Infantile fetus-in-fetu in limited resource settings: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare congenital anomaly of embryogenesis in which a malformed twin is enclosed within the body of its host. FIF represents an uncommon cause of abdominal mass and is classically distinguished from teratoma by the presence of a vertebral column, limb buds, or other organized organ systems. While most reported cases occur in the retroperitoneal region, FIF has also been documented in atypical sites, including the cranial cavity and scrotal sac. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 3-month-old boy who exhibited irritability and progressi

Different types of sensory nerve endings in the urinary bladder of mice arising from dorsal root ganglia (DRG) at the thoracolumbar region of vertebral column.

The urinary bladder is innervated by two anatomically distinct populations of sensory neurons originating from dorsal root ganglia (DRG): one from the thoracolumbar (TL) and another from the lumbosacral (LS) spinal region. While we previously characterized the morphology and distribution of sensory endings arising from LS DRG, the terminals of TL afferents remain undefined. In this study, we employed anterograde neuronal tracing to map these endings in mice. Following bilateral injection of dextran biotin into T12-L3 DRG and a 7-9-day recovery, whole bladders were processed to visualize spinal

Retroperitoneal Malignant Triton Tumor in a 6-Year-Old Child Mimicking Wilms Tumor: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Malignant Triton tumor (MTT) is a rare, aggressive variant of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) featuring divergent rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. Comprising less than 5% of MPNST cases, MTT is associated with a poor prognosis, exhibiting a five-year survival rate of only 27.5%. Its occurrence in the pediatric retroperitoneum is exceedingly rare and frequently mimics more common malignancies, such as Wilms tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old female presented with a four-month history of a painful right flank mass and lower limb functional impairment, without cl

Koala Kyphoscoliosis: Radiographic and CT Features of Abnormal Vertebral Column Curvature in Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) of the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia.

Abnormal vertebral column curvature is sporadically reported in koalas of the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia. This study evaluates the imaging features of 23 koalas from the Mount Lofty Ranges presenting with abnormal vertebral column curvature between 2015 and 2023 using digital radiography and computed tomography (CT). All images were evaluated by four reviewers to assess curve morphology, severity and Cobb angles for both scoliosis and kyphosis. For Cobb angle measurement, radiography performed similarly to CT with good agreement as measured by intraclass correlation coefficient (0.835

New Insights Into Cranial Base Ontogeny in Modern Humans Through Morphometric Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The cranial base is located at the interface between the face, the brain, and the vertebral column. Understanding its growth is essential for elucidating key aspects of craniofacial development, neurodevelopment, and locomotor function. This study aims to examine the developmental trajectories of the three cranial fossae, anterior, middle, and posterior, in terms of both size and shape. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 203 CT scans of individuals aged from birth to 15 years were segmented and analyzed. Traditional morphometric analyses based on linear measurements were first conducted to as

Unilateral posterior vertebral column resection versus bilateral approach for post-traumatic thoracic angular kyphosis: a propensity-matched non-inferiority study.

PURPOSE: Posterior vertebral column resection (PVCR) for severe post-traumatic thoracic angular kyphosis is effective but carries high morbidity. This study compares unilateral PVCR (UPVCR) with traditional bilateral PVCR (BPVCR), hypothesizing that UPVCR is non-inferior to BPVCR in deformity correction while offering improved perioperative outcomes in appropriately selected patients with an intact contralateral osseo-ligamentous tension band. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent PVCR for post-traumatic thoracic angular kyphosis (January 2019 - June 2023) at a terti

Pain has limited predictive value for fractures following falls in older people: insight from a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: In the emergency department (ED), decisions regarding radiological imaging for older patients who have experienced low-energy falls (LEF) are frequently complicated by inconsistencies between the reported mechanism of injury, the patients' symptoms, and the findings on physical examination. Our study aimed to investigate the coherence between physician-documented complaints, the implementation of radiological imaging and the diagnosis of fractures of the vertebral column, rib cage and pelvic ring. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a retrospective consecutive sample of 2882

Fetiform Teratoma With a Digitiform Projection and Complex Organoid Differentiation (Adrenal and Pancreatic).

