Regeneration of Bone, Cartilage, and Tooth Following Lower Jaw Amputation in Newts.

Background/Objectives: In humans, diseases such as oral cancer may require surgical amputation of the jaw. This severe disruption causes impairments in eating, swallowing, and speech, leading to a significant decline in quality of life. In contrast, newts, a group of urodele amphibians, can regenerate their jaws even in adulthood. This study explored how adult newts reconstruct lower jaws after substantial loss and clarified how this process contributes to rapid functional recovery when feeding becomes impossible. Methods: Adult Japanese fire-bellied newts (Cynops pyrrhogaster) underwent surgi

Forensic Gender Prediction by Using Mandibular Morphometric Indices: A Panoramic Radiograph Study.

Aim and objective This study aims to assess the accuracy of gender estimation using gonial and antegonial angles and determine the gender of the given samples using gonial and antegonial angles. Introduction An essential component of the human skull, the mandible, exhibits sexual dimorphism, making it a valuable tool in forensic and anthropological investigations for detecting sex. This procedure can be especially difficult in situations where there are large numbers of casualties, natural disasters, or widely dispersed remains. The mandible is an accurate indicator of age and sex because it r

Biomechanical Evaluation of the Osseointegration Levels of Implants Placed Simultaneously With Tibia, Femur, and Jaw Allogeneic Bone Grafts.

In implant-supported prosthetic treatments, the jaw bones may not always have enough bone to accommodate implants. Allogeneic grafts can also be preferred as an alternative to autogenous grafts in cases of vertical and horizontal bone deficiencies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the osseointegration levels of lathe-faced titanium implants placed together with allogeneic bone tissue transplants obtained from tibia, femur, and mandible bones using a biomechanical method. Twenty-eight female Sprague Dawley rats were included in the study. The subjects were divided into groups where bone tra

Treatment with an inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 9 or cathepsin K lengthens embryonic lower jaw bone.

OBJECTIVES: Skeletal malocclusions are common, and severe malocclusions are treated by invasive surgeries. Recently, jaw bone length has been shown to be developmentally controlled by osteoclasts. Our objective was to determine the effect of inhibiting osteoclast-secreted proteolytic enzymes on lower jaw bone length of avian embryos by pharmacologically inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) or cathepsin K (CTSK). METHODS: Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) embryos were given a single dose of an inhibitor of MMP9 (iMMP9), an inhibitor CTSK (iCTSK), or vehicle at a developmental stage wh

Uncovering the unique characteristics of the mandible to improve clinical approaches to mandibular regeneration.

The mandible (lower jaw) bone is aesthetically responsible for shaping the lower face, physiologically in charge of the masticatory movements, and phonetically accountable for the articulation of different phonemes. Thus, pathologies that result in great damage to the mandible severely impact the lives of patients. Mandibular reconstruction techniques are mainly based on the use of flaps, most notably free vascularized fibula flaps. However, the mandible is a craniofacial bone with unique characteristics. Its morphogenesis, morphology, physiology, biomechanics, genetic profile, and osteoimmune

Surface conditioning of additively manufactured titanium implants and its influence on materials properties and in vitro biocompatibility.

Customized osteosynthesis materials of titanium alloy can be generated by additive manufacturing replacing the complex adaptation to the patient individual anatomy, especially to the lower jaw bone which shows a highly individual surface area. After printing further conditioning is necessary to adjust surface roughness. The aim of the present study was to analyse the effect of different grinding and polishing procedures on sample surface and composition and in vitro biocompatibility. Ti-6Al-4V ELI samples printed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) were post-treated by multi-level procedures to

GUIDED REGENERATION OF JAW BONE DEFECTS WITH COMBINATION OF OSTEOPLASTIC MATERIALS AND STEM CELLS.

Reconstruction of mandibular defects is a challenging issue in maxillofacial surgery. Success of the treatment is defined by the process of reparative regeneration of bone tissue, which is often accompanied with wound infection, failure of microcirculation and tissue hypoxia. Aim of our project was to demonstrate the advantage of osteoplastic material and bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells combination in regeneration of lower jaw bone defect. For this reason, mandibular bone defect was created in laboratory rats. Experimental treatment of animals was performed in three different ways:

Crestal module design optimization of dental implants: finite element analysis and in vivo studies.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of Bone Level dental implants with four different neck designs in contact with cortical bone. Numerical simulations were performed using a Finite Element Method (FEM) based-model. In order to verify the FEM model, the in silico results were compared with the results obtained from histological analysis performed in an in vivo study with New Zealand rabbits. FEM was performed using a computerized 3D model of Bone Level dental implants inserted in the lower jaw bone with an applied axial load of 100 N. The analysis was performed usi

Assessment of Mandibular Surface Area Changes in Bruxers Versus Controls on Panoramic Radiographic Images: A Case Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is the commonest of the many parafunctional activities of the masticatory system. Opinions on the causes of bruxism were numerous and widely varying. It can occur during sleep as well as wakefulness. Bruxism was for long considered a major cause of tooth wear. Other effects of bruxism may include tooth movement and tooth mobility, as well as changes in oral soft tissues and jaw bone. Since the exact etiology and manifestations are unclear, it was difficult to diagnose Bruxism. In this study, we evaluated the area change as measured from digital panoramic radiographs that ca

A pilot randomised controlled trial evaluating mini and conventional implant retained dentures on the function and quality of life of patients with an edentulous mandible.

BACKGROUND: Total tooth loss (edentulism) can be a debilitating condition, impacting on ability to chew, speak and interact with others. The most common treatment is with complete removable dentures, which may be successful, but in the lower jaw, bone resorption that worsens over time makes denture-wearing difficult. Two dental implants in the mandible to retain the lower denture has been advocated as the gold standard of treatment, but has not been universally provided due largely to financial constraints and also patient fear. Mini implants (MI) are cheaper and less invasive than conventiona

Acquisition of Lateralized Predation Behavior Associated with Development of Mouth Asymmetry in a Lake Tanganyika Scale-Eating Cichlid Fish.

The scale-eating cichlid Perissodus microlepis with asymmetric mouth is an attractive model of behavioral laterality: each adult tears off scales from prey fishes' left or right flanks according to the direction in which its mouth is skewed. To investigate the development of behavioral laterality and mouth asymmetry, we analyzed stomach contents and lower jaw-bone asymmetry of various-sized P. microlepis (22 ≤ SL<115 mm) sampled in Lake Tanganyika. The shapes of the pored scales found in each specimen's stomach indicated its attack side preference. Early-juvenile specimens (SL<45 mm) feeding m
