INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis (NF) associated spine deformity is uncommon and can be debilitating to patients. Surgery for deformity correction is associated with improved neurological status and quality of life, however, the surgical correction of the spinal deformity can be challenging can be and associated with high complication rates. We present a series of NF patients with curves >100° or treated with a vertebral column resections (VCR).
HYPOTHESIS: Spine deformity correction surgery in NF patients with curves >100° or indicated for VCR have higher rates of postsurgical complications.

Order Lamniformes consists of 15 extant shark species that are ecologically diverse and utilize different swimming modes and speeds. Family Lamnidae includes the shortfin mako, porbeagle, and white shark which are fast, athletic sharks that swim using oscillations confined to the caudal body and fin. Other lamniforms, like the common thresher shark (Alopiidae), sand tiger (Carchariidae), and basking shark (Cetorhinidae), swim via oscillations that begin anteriorly, impacting a greater proportion of the axial body. Swimming oscillations subject the body to repeated bending cycles, including the

Background/Objectives: Ankylosing Spinal Disorders (ASDs) encompass a heterogeneous group of rheumatic diseases characterized by progressive ankylosis of the axial skeleton, including Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH), and Non-Radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis (nr-AxSpA). Spinal ankylosis profoundly alters the biomechanical properties of the vertebral column, transforming it into a rigid long-bone equivalent and dramatically increasing fracture risk even after low-energy trauma. Once a fracture occurs, the long lever arm created by the ankylosed se

Various aspects of movement, excavation, ecology, and muscle structure of Gymnophiona species have been reported. However, the unique mechanisms and dynamics of peristaltic locomotion and excavation are unclear, particularly for soil-inhabiting Gymnophiona spp. Previous studies primarily focused on forward locomotion and thrusting behavior, with less attention paid to the underlying vertebral and muscular mechanisms. Herein, using X-ray computed tomography, video analysis, and tissue specimens, we determined that the Mexican caecilian (Dermophis mexicanus) could generate peristaltic locomotion

Lumbar spine passive stiffness (LSPS) has been theorized to be a necessary source of stability for the vertebral column. However, the degree that LSPS plays in maintaining spinal stability has yet to be investigated. Trunk moment of inertia has been linked to LSPS, suggesting that an optimal LSPS value may exist. Determining trunk moment of inertia and LSPS allows the trunk to be modeled as an oscillatory system. Therefore, the current work aimed to determine if LSPS can be applied to infer spinal stability by comparing the predicted natural frequency of the trunk to the mean power frequency o

The anuran atlas represents one of the most structurally simplified cervical systems among tetrapods, consisting of a single vertebra that must simultaneously support the head, permit mobility, and withstand mechanical loads generated during locomotion and feeding. This unique configuration provides a compelling framework for investigating how structural constraint, allometry, and ecology interact to shape morphological evolution. Here, we examine atlas shape diversification across Hyloidea using geometric morphometrics and phylogenetic comparative methods on 421 specimens representing 133 spe

A 7-year-old male neutered Miniature Schnauzer was assessed due to an acute and progressive history of pelvic limb weakness and incoordination. At the examination, the dog was non-ambulatory paraparetic, the postural reaction were abscent in both pelvic limbs, with intact withdrawal and patellar reflexes and increased pelvic limb muscle tone, which lead into paraplegia with intact nociception in the follow 24 h. A T3-L3 myelopathy was suspected, and an MRI of the thoracolumbar vertebral column was performed under general anaesthesia. An ill-defined, solitary, T2W hyperintense and strongly cont

Segmentations of the vertebral column that include anatomical subregions can be used for patient education, pedicle screw planning, or radiomic feature extraction for spinal surgery. Deep learning has proven successful in tackling medical image segmentation; therefore, we aim to train a multiclass vertebral subregion segmentation model with different model architectures. The corpus, lamina, pedicle, superior and inferior articular process, transverse process, and spinous process of 118 thoracolumbar spine CTs were manually segmented. Then, a standard nnU-Net, a nnU-Net with residual encoder (R

