BACKGROUND: Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign, encapsulated tumor arising from embryonic white fat. On histology they typically contain variably differentiated adipocytes, primitive mesenchymal cells, myxoid matrix, and fibrous trabeculae. The tumor occurs primarily in infancy and early childhood. It often occurs in the extremities and trunk, and rarely develops in the head and neck and other sites.
METHODS: Ten cases of histopathologically proven lipoblastoma presenting to our hospital during a 6-year period (2003-2008) were reviewed retrospectively for their clinical presentations, treatment,

BACKGROUND: Benign subcutaneous lesions of the trunk are typically excised through overlying skin incisions, which can result in permanent, potentially disfiguring scars. We previously reported our experience with transaxillary subcutaneous endoscopic approach for removal of benign lesions of the neck. Here we report a similar approach for removing benign lesions of the trunk and lower extremity.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 4 consecutive subcutaneous endoscopic procedures for benign truncal and lower extremity lesions from November 2006 to October 2008. The lesions includ

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: To describe a patient with dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord and to perform a bibliographic review.
METHODS: We describe the case of a patient with dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord, and conducted an extensive search of literature in different databases that support the discussion of the case.
RESULTS: A 65 years old male presented a right scrotal mass with progressive growth, and underwent excision of the mass (measured 34 x 22 x 17 cm and weighed 5786 grams). Pathology reported dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord. This pa

Retroperitoneal lesions represent a broad, diverse collection of entities; when they contain fat, the differential diagnosis, which ranges from benign to fully malignant lesions, substantially narrows. Lipomas rarely occur in the retroperitoneum; thus, fat-containing lesions in this location should never be dismissed as lipoma. Pelvic lipomatosis is the overgrowth of histologically normal fat in the extraabdominal compartments of the pelvis along the perirectal and perivesicular spaces. Infants and young children develop lipoblastomas rather than liposarcomas, which occur in older patients. Li

We report herein the case of a giant lipoma of the greater omentum that was treated by laparoscopic surgery. A 71-year-old male patient was admitted with a diagnosis of sigmoid colon cancer. During preoperative examination, a gallbladder stone and an intra-abdominal giant lipoma were accidentally diagnosed. Laparoscopic examination revealed a smooth-surfaced, giant yellow tumor at the lower border of the greater omentum that was unattached to the surrounding organs. After laparoscopic resection of the tumor and cholecystectomy, a 10-cm midline incision was made in the lower abdomen to remove t

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare benign neoplasm that usually arises in the kidneys, but may rarely originate in sites such as the retroperitoneum, liver and bone. It is characterised by an intimate admixture of blood vessels, smooth muscle and fat. This multiphasic composition allows for its recognition on ultrasound and CT scan examination. Metastases are exceedingly uncommon, and only one other case of metastatic extrarenal AML exists in the literature. Histological variants of AML such as epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) are considered to be locally aggressive. A unique case of an EAML of t

Myelolipoma is a benign tumor that occurs in the adrenal gland and rarely in extra-adrenal sites. Commonly, it is diagnosed as an incidental finding. However, some reports indicate synchronous occurrence with other lesions including adrenocortical carcinoma. It has very rarely been reported to occur in association with adrenocortical adenoma. In this paper, we report three cases of adrenal myelolipoma associated with adrenocortical adenoma; in all three patients, the radiological appearance resembled adrenocortical carcinoma. These cases emphasize the importance of this combination as a pitfal

Angiomyolipoma is a benign tumor composed of varying proportions of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels, and adipose tissue that most commonly occurs in the kidney. Sporadic lesions and lesions arising in the setting of the tuberous sclerosis complex have been reported in extrarenal sites. We present the case of an incidentally discovered angiomyolipoma in the anterior mediastinum. Thymoma was suspected clinically, and the lesion was composed mainly of spindled-to-epithelioid cells arranged in a histologic pattern reminiscent of hemangiopericytoma, a pattern that has been described in thymoma.

BACKGROUND: Dermolipoma is an uncommon benign tumor, congenitally occurring on the conjunctiva, and may be present at other sites. The appearance of dermolipoma closely resembles orbital fat prolapse and limbal dermoid, and therefore it is necessary to take this into account in diagnosis. Postoperative complications such as blepharoptosis, diplopia, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca can develop.
CASE REPORT: The first case was a 52-year-old female patient referred for the treatment of an orbital fat prolapse in her right eye. Another case, an 8-year-old female patient, was referred for the treatm

Adrenal myelolipoma is a rare benign tumor composed of mature lipomatous and hemopoietic tissue. Although it is often discovered as an incidental finding on imaging of the abdomen for some other reason or at autopsy, adrenal myelolipoma has been reported to present with symptoms such as flank pain resulting from tumor bulk, necrosis, or spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage. Myelolipomas are hormonally inactive but have also been reported to coexist with other hormonally active tumors of the adrenal gland. They are usually unilateral but may be bilateral and may also develop in extraadrenal s

