Numb chin syndrome associated with metastatic invasive ductal carcinoma of breast.

Numb chin syndrome (NCS), also known as mental nerve neuropathy, is characterized by facial and oral numbness restricted to the distribution of the mental nerve. Although not a common neuropathy, the clinical importance of this syndrome is its frequent association with malignancies. A 56-year-old Indian female reported with a complaint of numbness on the left side of chin. She had undergone a radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection for invasive ductal carcinoma of the right breast 4 years ago. Biopsy revealed tumor cells showing pleomorphic hyperchromatic nuclei arranged in cord

Solitary plasmacytoma of the mandible: A rare case report.

Plasmacytoma is a monoclonal, neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells that usually arises within bone marrow or soft tissue sites. It can involve either a single bone (solitary) or multiple bones. Solitary plasmacytoma has a predisposition for the red marrow-containing axial skeleton and is most frequently seen in the thoracic vertebrae, followed by the ribs, sternum, clavicle, or scapula. Its presence in the jaws is extremely rare. We present a case of a 54-year-old female with a well-defined radiolucency of the body region of the mandible later diagnosed as solitary plasmacytoma.

Thoracic Vertebral Body Irradiation Contributes to Acute Hematologic Toxicity During Chemoradiation Therapy for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

PURPOSE: To determine the relationships between radiation doses to the thoracic bone marrow and declines in blood cell counts in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with chemoradiation therapy (CRT). METHODS AND MATERIALS: We included 52 patients with NSCLC treated with definitive concurrent carboplatin-paclitaxel and RT. Dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters for the thoracic vertebrae (TV), sternum, scapulae, clavicles, and ribs were assessed for associations with changes in blood counts during the course of CRT. Linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to iden

Treponemal infection in Peru's Early Colonial period: A case of complex lesion patterning and unusual funerary treatment.

This study describes a series of skeletal lesions observed in a mid 16th century individual of an old adult female from the Early Colonial Period of northern coastal Peru. This fragmented skeleton revealed evidence of complex, active, and systemic chronic infection that included multiple pathological foci on the cranial vault, extensive pathological new bone formation in both arms, the sternum, ribs, left scapula, clavicles, femora, and fibulae, which was paralleled by extensive endosteal obliteration of affected long bone medullary cavities. Differential diagnosis included hematogenous osteom

Surgical therapy of primary malignant bone tumours and soft tissue sarcomas of the chest wall: a two-institutional experience.

PURPOSE: Primary malignant bone tumours and soft tissue sarcomas of the chest wall are exceedingly rare entities. The aim of this study was a retrospective two-institutional analysis of surgical therapy with respect to the kind and amount of the resection performed, the type of reconstruction and the oncological outcome. METHODS: Between September 1999 and August 2010 31 patients (seven women and 24 men) were treated due to a primary malignant bone tumour or soft tissue sarcoma of the chest wall in two centres. Eight low-grade sarcomas were noted as well as 23 highly malignant sarcomas. The t

On the antiquity of cancer: evidence for metastatic carcinoma in a young man from ancient Nubia (c. 1200 BC).

Cancer, one of the world's leading causes of death today, remains almost absent relative to other pathological conditions, in the archaeological record, giving rise to the conclusion that the disease is mainly a product of modern living and increased longevity. This paper presents a male, young-adult individual from the archaeological site of Amara West in northern Sudan (c. 1200 BC) displaying multiple, mainly osteolytic, lesions on the vertebrae, ribs, sternum, clavicles, scapulae, pelvis, and humeral and femoral heads. Following radiographic, microscopic and scanning electron microscopic (S

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis: typical patterns of bone involvement in whole-body bone scintigraphy.

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is an autoinflammatory bone disease of unknown etiology. It affects children and adolescents predominantly and occurs mostly in the female population. It is characterized by the insidious onset of pain and swelling, with a fluctuating clinical course of relapses and remissions. Typically, several bones are affected, either synchronously or metachronously, and bilateral involvement is common. CRMO most commonly affects the metaphysis of long bones, especially the tibia, femur, and clavicle. The spine, pelvis, ribs, sternum, and mandible may also

Risk of Osteoporotic Fractures With Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers Versus Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors in Hypertensive Community-Dwelling Elderly.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are used to treat hypertension; however, in vivo and clinical studies suggest that ARBs and ACE inhibitors may exert different effects on bone. The association between long-term use of ARBs and ACE inhibitors and fracture requiring medical attention is limited. We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study with propensity score matching using administrative databases in Ontario, Canada, to examine the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures in hypertensive elderly treated with ARBs versus AC

An epidemiological study on pattern of thoraco-abdominal injuries sustained in fatal road traffic accidents of Bangalore: Autopsy-based study.

BACKGROUND: The statistical profile reflects a global estimate of 5.1 million deaths in 2000, which was due to injuries that accounted for 10% of deaths due to all causes. Out of this, a quarter of injury-related deaths occurred in the South-East Asian region. Road Traffic Accident (RTA) is one among the top 5 causes of morbidity and mortality in South-East Asian countries. Most common cause of blunt abdominal trauma in India is road traffic accident followed by pedestrian accidents, abdominal blows, and fall from heights. AIMS: To analyze the epidemiology and pattern of fatal thoraco-abdomin

Sclerotic multiple myeloma with an unusual sunburst periosteal reaction occurring in the sternum.