Objective, noninvasive biomarkers of joint inflammation or pain are needed for dogs with osteoarthritis (OA). This prospective, observational study investigated whether body surface temperature quantified by infrared thermography was associated with joint pain and/or radiographic osteoarthritis (rOA) in dogs. Using thermal images, 14 regions of interest (ROI) were created for bilateral limb joints and the vertebral column for each dog and the mean temperature was calculated for each ROI. Orthopedic examination and radiographs classified each joint/region as affected or unaffected by rOA, pain,

Background: Congenital thoracic kyphoscoliosis caused by vertebral malformations is a challenging condition that may progress during skeletal growth, leading to spinal imbalance, pain, cosmetic deformity, and neurological compromise. Conventional correction often requires extensive anterior, posterior, or combined approaches associated with substantial surgical morbidity. We describe a single-position surgical technique combining a lateral retropleural asymmetric vertebral resection with percutaneous posterior instrumentation performed entirely in the lateral decubitus position. Methods: A 15-

BACKGROUND: Anterior approaches to the lumbar spine, particularly anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) at L4-L5 and L5-S1, are increasingly common. Vascular injury involving the aortic bifurcation (AB) is a serious, potentially fatal complication, so precise knowledge of the AB's relationship to adjacent vertebrae is essential for safe planning. This study determined the vertebral level of the AB and measured the perpendicular distance (X) between the AB and the anterior vertebral surface using multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCT-CTA), and evaluated variation by sex and age.

Snake vertebrae possess distinctive morphological features that differentiate them from those of other reptiles. While some of these structures are unique to particular snake groups, enabling direct taxonomic identifications, others are restricted to specific regions of the vertebral column. Among the latter are haemapophyses, paired structures emerging from the ventral surface of the centrum that characterize the caudal vertebrae of most, though not all, snakes. Practically confined to the caudal region, haemapophyses are absent from mid-trunk vertebrae, where other structures appear. Here, w

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The fibroblast-growth-factor 4 retrogene insertion on chromosome 12 (FGF4L2) is known to be associated with chondrodystrophy and intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which increases the risk of Hansen's type I intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE) in Dachshunds. While the FGF4L2 insertion is known to occur at high frequency within the breed, subgroup-specific data relating to coat-type and size categories remain limited. This pilot study aimed to determine the distribution of FGF4L2 and wild-type (N) alleles in a cohort of Dachshunds registered with the German Dachshund Cl

BACKGROUND: Surgical goals for congenital spinal deformity (CSD) include correction of deformity and prevention of progression without affecting neurological function. CSD has a higher incidence of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) alerts than other scoliosis types and a potential for risk of postoperative neurological deficit. This study investigates incidence, risk factors, and outcomes associated with IONM alerts in surgically treated CSD.
METHODS: A prospectively collected pediatric database was queried for surgically managed patients with CSD. Demographic, surgical, and IONM details

Data on the structure and postnatal ontogenesis of the vertebral column and spinal cord are of great importance for neurobiology. The present study is devoted to a morphometric analysis of the spinal cord and vertebral column of the cat during the period from birth to adulthood. A complex pattern of postnatal development of both structures was revealed. It was established that the growth rate of vertebral length depends on the rostrocaudal position of the vertebrae: it is similar in VC3-VT10 and increases in the caudal direction, reaching a maximum in VL5. The growth rate of segment length dem

OBJECTIVE: The authors of this study aimed to compare the surgical outcomes and complication profiles of posterior vertebral column resection (pVCR) performed at the apical vertebra (AV) versus the subapical vertebra (SAV) in patients with rigid tuberculotic angular kyphosis (TAK). They hypothesized that an SAV resection would reduce the incidence of neurological complications without compromising radiographic correction.
METHODS: They conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with TAK who underwent single-level pVCR (Schwab grade 5 osteotomy) between June 2010 and June 2023. Patients we