Myelolipomas are benign tumours composed of haematopoietic tissue and mature adipocytes. They occur predominantly in the adrenal glands although rarely extra adrenal sites have been described. Their presentation and location can cause them to be easily confused with a malignant tumour. Here we present a myelolipoma in the paravesical space. To the best of our knowledge this location has not been reported before. The growing use of imaging will lead to an increase in incidence of these tumours. Understanding the natural history and their differentiation from other tumours is therefore important

We describe a girl with cutaneous angiolipoleiomyoma on the buttock. The 16-year-old girl had a 2.5- x 1.5-cm subcutaneous tumor on the right buttock, which was slightly tender. The tumor appeared to be vascular and was, therefore, surgically excised. Histologically, the lesion was poorly circumscribed and was composed of differently sized blood vessels, smooth-muscle bundles, and mature adipose tissue. These histologic findings were consistent with those of angiomyolipoma, which commonly occurs in the kidney. Cutaneous angiomyolipoma, which is also known as cutaneous angiolipoleiomyoma, is a

Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare, benign condition characterized histologically by increased numbers of eccrine elements, as well as numerous capillary channels. In most cases, EAH arises as a single lesion; however, multiple variants have been reported. We report a 35-year-old female patient with multiple, sudoriparous, subcutaneous nodules on the right foot, which showed typical histopathological findings of EAH, and vascular components of the tumor consisted of thin-walled dilated vascular spaces intermixed with spindle cells and some histiocytoid endothelial cells representing

Histopathological examination was performed on cutaneous biopsies from 900 dogs with skin lesions from Zimbabwe, collected from 1996 to 2000. Clinical data were collected from medical records. Sixty per cent (540/900) of the cases were tumours and 40% (360/900) were non-neoplastic inflammatory or degenerative diseases. Thirty different histological types of tumour were diagnosed. The prevalence of epithelial, mesenchymal, lymphohistiocytic and melanocytic tumours was 39.4%, 44.4%, 7.4% and 8.7%, respectively. The 10 most common tumours, comprising 73.7% of all cutaneous neoplasms, were mast ce

Angiomyolipoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that typically occurs in the kidney sporadically or in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. Extrarenal angiomyolipomas are uncommon, and the liver is the most common extrarenal site. Other sites reported include the bone, colon, heart, lung, parotid gland, skin, spermatic cord, gynecologic regions, and retroperitoneum. A case of an angiomyolipoma involving the right adrenal gland in a 49-year-old female patient with tuberous sclerosis is reported. The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features are also discussed. In this paper, the authors offer a classification of benign fatty tumours of the upper limb. There are three histologically distinct types of fat cells: immature fat cells which give rise to lipoblastomas, mature brown fat cells which give rise to hibernomas and mature white fat cells which give rise to lipomas. Lipomas are the most common and they are sub-classified according to the anatomic site of fat cells into dermal, subcutaneous and sub-fascial lipomas; or tumours directly related to muscle, bone, synovium or nerve. Finally, the authors review 67 patients with benign fatty tumours of th

The authors report a case of well differentiated paratesticular liposarcoma in a 41-year-old patient. This is a rare tumour (about one hundred cases have been reported in the literature), which essentially arises from the spermatic cord. Clinical and radiological signs are nonspecific and the diagnosis is generally based on histological examination of the operative specimen. Due to the histological similarities, all specimens of benign lipoma must be examined for the presence of well differentiated liposarcoma. Treatment consists of transinguinal radical orchidectomy, sometimes with resection

OBJECTIVE: To define the clinical features and prognosis of patients with abdominal metastasis from primary soft tissue sarcoma (STS) at other sites.
METHODS: All patients with abdominal metastasis from STS were identified from the Royal Marsden Hospital Sarcoma Unit prospective database from January 1990 to July 2001.
RESULTS: Nineteen patients developed abdominal metastasis out of a cohort of 2127 patients (0.9%) evaluated during the study interval. The median age was 49 (19-71) years. The median time to abdominal metastasis from diagnosis of the primary was 27 (8-91) months. The presentin

UNLABELLED: Angiomyolipoma (AGML) is a rare benign tumour usually located in the kidneys, but it can occur also in other sites -- e.g. in the skeletal muscles. This location requires differentiation from sarcomas and angiomas. The aim of the study is to assess the diagnostic and therapeutic methods applied in the management of patients with AGML.
PATIENTS: five patients were treated for intramuscular AGML (1998-2001). Tumour localisation was as follows: intermediate head of vastus muscle of the femur, lateral head, medial head, occipital muscles of the head, and the interosteal muscles of the
