Data-driven motion compensation in HR-pQCT.

Objective.High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography enables the assessment of bone mineral density and three-dimensional microstructure of peripheral limbs. Due to its long scanning time, it is especially susceptible to patient induced motion artifacts. The goal of this study is to compensate for such artifacts without requiring excessive computation time, while still avoiding the hallucination of erroneous structures.Approach.This work proposes a machine learning-based approach for the rapid estimation of rigid motion parameters directly from raw projection data. The model i

Comparison of subjective outcomes between single-bundle and double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in patients with flat lateral tibial slope.

OBJECTIVE: A high lateral tibial slope (LTS) has been associated with an increased risk of graft failure and inferior subjective outcomes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), but the impact of a flat LTS remains unclear. This study aimed to compare long-term subjective outcomes of single-bundle (SB) and double-bundle (DB) ACLR in patients with a flat LTS to determine the more favorable approach. METHODS: The study comprised 136 patients with an LTS less than 7.4 degrees who underwent SB-ACLR (64 cases) or DB-ACLR (72 cases). Lateral tibial slope was measured on preopera

Recurrent Thoracic Intradural Extramedullary Calcifying Pseudoneoplasm.

A case of calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis (CAPNON) that arose as an intradural mass of the thoracic spinal cord of a 53-year-old man, a motorcycle mechanic, is reported. The mass showed regrowth after the subtotal removal and was resected again 8 years later. Both primary and regrowth lesions consisted of calcified round nodules of the myxochondroid matrix rimmed by polygonal or short spindle cells. Fibrous tissue showing chronic inflammatory cell infiltration intervened between the nodules. Lamellar or woven bone tissue was also observed. In the regrowth lesion, the myxochondroid ma

The Hyoid Bone in Robin Sequence: Morphology and Position in the Context of Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Robin Sequence (RS) is a congenital condition marked by micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction. Patients with RS exhibit anatomical differences in the hyoid bone, a key mediator of swallowing and respiration. Severe RS is treated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) to lengthen the mandible and increase oropharyngeal space, the latter thought to be caused by changes in hyoid position. Here, we test this hypothesis by quantitatively evaluating 3D hyoid position and morphology in patients with RS and comparing them to pediatric controls. METHODS: Computed tomog

Evolution of the axial skeleton of early dinosaurs and the role of meristic and homeotic processes.

Changes in the axial skeleton played an important role in dinosaur evolution, with some of the oldest dinosaurs showing evidence of sacralization events. The increased number of early dinosaur discoveries over the last decade provides an opportunity to better characterize this phenomenon. It has led us to revise our understanding of axial evolution in early dinosaurs. Results support that the last common ancestor of Dinosauria would probably present 9 cervical, 16 dorsal and 2 sacral vertebrae (primordials). Early saurischians maintain a consistent number of vertebrae with presacral origin, an

Primary Cemented Total Knee Arthroplasty With Fully Cemented Short-Stemmed Tibial Components Is Not Associated With Reduced Five-Year Survival.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests revision for early aseptic loosening following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is associated with both short, native tibial stem (TS) design and morbid obesity (body mass index ≥ 40). The use of short, fully cemented stem extensions has been suggested to mitigate this risk. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients undergoing primary TKA at a single, large academic center between August 2015 and December 2022. Cohorts were created based on the presence (stemmed tibia (ST)) or absence (nonstemmed tibia (NST)) of a fully cemented short TS ext

Effects of C3/C4 Manual Decompression on Scapular Posterior Tilt, Lower Trapezius Muscle Activity, and Strength in Individuals With Lower Trapezius Weakness.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lower trapezius (LT) weakness-induced anterior scapular tilt is a key mechanism of shoulder dysfunction. Although the primary motor innervation of the trapezius originates from the spinal accessory nerve, cervical nerve branches (C3/C4) contribute sensory and accessory motor fibers, leading to hypotheses that C3/C4 segmental sensitivity may be associated with altered LT performance. We aimed to investigate the immediate effects of C3/C4 manual decompression on scapular posterior tilt (SPT) kinematics, LT activity, and maximal isometric strength. METHODS: Twenty-seven p

A pedicled buccal fat pad for paranasal volume augmentation in orthognathic surgery: a case report.

PURPOSE: Nowadays, most patients undergo orthognathic surgery primarily for aesthetic reasons; therefore, achieving facial harmony should be a priority for the surgeon, equal in importance to the final occlusion. Le Fort I advancement and clockwise rotation can partially fill the paranasal deficiency, but at the cost of significantly increasing both the width of the nasal wings and nasal tip projection. In patients with severe maxillary hypoplasia, a hyperprojected nasal tip, and a wide alar base, these movements may be aesthetically counterproductive. Many soft-tissue ancillary procedures hav

The effect of resting tongue pressure, lip-cheek pressure, and interdental force on mandibular arch collapse and mesial molar drift: A preliminary 3D finite element study.

Relapse of aligned mandibular anterior teeth and the progressive collapse of the mandibular anterior arch are historically significant problems for orthodontists. The etiology of this collapse, and the cause of mesial molar drift, are unknown. However, light continuous (quasi-continuous) intra-oral pressures and forces applied to the mandibular dentition have been implicated. To explore this further, we use three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate the influence of these intra-oral loads (tongue pressure, lip-cheek pressure, and interdental force) on macroscopic teeth displaceme

Navigating challenges in prosthodontic rehabilitation after long-term delay following fibula free flap reconstruction with a unique overlay removable prosthesis and large vertical dimension increase.

This case report highlights the experience of one maxillofacial surgical patient who delayed prosthodontic treatment for 7 years as they saved to self-fund access to a subsidized prosthodontic service. Without the benefit of a restored opposing dentition for a prolonged period of time, maxillary occlusal plane disruption occurred as a downstream clinical consequence. To manage the complexities arising from delayed presentation, the prosthodontic team developed a highly tailored treatment plan to meet the patient's unique clinical needs, which included fabrication of customized healing abutment

Dogma Under the Knife: Challenging the Status Quo in Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is among the most successful procedures in orthopaedic surgery, reliably providing pain relief, functional improvement, and durable implant survivorship. Despite these achievements, approximately 10 to 20% of patients report persistent dissatisfaction following primary TKA, even in the absence of technical failure. This disconnect between implant longevity and patient-perceived success has prompted renewed examination of the foundational principles that have historically guided TKA practice. Advances in implant design, biomaterials, surgical te

Rural-Urban Disparities in Survival Among Patients With Malignant Primary Osseous Neoplasms of the Spine and Sacropelvis: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

Background Malignant primary osseous neoplasms of the spine and sacropelvis are rare tumors whose outcomes rely heavily on specialized, guideline-driven care, which is concentrated in metropolitan referral centers. Investigations of rurality in this population have been limited by single-histology cohorts, small numbers of rural patients, and unadjusted comparisons, and none have weighed geographic disadvantage directly against the socioeconomic conditions with which it coexists. This study aimed to determine whether rural residence is independently associated with overall survival and cause-s

Notch-referenced mediolateral verification of tibial tunnel position in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a 3D imaging validation study.

BACKGROUND: Non-anatomic tibial tunnel placement remains a leading contributor to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) failure. Mediolateral (ML) tunnel positioning is particularly difficult intraoperatively because no consistent bony landmark defines the lateral footprint border. PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy of a novel intraoperative Notch-Referenced Mediolateral (NRML) verification technique by comparing the ML position of the tibial tunnel center (TTC) on postoperative 3D CT with the native tibial footprint center (TFC) on preoperative 3D MRI. METHODS: In this retrospecti
