Anterior Mediastinal Myelolipoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND Myelolipoma is a benign tumor, commonly found in the supra-renal gland, which is composed of mature fatty tissue admixed with hematopoietic elements. However, there are several extra-adrenal sites reported in the literature and thoracic myelolipoma is an unusual location for extra-adrenal myelolipoma. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 71-year-old man previously diagnosed with hypertension who was admitted due to a motor vehicle injury with a lumbar spine fracture. The patient developed non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction during admission. A coronary angiogram revealed

Osteolipoma of head and neck - a review.

OBJECTIVE: Due to the rarity of osteolipoma, current knowledge and understanding of its' clinical presentation, management, radiological features, histological characteristics, and prognosis are lacking and can present a clinical conundrum to clinicians and histopathologist alike, given wide range of differential diagnoses. This paper aims to compile, analyse and present details to augment the available literature on osteolipoma in the head and neck. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search on PUBMED/MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and Science Citation Index, Google scholar and Cochrane database fo

Herniated superficial lipomas in gluteal and thigh support areas: a special clinical ultrasound presentation.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are the most frequent benign tumor. They have been described as soft, well-defined, slow-growing palpable masses, and classified as deep or superficial. PURPOSE: To present the clinical and ultrasound findings of herniated superficial subcutaneous lipoma (HSL), located in pressure/support areas, not previously described. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A seven-year retrospective review was performed. Patients with a preoperative high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) diagnosis of HSL archived in the computational system and histological study information were selected. RESULTS: A total

[Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (Darier-Ferrand) of the abdomen: a case report].

Dermatofibrosarcoma is a rare skin tumor. Morphological characteristics can be misleading and unknown to most of physicians. Diagnostic delay may affect patient´s management and prognosis. We here report the case of a young patient with lesions protruding from the abdominal wall mistaken for benign cysts. X-ray examination revealed subcutaneous adipose tissue mass. This was suspected of being a fibrosarcoma. The mass was resected with a macroscopic safety margin. The anatomo-pathological study confirmed the diagnosis of dermatofibrosarcoma. Clinical and radiological follow-up examinations didn

Axillary Hibernoma in woman with Lobular breast cancer and MEN1 syndrome: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The present study reports the case of an axillary hibernoma in a patient with lobular homolateral breast cancer and multiple endocrine neoplasia type1 (MEN-1). Hibernoma is a rare benign adipose tissue tumor, and usually manifests as a slowly growing and painless rubbery mass. These tumors can arise in various sites, but mammary hibernomas remain extraordinarily uncommon. Although hibernomas are metabolically active and therefore "glucose-avid" on fluorodeoxyglucose CT-positron emission tomography (FDG CT-PET), imaging alone is inadequate in providing a reliable diagnosis and def

Borderline ovarian tumors: French guidelines from the CNGOF. Part 1. Epidemiology, biopathology, imaging and biomarkers.

The incidence (rate per 100 000) of borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) increases progressively with age, starting at 15-19 years and peaking at around 4.5 cases per 100 000 at an age of 55-59 years (LE3) with a median age of 46 years. The five year survival for FIGO stages I, II, III and IV is 99.7 % (95 % CI: 96.2-100 %), 99.6 % (95 % CI: 92.6-100 %), 95.3 % (95 % CI: 91.8-97.4 %) and 77.1 % (95 % CI: 58.0-88.3 %), respectively (LE3). An epidemiological association exists between the individual risk of BOT and family history of BOT and certain other cancers (pancreatic, lung, bone, leukemia) (L

Spindle Cell Lipomas of the Respiratory Tract: A Case Report and Comprehensive Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Spindle cell lipomas (SCLs) are benign tumors that are characteristically present on the upper back and neck, but in rare cases present throughout the respiratory mucosa, causing hoarseness, stridor, dyspnea, and obstruction. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the importance of considering SCL in the diagnosis of benign respiratory tract tumors, a literature review identified all published cases of respiratory tract SCLs, including 2 from our institution: one case in the nasopharynx and 1 in the nasal valve. METHODS: All case reports, series and literature reviews from the English literatur

Diagnostic performance of MRI and histology in assessment of deep lipomatous tumours.

BACKGROUND: Deep lipomatous tumours can be benign lipomas or intermediate/locally recurring atypical lipomatous tumours (ALTs). Differentiating between these two entities clinically and radiologically is difficult. The aims of this study were to report a series of deep lipomatous tumours, comparing the clinical, radiological and pathological features of ALTs and lipomas; and to predict the likelihood of a lipomatous tumour being ALT based on anatomical site and MRI characteristics. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients with deep lipomatous tumours presenting over 6 years to a t

[A Case of Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma of the Spermatic Cord].

A74-year-old man was referred to the department of general surgery in our hospital because of a painless right scrotal swelling persisting for three months. On physical examination, the patient was found to have an inguinal hernia. The patient underwent laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair, but no inguinal hernia was detected. The patient was referred to our department for a suspected tumor of the spermatic cord. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a clearbordered and homogeneous mass without fat in the right spermatic cord. The findings from the im

Spindle cell lipoma mimicking pleomorphic adenoma: A diagnostic challenge on cytology.

Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is a benign neoplasm of mature adipose tissue mostly located in the neck, back, and shoulder region. It is composed of a variable admixture of adipocytes, benign spindle cells, and collagen fibres. While the histopathologic features of SCL are quite characteristic and well described, a cytologic diagnosis of SCL might be challenging. We present a case of a 36-year-old female with a swelling in the left preauricular region since last 6 mo. On fine needle aspiration, a diagnosis of lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma (PA) was rendered because of the presence of benign spindl

Rapidly growing subcutaneous mass in an infant.

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a benign mesenchymal tumor of young children. It has a broad clinical differential diagnosis and is often clinically confused for vascular and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Recognition of the unique histologic features of FHI, a triphasic population of mature adipose tissue, mature fibrous tissue, and immature mesenchymal tissue, will ensure the correct diagnosis. In this report we present a case of this rare entity, including the associated clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings.

Diagnosis and management of spermatic cord tumors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spermatic cord tumors (SCT) are very rare. The present review discusses the most recent literature regarding clinical presentation, pathological characteristics, diagnosis, and management of SCT. RECENT FINDINGS: Although the majority of SCT are benign, when malignant almost all SCT are sarcomas. Liposarcomas are the most common; whereas rhabdomyosarcomas recorded the highest tendency of develop distant metastases. The clinical presentation is usually a unilateral solid slow-growing mass at the level of the inguinal canal and of the scrotum. Surgical excision represents the

Intra-abdominal bleeding with hemorrhagic shock: a case of adrenal myelolipoma and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Adrenal myelolipoma is an uncommon, benign, and hormonally non-functioning tumor that is composed of mature adipose tissue and normal hematopoietic tissue. Most cases to date are asymptomatic or have epigastric pain. Acute hemorrhage is the most dramatic manifestation of adrenal myelolipoma; though, it is a rare entity. Hemorrhagic shock due to adrenal myelolipoma, to our knowledge, was much less mentioned so far. Persistent bleeding and uncontrollable hypotension are considered to be absolute indications for immediate surgical operation. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we presented a 3

Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Mimicking a Primary Colon Mass.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is typically a nonlipogenic high-grade sarcoma that arises from well-differentiated liposarcoma. It most commonly presents as a large mass in the retroperitoneum. Significant involvement of the gastrointestinal tract by dedifferentiated liposarcoma is uncommon. We present a unique case of dedifferentiated liposarcoma radiographically mimicking a primary colon mass with resulting intussusception; stranding of the adjacent adipose tissue was presumed to be a secondary reactive change. On histopathologic analysis of the hemicolectomy specimen, a high-grade sarcoma was

Correlation of breast tissue histology and optical signatures to improve margin assessment techniques.

Optical spectroscopy is sensitive to morphological composition and has potential applications in intraoperative margin assessment. Here, we evaluate ex vivo breast tissue and corresponding quantified hematoxylin & eosin images to correlate optical scattering signatures to tissue composition stratified by patient characteristics. Adipose sites (213) were characterized by their cell area and density. All other benign and malignant sites (181) were quantified using a grid method to determine composition. The relationships between mean reduced scattering coefficient (〈μs′〉), and % adipose, % colla

A Giant Intra Abdominal Mass Mimicking Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Rare Presentation of Renal Angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign tumor commonly found in kidney than extra renal sites. Most of the small renal angiomyolipomas are diagnosed incidentally on ultrasound and other imaging studies. Some renal AMLs present clinically when become very big, giant renal angiomyolipoma. Although almost all cases are benign, a relatively rare variant of epitheloid angiomyolipoma has got malignant potential and can even metastasize. Ultrasonography, CT and MRI scan are usually used for diagnosis of angiomyolipoma with high level of accuracy; even though some lesions may be confused as renal cell carcin

Spindle Cell Lipomas Arising at Atypical Locations.

OBJECTIVES: Spindle cell lipomas (SCLs) are benign lipomatous neoplasms that classically arise in the posterior neck, upper back, and shoulders of older male patients. We sought to characterize the occurrence of this entity at nonclassic sites. METHODS: All cases of SCL arising at atypical sites were retrieved from our archives. RESULTS: Of 439 total cases of SCL, 57 arose at atypical locations in 32 men and 25 women (age range, 27-79 years). The tumor sites included leg (n = 23), buttock/perineum/inguinal (n = 10), forearm (n = 9), finger (n = 9), foot (n = 2), toe (n = 2), hand (n = 1), an

Endobronchial solitary fibrous tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that appears primarily in the pleura and rarely in intrapulmonary or endobronchial topography. The authors report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented obstructive respiratory symptoms for 4 years. The chest computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed an obstructive polypoid lesion located between the trachea and the left main bronchus associated with distal atelectasis of the left lung. A resection of the lesion was performed and, macroscopically, the mass was oval, encapsulated, and firm, measuring 2.3 × 1.7 × 1.5 cm. Histology r

Giant lipoma in the thigh A case report.

UNLABELLED: Lipomas are the most common benign mesenchymal tumours; they are composed by mature lipocytes and are usually located in the subcutaneous tissue. They may occur at any place in which there is adipose tissue, most of them are found in the upper part of the body, especially in the trunk and neck, although they may also develop in other sites, including the hand. Most lipomas are small, weigh only a few grams, and usually the maximum diameter is smaller than 2 cm. Whereas, to be referred to as ''giant'', the lipoma must be at least 10 cm in diameter or weigh a minimum of 1,000 g. Beca