Multiple myeloma is a disseminated neoplastic monoclonal gammopathy that usually affects the skull, clavicle, rib, pelvis, spinal column, and proximal portions of the humerus and femur. The initial manifestation of multiple myeloma in the sternum is rare. The classic radiological presentations of multiple myeloma are multiple "punched-out" areas of bone destruction, expansile lytic lesions, and generalized osteoporosis. Primary sclerotic presentation is rare and occurs in only 3 % of cases. A sclerotic multiple myeloma with a sunburst periosteal reaction occurring in the sternum has not been r

Paleopathological description and diagnosis of metastatic carcinoma in an Early Bronze Age (4588+34 Cal. BP) forager from the Cis-Baikal region of Eastern Siberia.

Extensive osteolytic and osteoblastic lesions were observed on the skeletal remains of an adult male excavated from an Early Bronze Age cemetery dated to 4556+32 years BP, located in the Cis-Baikal region of Siberia (Russian Federation). Lytic lesions ranged in size from several mm to over 60 mm in diameter and had irregular, moth-eaten borders. Many of these lesions destroyed trabecular bone, though a hollowed shell of cortical bone often remained observable. Radiographic analysis revealed numerous lytic lesions within trabecular bone that had not yet affected the cortex. Blastic lesions were

Tuberculous osteomyelitis/arthritis of the first costo-clavicular joint and sternum.

A young Somali immigrant presents with a two-year history of a large, firm, painful right anterolateral chest wall sternal mass. The patient denied any history of trauma or infection at the site and did not have a fever, erythematous lesion at the site, clubbing, or lymphadenopathy. A lateral chest radiograph demonstrated a low density mass isolated to the subcutaneous soft tissue overlying the sternum, ribs and clavicle. Computed tomography (CT) with contrast demonstrated a cystic lesion in the right anterolateral chest wall deep to the pectoralis muscle. Enhanced CT of the chest demonstrated

From Sternocostoclavicular Hyperostosis (SCCH) to SAPHO syndrome.

In the early seventies isolated Sternocostoclavicular Hyperostosis (SCCH) was described as a persistent painful swelling of the sternum, clavicles and upper ribs. A few years later associations with skin lesions were reported and SCCH was suggested as a part of psoriatic spondylarthritis. Then, different terms such as pustulotic arthro-osteitis and others were used. In 1987 a French national survey proposed the term SAPHO syndrome, standing for synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and osteitis. This term has proven to be useful till now to describe these osteoarticular disorders with asso

Optimal markers' placement on the thorax for clinical gait analysis.

Although, several thorax models have been proposed for clinical gait analysis, none has received widespread acceptance nor been subject to any extensive validation work, especially for the marker set to use. The aim of this study was thus to determine the optimal and minimal makers' placement on the thorax for clinical gait analysis. Ten healthy subjects have performed a series of movements (arm, head, trunk) with large amplitude during walking. Reflective markers were taped on the thorax (C7, T2, T4, T6, T8, T10, T12, sternum, clavicles and ribs) and their 3D positions were captured with an o

Radionuclide-guided biopsy of bone lesions in cancer patients; a reliable, well-tolerated technique.

OBJECTIVES: In follow up or primary analysis of malignant disease, use of nuclear medicine imaging techniques is increasing. The lesions, detected by these modalities, do not always present with a matching radiological abnormality suitable for radiological biopsy. A method to confirm, or rule out, metastatic disease in these cases is radionuclide-guided surgical biopsy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The technique consists of injecting a Technetium-99m labelled diphosphonate, performing a bone scan and marking the lesion; under general anaesthetic a surgical biopsy is taken through a small incision gu

[Successful multidisciplinary treatment of a case of lymph node recurrence with invasion to adjacent organs after curative resection of esophageal cancer].

In the present report, we describe a case of a woman who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal carcinosarcoma in October 2008. Computed tomography (CT) and endoscopy indicated lymph node recurrence with invasion into adjacent organs and oropharyngeal carcinoma in September 2009. She subsequently received 2 courses of chemotherapy (5-fluorouracil+ cisplatin+adriamycin) plus radiotherapy with a total dose of 60 Gy. Although a partial response was achieved after this treatment, CT still indicated the presence of residual lesions. Therefore, surgical excision was performed at the site of the lymp

Morphogenesis of the manubrium of sternum in human embryos: a new concept.

To revisit many theories on fetal development of the manubrium of the sternum, we examined 25 mid-term fetuses at 6-9 weeks of gestation. The initial developmental stage of the manubrium was characterized by a distinct interclavicular mesenchyme that was continuous with the developing clavicles. Because parts of the clavicle in which endochondral ossification occurs originate from the neural crest, the interclavicular mesenchyme seems to be of the same origin. The sternal bands, possibly of the lateral plate origin, were restricted at the anterior ends of the ribs in the paired thoracic walls.