Fetiform teratoma (FT) and fetus-in-fetu (FIF) represent a spectrum of rare retroperitoneal masses containing organoid structures. While FIF is classically defined by the presence of a vertebral axis, FT lacks this organized skeletal development. Distinguishing between these entities is critical given the malignant potential associated with FT, estimated at approximately 10%. We report a case of a 5-month-old male presenting with a large (12 cm) retroperitoneal mass and elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP 56.8 IU/mL; age-matched reference <7 IU/mL). Macroscopically, the resected tumor featured a d

Decision-Making in the Surgical Management of Rigid Congenital Spinal Deformities: The Role of Vertebral Column Resection and Less Invasive Alternatives.

Background: Vertebral column resection (VCR) has historically been recognized as the most efficacious corrective intervention for severe rigid spinal deformities. Nevertheless, advancements in preoperative optimization, staged corrective methodologies, osteotomies, and contemporary instrumentation have broadened the spectrum of therapeutic options available. The definitive role of VCR in the modern management of rigid congenital spinal deformities remains a topic of ongoing scholarly discourse. Methods: This study presents two illustrative cases of severe congenital spinal deformities that wer

Hybrid III lumbar spinal column injury risk curves from vertical impact.

Musculoskeletal injuries from underbody blasts due to the detonation of improvised explosive devices (IED) impart dynamic loading to the human vertebral column via the pelvis region, and the primary insult from the IED is absorbed first by the lumbar spine before it traverses to the thoracic and cervical spines. Injuries from these scenarios have been documented in many clinical and retrospective studies. Although the dynamic response index continues to be used to predict lumbar spine injuries, it is based on the accelerations of the seat pan. A need exists to develop lumbar spine injury crite

Multi-view constrained semi-supervised vertebra detection for 3D ultrasound spine volume.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is a spinal disorder characterized by a three-dimensional (3D) deformity of the vertebral column. 3D ultrasound imaging has been used for scoliosis assessment, and automatic vertebra detection is important for objective evaluation of spinal deformity. However, existing automatic assessment methods are mainly based on two-dimensional (2D) projection images and require large amounts of labeled data, leading to incomplete use of volumetric ultrasound information and substantial annotation effort. PURPOSE: To develop a multi-view constrained semi-supervised learning (SSL) me

Outcomes of vertebral column resection in rigid, severe adult and pediatric spinal deformities.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVES: Managing severe and rigid spinal deformities is challenging to correct. Vertebral column resection (VCR) is often necessary for adequate correction. Substantial risks remain with blood loss, prolonged operative time, and risk to the neural elements. We studied VCR in rigid spinal deformities, including deformity correction, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) alerts, spinal cord/nerve injuries, and perioperative adverse events. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 55 patients who underwent VCR for severe and rig

Divergent dogfish: morphological correlates of vertebral column bending mechanics in two species of distantly related sharks.

BACKGROUND: Dogfish sharks from two different Orders - Squalus acanthias and Mustelus canis - offer the opportunity to compare whether known differences in vertebral morphology correlate with differences in the dynamic mechanical properties of the vertebral column. Histology of a caudal intervertebral joint in both species, combined with morphometrics of the entire column, provide the morphological information. Dynamic bending tests of ten-vertebrae sections of the vertebral column from the head to the base of the caudal fin are conducted by varying the amplitude of lateral curvature and bendi

Current advances in extended resections for non-small cell lung cancer-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) encompasses a biologically and anatomically highly heterogenous spectrum. For tumours with infiltration of the chest wall, thoracic inlet, central airways, great vessels, diaphragm or vertebral column, the goal of surgery remains a complete R0 resection, but the boundary between resectable and unresectable disease is fluid and depends on anatomy, nodal burden, response to induction therapy, functional reserve as well as institutional experience. This review summarizes current concepts in extended resection and propos

A Radiomics-Driven Model to Distinguish Between Clinically Similar Myxopapillary Ependymomas and Lumbosacral Schwannomas.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Myxopapillary ependymomas (MPE) and intradural lumbosacral schwannomas may be challenging to distinguish based on presenting characteristics and preoperative imaging. Accurate differentiation is crucial, as MPEs carry a risk of cerebrospinal fluid dissemination and warrant earlier intervention, a more tailored surgical strategy, consideration for adjuvant radiation, and frequent surveillance. Here, we describe our institutional experience with these tumors and develop a radiomics-based machine learning model to help distinguish them on preoperative imaging. METHODS:
