[Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. Nosological concepts].

The term sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis groups affections of different pathogenicity. These result from an ossifying enthesiopathy, either inflammatory, isolated to the thoracic wall anteriorly or combined with a spondylarthropathy, particularly ankylosing spondylitis, or degenerative, the anterior thoracic hyperostosis usually being part of an ensheathing vertebral hyperostosis. A differential diagnosis is anterior thoracic hyperostosis due to an inflammatory osteopathy occurring in young patients and often associated with other bone lesions of pelvis and spine or long bones.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: a review and report of 11 cases.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a benign ossifying diathesis of unknown etiology characterized by hyperostosis and soft-tissue ossification between the clavicles, anterior portion of the upper ribs, and manubrium, with variable hyperostosis or ankylosis in the spine and sacroiliac joints. Our cumulative experience with 11 cases is reported, with emphasis on radiographic features of the condition. Scintigraphic results in five patients and computed tomographic findings in one patient are presented. A review of the literature and our own material indicates that sternocostoclavicular hypero

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. A report of nineteen cases, with special reference to etiology and treatment.

The cases of nineteen patients with sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis were reviewed retrospectively. Of particular interest were the responses to antibiotics and prostaglandin inhibitors. The prostaglandin inhibitors relieved the pain within three to four weeks in sixteen of eighteen patients so treated. However, the inhibitors gradually became less effective in most patients. Oral antibiotics were more effective than the inhibitors in relieving the pain of eight of the eleven patients who were given antibiotics. Pustulosis palmaris and plantaris, commonly associated with sternocostoclavicula

Plasma cell sclerosis of bone: a spectrum of disease.

We describe the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic manifestations of a group of disorders characterized by osteosclerosis in association with plasmacytic infiltration of bone marrow. These conditions include multiple myeloma, plasma cell granuloma, sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis, the POEMS syndrome (plasma cell dyscrasia with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, and skin changes), and chronic symmetric plasma cell osteomyelitis of childhood. Although clinically unrelated in many respects, features shared by these diseases support the existence of a specific factor l

Bone imaging of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis in palmoplantar pustulosis.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a rare syndrome that is characterized by hyperostosis and soft tissue ossification between the clavicles and the anterior part of the upper ribs. This syndrome frequently is found in the case of palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP), especially in Japan. There have been few published reports, however, of Tc-99m MDP bone imaging findings in PPP. Eleven patients with PPP who were suspected to have sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis were studied with Tc-99m MDP whole body bone imaging. Bone images were abnormal in 11 patients. Abnormal radionuclide concentrations wer

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. Radiological and pathological study of a specimen with ununited clavicular fracture.

Anatomico-radiological study of a sternocostoclavicular mass taken post-mortem from a man whose clinical history had shown bilateral sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) with plantar pustulosis for 27 years. The clavicle showed an ununited fracture attributable to a trauma sustained five years earlier. Both clavicular segments showed active remodelling with intraosseous granulation tissue and periosteal metaplastic ossification. The sternocostoclavicular region was fused in a bony block in which there were no signs of remodelling activity. The first rib and the distal extremity of the cla

All-terrain vehicle accidents: the experience of one hospital located near a major recreational area.

In two separate studies, charts of 169 all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident victims admitted to the emergency department of Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, California, were reviewed. Twenty-four percent of the cases were women, 30% were hospitalized, and 1% (two patients) died. The youngest patient was 3 and the oldest was 76. About 31% had been drinking, and the major type of bony injury (16%) was to the clavicle, ribs, or sternum. The accident rate was calculated as ten accidents per 1,000 ATV rider days, which is comparable to the ski accident rate of six per 1,000 skier days. The three-whee

Upper extremity neuropathies after cardiac surgery.

Although coronary artery bypass grafting is a common procedure, there can be significant postoperative morbidity. The occasional finding of unexplained postoperative neuropathy in these patients prompted this study. Fifty-three patients who had cardiac surgery that used the standard median sternotomy were studied prospectively. Detailed sensory and motor testing and intraoperative measurement of the distance of sternal retraction and duration of cardiopulmonary bypass were recorded. Twenty patients (37.7%) exhibited postoperative motor and sensory neuropathies, all of which involved the ulnar

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. A case report and review of the literature.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) or intersternocostoclavicular ossification is a recently recognized disorder of unknown origin. SCCH is characterized by painful, condensing hypertrophy of the sternum, both clavicles, and the upper ribs. Since its original description by Sonozaki in 1974, approximately 40 cases have been reported, mainly in the Japanese literature. This peculiar hyperostotic syndrome is often misdiagnosed. The differentiation from osteitis deformans can be difficult. Clinically, the disease produces a swelling in the upper chest area with persistent, pulling pain exac

[Thoracic hyperostoses. Description, nosology, etiology].

Thoracic hyperostosis is a bone disease with an inflammatory appearance which results in hypertrophy and condensation of the bony elements of the anterior thorax, the sternum, the clavicle and the ribs. 14 cases of the primary form of this disease, Köhler's primary sterno-costo-clavicular hyperostosis, have been reported in the literature. This benign disease is associated with only one complication: subclavian vein thrombosis. The secondary forms of thoracic hyperostosis are associated with extrathoracic signs and occur in a context suggestive of spondyloarthropathy. A sub-group is distinguis
