37.8 years old (from 4 to 78 years old) with a slight female predominance. All of our cases lived or stayed in an endemic zone. Various clinical forms were noted in o

Chronic zosteriform cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Cutaneous leishmanasis (CL) may present with unusual clinical variants such as acute paronychial, annular, palmoplantar, zosteriform, erysipeloid, and sporotrichoid. The zosteriform variant has rarely been reported. Unusual lesions may be morphologically attributed to an altered host response or owing to an atypical strain of parasites in these lesions. We report a patient with CL in a multidermatomal pattern on the back and buttock of a man in Khozestan province in the south of Iran. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of multidermatomal zosteriform CL. It was resistant to conve

Erysipeloid--case report.

Erysipeloid is an acute, bacterial infection of traumatized skin in an individual who was in direct contact with meat or other animal products contaminated with a gram-positive bacillus Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. We present a case of a 50-year-old housewife whose hobby was fishing, with a reddish, tender patch on the fifth finger and dorsum of the left hand, which developed a week after she had sustained an injury while boning the fish. The patient was treated with orally administered penicillin V 1,500,000 IU t.i.d. for 7 days, with complete resolution.
